1DTIC ADA196853: Design Of Defense Data Network For The Republic Of Korea Military

By

This thesis provides the concepts for the construction of an integrated computer communications network, as would be appropriate for the Republic of Korea (ROK) Defense Data Network (DDN). The current ROK military communications system and its problems are discussed, along with the requirements of the ROK Armed Forces. The basic concepts of data communications and the United States DDN are also analyzed. Through synthesis of these concepts, the goals of the required system and a proposed ROKM DDN model are provided. Keywords: Systems engineering, Systems analysis.

2DTIC ADA474190: Service-Oriented Architectures, Network-Centric Warfare, And Agile, Self-Synchronized C2: Impacts To Data Fusion Process Design

By

One of the primary if not the central motivating rationale for Network-Centric Warfare (NCW) is that NCW provides an enabling mechanism for information sharing and shared understanding and awareness of military situations of interest, that in turn allows the realization of entirely new concepts of C2 that are advertised as providing greatly increased agility, speed of command, and synchronization in C2. In turn, the underlying enabling IT mechanism for NCW is the Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA) concept, within which all functional services, to include Data Fusion Services, will presumably operate. These attractive but as-yet-not-fully-defined concepts represent a challenge to the Data Fusion community in terms of understanding the implications of the evolving NCW, SOA, and new C2 concepts on the design of Data Fusion Services. Key to this understanding in particular is the need for a close dialog with the C2 research community on exactly what the information needs of new C2 concepts will be and how those needs can best be met by appropriately-designed Data Fusion Services. This talk will address each of these issues and argue for the need for both: (1) a multi-community approach to the architecting of effective and efficient SOA's, and (2) for new initiatives in distributed Data Fusion to address the specific technical challenges of NCW-specific Data Fusion Service design and implementation. (It should be noted that this paper is drawn largely from US literature and so presents a US-based viewpoint developed by the author; the paper does not represent any official US governmental views.) This brief paper is intended to sketch the topical areas that will be addressed in the associated Keynote speech.

4Optimal Design Of Measurement Network For Neutronic Activity Field Reconstruction By Data Assimilation

By

Using data assimilation framework, to merge information from model and measurement, an optimal reconstruction of the neutronic activity field can be determined for a nuclear reactor core. In this paper, we focus on solving the inverse problem of determining an optimal repartition of the measuring instruments within the core, to get the best possible results from the data assimilation reconstruction procedure. The position optimisation is realised using Simulated Annealing algorithm, based on the Metropolis-Hastings one. Moreover, in order to address the optimisation computing challenge, algebraic improvements of data assimilation have been developed and are presented here.

10Optimal Experiment Design In A Filtering Context With Application To Sampled Network Data

By

We examine the problem of optimal design in the context of filtering multiple random walks. Specifically, we define the steady state E-optimal design criterion and show that the underlying optimization problem leads to a second order cone program. The developed methodology is applied to tracking network flow volumes using sampled data, where the design variable corresponds to controlling the sampling rate. The optimal design is numerically compared to a myopic and a naive strategy. Finally, we relate our work to the general problem of steady state optimal design for state space models.

21DTIC ADA074205: Preliminary Design Of A Network Virtual Data Base System.

By

Development of the Network Virtual Data Base System (NVDBS) and the Adaptive User Interface (AUI) address several needs of DOD intelligence systems. The NVDBS could provide a bridge between different data base management systems (DMBSs)) on different host computers (nodes) linked through a network, without being required to know how to access each DBMS directly. The network level description of the information and its logical structures would be interactively available to the casual user. The informed user could then 'navigate' through the Network Data Model (NDM). Further, the analyst could discover and link correlated data, for the NVDBS will support 'virtual linkages' between records physically located on different DBMSs of the NVDBS network. For a DBMS to be accessible on the NVDBS network, it must be on a node of the network, and must be linked to the NVDBS through an interface tailored to the idiosyncrasies of the particular DBMS and node. The NVDBS will behave as an ordinary user of each DBMS on the network. The NVDBS also will support the creation of 'virtual linkages' between record instances physically located on different hosts. This report overviews the preliminary design study. (Author)

23Tracking Network Events With Write Optimized Data Structures: The Design And Implementation Of TWIAD: The Write-Optimized IP Address Database

By

Access to network traffic records is an integral part of recognizing and addressing network security breaches. Even with the increasing sophistication of network attacks, basic network events such as connections between two IP addresses play an important role in any network defense. Given the duration of current attacks, long-term data archival is critical but typically very little of the data is ever accessed. Previous work has provided tools and identified the need to trace connections. However, traditional databases raise performance concerns as they are optimized for querying rather than ingestion. The study of write-optimized data structures (WODS) is a new and growing field that provides a novel approach to traditional storage structures (e.g., B-trees). WODS trade minor degradations in query performance for significant gains in the ability to quickly insert more data elements, typically on the order of 10 to 100 times more inserts per second. These efficient, out-of-memory data structures can play a critical role in enabling robust, long-term tracking of network events. In this paper, we present TWIAD, the Write-optimized IP Address Database. TWIAD uses a write-optimized B-tree known as a B {\epsilon} tree to track all IP address connections in a network traffic stream. Our initial implementation focuses on utilizing lower cost hardware, demonstrating that basic long-term tracking can be done without advanced equipment. We tested TWIAD on a modest desktop system and showed a sustained ingestion rate of about 20,000 inserts per second.

24Relaxing Constraints In Stateful Network Data Plane Design

By

Supporting programmable states in the data plane of a forwarding element, e.g., a switch or a NIC, has recently attracted the interest of the research community, which is now looking for the right abstraction to enable the programming of stateful network functions in hardware at line rate. We challenge the conservative assumptions of state-of-the-art abstractions in this field, e.g. always assuming minimum size packets arriving back-to-back. Using trace-based simulations we show that by making more realistic assumptions on the traffic characteristics, e.g. larger average packet size, we can relax the design constraints that currently limit the set of functions that can be implemented at line rate, allowing for more complex functions, with no harm for performance.

39Design And Performance Analysis Of Asynchronous Network On Chip For Streaming Data Transmission On FPGA

The majority of the system on chip (SoC) uses the network on chip (NoC) as routing ports for data transfer from node-to-node with minimal power consumption and low latency and high throughput. This paper concentrates on the ability to model the asynchronous NoCs on the asynchronous circuits on field programmable gate arrays (FPGAs). A 3×3 NoC and its universal asynchronous receiver transmitter (UART) protocol is designed and its simulation of the Verilog hardware description language (VHDL) code is done and tested on the Artix-7 FPGA kit, the testing processes in done using the Chipscope tool. In order to meet target requirements in terms of power consumption and latency, the label switching (LS) technique is used as routing. The proposed LS-NoC with level-encoded dual-rail (LEDR) encoding technique provides throughput by registering the packet between the different routers and it helps to improve throughput and speed. The effectiveness of the data transfer is measured and analyzed through a synthesis summary in terms of lookup table’s (LUT’s), slice registers, flip flops’s (FF’s), latency, and packet delivery ratio (PDR) for the traffic pattern generator. The proposed NoC is designed for 8×8 and each port size is 21 bits including ID’s of source and destination routers. The results can be justified by following results: improvement of LUTs is about 12%, flip-flops are 7%, improvement of throughput is 23% and delay is reduced by 26%
