5ERIC EJ1099193: Using An Online Games-Based Learning Approach To Teach Database Design Concepts

By

The study of database systems is typically core in undergraduate and postgraduate programmes related to computer science and information systems. However, one component of this curriculum that many learners have difficulty with is database analysis and design, an area that is critical to the development of modern information systems. This paper proposes a set of principles for the design of a games-based learning environment to help the learner develop the skills necessary to understand and perform database analysis and design effectively. The paper also presents some preliminary results on the use of this environment.

7Avibase - A Database System For Managing And Organizing Taxonomic Concepts.

By

This article is from ZooKeys . Abstract AbstractScientific names of biological entities offer an imperfect resolution of the concepts that they are intended to represent. Often they are labels applied to entities ranging from entire populations to individual specimens representing those populations, even though such names only unambiguously identify the type specimen to which they were originally attached. Thus the real-life referents of names are constantly changing as biological circumscriptions are redefined and thereby alter the sets of individuals bearing those names. This problem is compounded by other characteristics of names that make them ambiguous identifiers of biological concepts, including emendations, homonymy and synonymy. Taxonomic concepts have been proposed as a way to address issues related to scientific names, but they have yet to receive broad recognition or implementation. Some efforts have been made towards building systems that address these issues by cataloguing and organizing taxonomic concepts, but most are still in conceptual or proof-of-concept stage. We present the on-line database Avibase as one possible approach to organizing taxonomic concepts. Avibase has been successfully used to describe and organize 844,000 species-level and 705,000 subspecies-level taxonomic concepts across every major bird taxonomic checklist of the last 125 years. The use of taxonomic concepts in place of scientific names, coupled with efficient resolution services, is a major step toward addressing some of the main deficiencies in the current practices of scientific name dissemination and use.

18DTIC ADA299091: Conversion Of The TRACON Operations Concepts Database Into A Formal Sentence Outline Job Task Taxonomy.

By

FAA Air Traffic Control Operations Concepts Volume VIII: TRACON Controllers (1989) developed by CTA, Inc., a technical description of the duties of a TRACON air traffic control specialist (ATCS), formatted in User Interface Language, was restructured into a hierarchical formal sentence outline. To ensure that none of the meaning associated with a task or task element was lost during the conversion, the revised document was reviewed by subject matter experts (SMEs) consisting of four groups of six TRACON controllers and four quality assurance managers. SMEs looked for words, phrases, or acronyms not commonly used by TRACON controllers, and illogical sequencing of duties described in the document. Appropriate suggestions for change were implemented into the document before the next review. Six- hundred seventy-one changes were made to the document, with only seven of these changes made during the final review, confirming that an improved document resulted from the research. The restructured document is intended to assist in the identification of situation awareness information requirements. However, an easily understood, detailed description of duties performed by a TRACON ATCS has potential not only for use by researchers interested in TRACON ATCS tasks, but also by quality assurance investigation teams and training personnel.

19Advanced Concepts In Operating Systems : Distributed, Database, And Multiprocessor Operating Systems

32DTIC ADA507513: Utilizing Arc Marine Concepts For Designing A Geospatially Enabled Database To Support Rapid Environmental Assessment

By

The design of the rapid environmental assessment (REA) database version 1 was completed under contract. The database was constructed in PostgreSQL, an open-source database management system. The REA database was primarily used for the storage of DRDC Atlantic environmental data. However, additional data sets from external sources were added for bathymetry and geological data. As use of the REA database increased, it became desirable to redesign the database to better serve the user community within DRDC Atlantic. The redesign effort focused on the use of widely used standards and specifications for oceanographic data and metadata management. The redesign created a complete data model in the ERwin data modelling software for a production level database. The data model is fully documented in terms of data type, comment fields and relationships between entities. The redesign effort also fully documented the mapping of data from the existing REA database to the redesigned production data model, thereby providing developers with a clear and concise progression plan. The redesign effort also identified considerable data in the existing REA database that is not required in the production database. Finally, a designed data classification scheme is used to develop a user exit strategy for accessing the external data sets. This negates the need to store external data sets within the redesigned database.

40NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS) 19930019136: Advanced Transportation System Studies. Alternate Propulsion Subsystem Concepts: Propulsion Database

By

The Advanced Transportation System Studies alternate propulsion subsystem concepts propulsion database interim report is presented. The objective of the database development task is to produce a propulsion database which is easy to use and modify while also being comprehensive in the level of detail available. The database is to be available on the Macintosh computer system. The task is to extend across all three years of the contract. Consequently, a significant fraction of the effort in this first year of the task was devoted to the development of the database structure to ensure a robust base for the following years' efforts. Nonetheless, significant point design propulsion system descriptions and parametric models were also produced. Each of the two propulsion databases, parametric propulsion database and propulsion system database, are described. The descriptions include a user's guide to each code, write-ups for models used, and sample output. The parametric database has models for LOX/H2 and LOX/RP liquid engines, solid rocket boosters using three different propellants, a hybrid rocket booster, and a NERVA derived nuclear thermal rocket engine.

Summary of Resilient Information Management & Distribution Features 1. Information Synchronization Can Automatically Adjust to Bandwidth Variations by: A. Including Communications in the Data Model; and B. Passively Collecting Network Performance Statistics. 2. The Active Database Triggers Can Now Refer to the Statistics to Dynamically Vary Database Synchronization (e.g., Position Report Resolution Vary With Network Delay). 3. Audit Trail Requirements Are Relaxed Between Databases to Ensure that the Most Important Information Gets Distributed (First) -i.e., Promiscuous Data Replication. 4. Because a Battlefield Model Exists at Each Node, Sophisticated Application Programs Can Be Used to Fill Holes Via Prediction.

46DTIC ADA295027: Convention Of The TRACON Operations Concepts Database Into A Formal Sentence Outline Job Task Taxonomy.

48The Relationship Between Age Of Acquisition And Syntactic Class: An Exploration Of Property Concepts In The Wordbank Database

By

It has often been observed in the acquisition literature that nouns are acquired before adjectives or verbs, a phenomenon commonly referred to as "the noun bias". Broadly speaking, there are two competing explanations for the noun bias, one syntactic and the other semantic. The syntactic theory (see e.g. Snedeker & Gleitman, 2004) has it that nouns are acquired early because they are the foundation of argument structure. Verbs need nominal arguments and adjectives need nouns to modify, therefore it is not possible, these theories argue, to use verbs or adjectives without first having nouns. Semantic theories of the noun bias, such as the "Natural Partitions" theory due to Gentner (1982; but ultimately dating to Aristotle), by contrast, argues that nouns are acquired first because they, or at least those nouns that are learned early, refer to things in the world that are easily perceived by learners. Because they are easy for learners to perceive, they are easy to acquire, and are therefore acquired early. In the current study, we provide a novel analysis that explores the relative value of syntactic and semantic factors in explaining age of acquisition for what are called "property concepts" in the linguistic typology literature. The categorial class of property concepts across languages is unstable, with some languages describing them with words of category adjective, and others with nouns, and yet others with verbs. We aim to exploit this crosslinguistic variation in the category of property concept words in order to test the syntactic and semantic explanations of the age of acquisition of words. The key fact of property concept words is that while their meanings are held constant across languages, their category varies. We look at whether there is a relationship between category and age of acquisition using Wordbank (Frank et al, 2021), a database of parental questionnaires concerning children's vocabulary development across a diverse set of languages. If syntax is the driving factor in the explanation of the noun bias, we should find that a word for any given meaning will be learned earlier by children acquiring a language which that meaning is a noun that by children learning a language in which that same meaning is an adjective or a verb. By contrast, semantic theories predict that given that the meaning, and real world referent is the same across languages, crosslinguistic differences in category should make no difference to the age of acquisition of a word with the same meaning across languages. Please see uploaded PDF for further details.
