2ERIC ED085596: Guidelines For The Chief Of Police. Criminal Justice Research. Prevention And Control Of Collective Violence, Volume I.

By

The objective of this study is to provide local law enforcement agencies with guidelines for the collection and dissemination of elements of information required for sound decision making in response to the threat or actual initiation of collective violence. Informal, semi-structured interviews in fourteen selected cities and six State police departments with law enforcement officials who have been, or are likely to be, acting in a key, decision making capacity during an episode of collective violence were conducted to develop recommendations. Four steps were followed: literature survey, consultation with a panel of active law enforcement specialists, field survey, and analysis, interpretation, and review of data. That research resulted in this document, one in a series of five, which outlines for the Chief of Police the need for guidelines, purpose of guidelines, methods of preparation, basic propositions, discussion of terms, information requirements for prevention and control, planning, training, operation, and evaluation of programs to prevent and control collective violence. Related documents are directed to community relations personnel (CE 000 821), intelligence personnel (CE 000 822), patrol commanders (CE 000 823), and patrol personnel (CE 000 824). (KP)

3How Criminal Justice And Statutory Agencies And Partnerships Can Intervene Effectively To Reduce The Risk Of Future Violence

By

The Mayor of London Office for Policing and Crime (MOPAC) has procured this Rapid Evidence Assessment (REA) to synthesise the best available evidence around violent reoffending and provide the firm basis for violence reduction work in the Mayor’s next Police and Crime Plan period. The review will focus on adult males in the Criminal Justice System (CJS) and how to reduce repeat, violent offending post-conviction. A separate piece of research is looking at the causes and best interventions to be used for violence committed by those aged under 26. Therefore, to avoid duplication, this review will not include any research specifically and only focused on those under 26 years old. The aim of the review is to provide a summary of the available evidence for interventions designed to reduce violent reoffending amongst males already in the CJS. The review will support the delivery of effective, evidence-based interventions that will help the Mayor achieve his stated objective of reducing the risk of convicted offenders committing future violence.

By

The Roy Green ShowFollowing the Parkland school shooting, there is concern that children who are disabled and/or living with autism are facing increased hostility and distrust from their fellow students. Meanwhile, Nikolas Cruz has been receiving money from sympathizers, for his prison commissary account, as well as love letters. There are also comments on social media accusing the Parkland school survivors of being responsible for bullying Cruz and instigating his actions. Guest: Rob Benn-Frenette, Co-founder and co-executive director, BullyingCanada Inc.-Roy continues his discussion about bullying and whether or not it can contribute to violence in schools. Guest: Barbara Coloroso.  International parenting, bullying expert, author of 'The Bully, the Bullied and the Bystander'-Kathleen Wynne is promising billions of dollars of goodies to voters in time for the June election - all while Ontario carries the largest non-national debt in the world. Of course, promises like this are routine at election time. Rachel Notley will do the same in Alberta one year from now and B.C. Premier John Horgan will follow suit when the NDP/Green coalition dissolves. Guest: Dan Kelly, president and CEO of the Canadian Federation of Independent Business-Roy asks callers whether or not election-time promises work on them.-Saskatchewan premier Scott Moe has warned British Columbia premier John Horgan that Saskatchewan may engage in economic sanctions against B.C., including reducing export permits of oil from the province if Horgan keeps causing delays to the construction of the Trans Canada pipeline. In the wake of the ongoing oil pipeline politics in western Canadian, Roy asks Dan McTeague of GasBuddy.com, what Canadians will likely be paying for gasoline this spring and summer.  Guest: Dan McTeague, senior analyst with GasBuddy.com and Liberal member of parliament for 18 years-Federal Justice Minister Jody Wilson-Raybould introduced Bill C-75 to change Canada's criminal justice system by modifying the jury selection process and require judges to consider vulnerable populations in cases before them. The bill was introduced following the outcry about the acquital of Saskatchewan farmer Gerald Stanley in the death of Colten Boushie. Will Bill C-75 be an improvement and successfully handle issues where discrimination is a concern? Guest: Scott Newark, former Alberta prosecutor and executive officer of the Canadian Police Association, now a security and justice policy analyst and adjunct Professor at Simon Fraser UniversityLearn more about your ad choices. Hearing Before The Subcommittee On Criminal Justice, Drug Policy, And Human Resources Of The Committee On Government Reform. House Of Representatives, One Hundred Sixth Congress, First Session (May 20, 1999).

By

School violence at all levels of education is an issue that Congress has a responsibility to address. By calling together diverse groups from across the Nation, this subcommittee of the House of Representatives worked with federal, state, and local officials to confront a national problem. Statements and letters were received from representatives from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration; the National District Attorneys Association; the National Association of School Counselors; the National Rifle Association; law enforcement officers; and university and school personnel. The hearing focused on whether federal programs operate efficiently and effectively in combating school violence and whether needed improvements are being made. It attempted to gather information on what promising approaches are being pursued in states, communities, and schools and what Congress can do to facilitate these goals. Questions were also addressed concerning the Internet and its potential role in promoting violence. (Contains 79 references.) (JDM)

24ERIC ED444094: Preventing School Violence: Plenary Papers Of The 1999 Conference On Criminal Justice Research And Evaluation--Enhancing Policy And Practice Through Research, Volume 2. National Institute Of Justice Research Forum.

By

This booklet contains conference presentations from the 1999 National Institute of Justice's research forum on preventing school violence. The theme of the conference was "Enhancing Policy and Practice through Research." Three researchers were asked to speak on topics of school violence since effective preventive policy and practices are increasingly needed. The three speakers demonstrated the concept that policy grounded in research promises to be most effective when it draws on a range of disciplines. Sheppard G. Kellan, public health psychiatrist, discussed the importance of community involvement in designing prevention programs. Ron Prinz, psychology professor, offers insights of psychology and the importance of considering developmental perspective in prevention. Joseph Sheley, sociologist, looks at weapons carrying by youth and the ways schools have lowered weapons-related incidents. (Contains 91 notes and 4 tables.) (JDM)

27ERIC ED504027: Criminal Justice Issues For Arizona. The Pinal County Domestic-Violence Court Some Early But Encouraging Results. Issue 3, August 2008

By

This brief, the third issue in the "Criminal Justice Issues for Arizona" series, reveals that Pinal County's specialized court for domestic-violence cases offers some promising results for dealing with this common and complex offense. This report contains an analysis of data collected in the Pinal County Domestic Violence Database, which as of April 2008 contained 666 case records of domestic-violence offenders who were processed by one of the three courts. The database also contained information on a comparison group of offenders; however, these offenders are not included in this analysis because of insufficient numbers. Court officials are currently developing a more appropriate comparison group for use in a subsequent analysis. Table 3 presents the frequency and percent of offenses by levels of education: 8th grade and below, some high school, high school diploma, some college, college graduate, post-graduate degree, and unknown. Key findings include: (1) Offenders showed a significant increase in their self-reported coping abilities and in their satisfaction with the criminal-justice system during their period of supervision; (2) Offenders showed a significant decrease in their self-reported propensity for abusiveness to an intimate partner during their period of supervision; and (3) Only 9% of offenders committed another offense while in the program. (Contains 14 tables.)

32Interventions To Prevent Violence Against Young Women Who Have Had Contact With The Criminal Justice System: Protocol For A Scoping Review

By

ABSTRACT Introduction Most young women (aged <25 years) who have had contact with the criminal justice system have also been victims of violence. This scoping review will examine what is known about interventions to prevent violence against young women who have had, or are at risk of having, contact with the criminal justice system. Methods and analysis We will search key health, criminology and social science databases (Medline, Criminal Justice Abstracts, and Web of Science) for studies published in English from 1 January 2000 until 23 March 2021. We will also use keyword searches in Google Scholar to identify additional relevant grey literature. Peer reviewed studies and grey literature reporting an evaluation or describing an intervention to prevent violence against young women who have had, or are at risk of having, contact with the criminal justice system will be included. To provide context on the quality of evidence supporting potentially effective interventions, we will use the Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) Critical Appraisal Tools to assess the quality of included peer reviewed studies that evaluated an intervention. The findings will be presented narratively. Ethics This review is exempt from ethics approval as it will synthesise findings from published studies with existing ethics approval.

36ERIC ED085599: Guidelines For The Patrol Commander. Criminal Justice Research. Prevention And Control Of Collective Violence, Volume IV.

That research resulted in this document, one in a series of five, which outlines for the Patrol Commander the need for guidelines, purpose of guidelines, methods of preparation, basic propositions, discussion of terms, information requirements for prevention and control, planning, training, operation, and evaluation of programs to prevent and control collective violence. Related documents are directed to chiefs of police (CE 000 820), community relations personnel (CE 000 821), intelligence personnel (CE 000 822), and patrol personnel (CE 000 824). (KP)

37ERIC ED290062: Anti-Gay Violence. Hearing On Anti-Gay Violence Before The Subcommittee On Criminal Justice Of The Committee On The Judiciary. House Of Representatives, Ninety-Ninth Congress, Second Session (October 9, 1986).

By

This document presents witness testimonies and prepared statements from the Congressional hearing called to examine the issue of antigay violence. In his opening statement, Representative John Conyers, Jr. presents statistics which attest to a rise in antigay violence since the murders of San Francisco Mayor George Moscone and City Supervisor Harvey Milk in 1979. He notes that there are currently no federal statutes which specifically prohibit antigay violence and stresses the need for this hearing to examine the level of violence being directed toward homosexuals and to determine what needs to be done about it. Witnesses providing testimony include: (1) Kevin Berrill, National Gay and Lesbian Task Force; (2) Diana Christensen, Community United Against Violence; (3) David Wertheimer, New York City Gay and Lesbian Anti-Violence Project; (4) Gregory M. Herek, American Psychological Association; (5) Jacqueline Schafer, liaison to the gay community for the district attorney for the County of New York; (6) Robert Johnston, Jr., New York City Police Chief; and (7) Joyce Hunter, Institute for the Protection of Lesbian and Gay Youth. Kathleen Sarris, Robert Gravel, and William Hassell describe violence directed against them because of their homosexuality. Witnesses cite studies of antigay violence, give case examples of violence against homosexuals, and make recommendations to the federal government concerning a response to the problem. Relevant materials consisting of prepared statements, letters, and a news article are appended. (NB)

45Negotiating Domestic Violence : Police, Criminal Justice, And Victims

That research resulted in this document, one in a series of five, which outlines for the Intelligence Personnel the need for guidelines, purpose of guidelines, methods of preparation, basic propositions, discussion of terms, information requirements for prevention and control, planning, training, operation, and evaluation of programs to prevent and control collective violence. Related documents are directed to chiefs of police (CE 000 820), community relations personnel (CE 000 821), patrol commanders (CE 000 823), and patrol personnel (CE 000 824). (KP)
