5ERIC EJ1068818: Creating Engaged Citizens: Using Young Adult Novels And Thematic Units To Encourage Democratic Action
By ERIC
People who read become absorbed in a process of discovery about the world around them; books open doors to otherwise inaccessible places and introduce readers to profound new ideas. Approximately 15 seventh-, eighth-, and ninth-grade members of the StreetSquash Book Club in Harlem meet on Friday afternoons to read, write, and discuss topics inspired by their reading. The StreetSquash Book Club, which is described in this article, encourages young people to become active, engaged citizens by means of thematic units that use young adult novels as entry points for discussion, games, community interaction, and civil activism. The multifaceted and engaging approach of the StreetSquash Book Club not only instills a love of reading and writing in students but also pushes them to comprehend and employ the awesome powers they possess as citizens of a democracy. This article will explore two of the book club's thematic units: the civil rights movement and the presidential election of 2004. The club focused on the civil rights movement for five weeks during the spring of 2004, coinciding with the fiftieth anniversary of "Brown vs. the Board of Education". The club investigated the presidential election for six weeks during the campaign season of Fall 2004.

9Empower Citizens In The Digital Age: Creating A Vote Leaflet For An Upcoming Vote Via A Digital Democratic Innovation
By Giada Gianola, Dominik Wyss, Anja Heidelberger, Marc Bühlmann, Marlène Gerber and André Bächtiger
Presentation of our Digital Democratic Innovation Digital Democratic Innovations (DDIs), represent democratic innovations such as mini-publics held online (see, e.g., Kennedy et al. 2021). In our study, we use a self-developed DDI to let citizens create a vote leaflet with pro and contra arguments for an upcoming popular vote held in Switzerland. Research goals Our first goal is to assess the effects of DDI-participation on political engagement variables including political interest, respect, trust, competence, and internal efficacy (RQ1). Our second goal is to understand the capacity of DDIs to generate political legitimacy (RQ2). In particular, we research whether having information about the process held on the DDI and the produced output positively affects non-participants’ legitimacy of the process and the output created (i.e., vote leaflet). Besides, we test if a gamification feature of the DDI enhances participation in the DDI (RQ3) and we will further examine the functioning of the platform's peer-review feature by investigating the extent to which argument congruence influences peer-review decisions (RQ4). Procedure In this study, we invite citizens (Swiss German citizens between the age of 18 and 79 who use the internet at least once a week) to participate in a self-developed DDI dubbed “Demokratiefabrik”. Here, they can develop a vote leaflet with arguments in favor and against the issue on the ballot in a popular vote in Switzerland held in June 2023. In the first step, citizens will state their willingness to participate. After stating their willingness, a first survey (T1), in which some political attitudes, variables on political participation, and sociodemographic variables will be collected. Citizens willing to participate will then be randomly divided into treatment and control groups. In the experiment, 1000 citizens of the treatment group will have access to the DDI and thus help develop the vote leaflet (i.e., participants). 400 citizens of the control group receive no access to the DDI. Although they wanted to participate, they were not selected to do so (non-participants). Both groups will then be surveyed again after the vote leaflet is created (T2) and after the vote (T3). Moreover, we will survey (T2bis) 400 randomly drawn Swiss German citizens entitled to vote. This sample will be comparable to the baseline of our sample recruited to participate in our experiment study (Swiss German citizens between the age of 18 and 79 who use the internet at least once a week). Since our control group only consists of participants who showed interest in participating in our DDI, it is not representative of the broader public. Asking a randomly selected sample of Swiss German citizens about their opinions on the Demokratiefabrik and the resulting output (vote leaflet) will give a more representative picture of what the broader public, including citizens showing more skepticism towards online participatory projects, think about digital democratic innovations.

10Environmental Education In Indonesia - Creating Responsible Citizens In The Global South?
Indonesia’s wealth of natural resources is being exploited at breakneck speed, and environmental awareness and knowledge among the populace is limited. This book examines how young people learn about the environment to see how education can help to develop environmental awareness and avert vast environmental destruction, not only in Indonesia, but also in the Global South more generally. Based on in-depth studies conducted in the cities of Yogyakarta and Surabaya, complemented with surveys of students in secondary schools, Environmental Education in Indonesia examines educational curricula, pedagogy and "green" activities to reveal what is currently being done in schools to educate children about the environment. The book investigates the shortcomings in environment education, including underqualified teachers, the civil service mentality, the still-pervasive chalk-and-talk pedagogy and the effect of the examination system. It also analyses the role of local government in supporting (or not) environmental education, and the contribution of environmental NGOs. The book establishes that young people are not currently being exposed to effective environmental education, and the authors propose that the best and most culturally appropriate way forward in Indonesia is to frame pro-environment behaviour and responsibility as a form of citizenship, and specifically that environmental education should be taught as a separate subject. This book will be of great interest to students and scholars of contemporary Indonesia and Southeast Asia, education for sustainability and environmental education, as well as sustainability and sustainable development more generally. The Open Access version of this book, available at http://www.tandfebooks.com/doi/view/10.4324/9780429397981, has been made available under a Creative Commons Attribution-Non Commercial-No Derivatives 4.0 license.

Evan Bayh served on six Senate Committees: Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs, for which he was the chairman of the Subcommittee on International Trade and Finance; Armed Services, for which he was the chairman on Readiness and Management Support; Energy and Natural Resources; the Select Committee on Intelligence; Small Business and Entrepreneurship; and the Special Committee on Aging. While some have been content to let partisanship continue to threaten progress on the Nation's most pressing issues, Evan Bayh has continued to look for ways to build consensus and do what's right for Americans. In January 2005, he spearheaded the creation of the Third Way, an organization focused on commonsense legislative solutions on issues that would otherwise remain bogged down in political turf wars. Senator Bayh also served for more than 4 years as chairman of the Democratic Leadership Council, which offers support to elected officials and community leaders who take a progressive approach to the issues facing the country. Before his election to the Senate, Evan Bayh was elected in 1988 to the first of two terms as Governor of Indiana, where he established the State as one of the strongest, most financially secure economies in the Nation. ''Mr. Bayh's record,'' reported the Wall Street Journal in 1992, ''is one of a genuinely fiscally conservative Democrat.'' Stressing fiscal responsibility, lower taxes, job creation, and lean government, Bayh's list of achievements include 8 years without raising taxes; the greatest single tax cut and largest budget surplus in State history; national leadership in moving people from welfare to work; more dollars for schools every year; high academic standards and new college opportunities for all, including low-income students; more than 350,000 new jobs; tougher laws on crime; and improved environmental quality. Evan Bayh was born in Shirkieville, IN. He graduated with honors in business economics from Indiana University in 1978, and received his law degree from the University of Virginia in 1981. After clerking for a Federal court judge and entering private law practice in Indianapolis, he was elected Indiana's secretary of state in 1986, the first of his five statewide victories. Senator Bayh counts as his most important role and greatest responsibility a position he assumed in November 1995: proud father of twin sons Beau and Nick Date(s) Held: 2010-12-15, 2010-11-30, 2010-12-08, 2010-12-10, 2010-12-14, 2010-12-15, 2010-12-16, 2010-12-20, 2010-12-22 111th Congress, 2nd Session GPO Document Source: CHRG-111shrg64800 Related Items:

16ERIC EJ792671: Creating Global Citizens Through Study Abroad
By ERIC
One of the greatest challenges for a student today is how to live as a responsible citizen in a globalizing world. Today's interconnected world cannot afford bystanders or passive participants. It demands confident, skilled citizens who will make responsible choices that take into consideration how educators allocate resources and what impact their decisions will have on future generations. It is important to have citizens who make decisions marked by these characteristics: (1) intercultural understanding; (2) mindfulness; (3) partnerships; (4) pragmatic hope; and (5) social entrepreneurship. How can educators help students develop these capacities? Among other strategies, higher education must increase the number of students who study outside the United States as part of their formal education. Study abroad programs teach important intercultural and language skills, but the true success of a program occurs within a student, when she/he realizes that she/he can see the world from a different cultural viewpoint. This is true global citizenship. A study published in "Transitions Abroad" magazine by Mary Dwyer and Courtney Peters of the Chicago-based Institute for the International Education of Students documented strong and lasting impacts of study abroad. Years after students return, they continue to learn languages, are keenly aware of other cultures and are more confident and committed to a sensitive global point of view. There is a growing body of literature that documents these and other impacts. Yet far too few U.S. students study abroad--about 1 percent by most estimates--and the numbers are skewed to wealthier students from elite colleges and universities.

17ERIC ED456958: Creating Moral Citizens: Answers From The Ancient, Non-Western World.
By ERIC
A review of educational systems in ancient India and traditional Native America reveals that these cultures went beyond superficial, conventional, or rule-based morality and trained thoughtful, principled wisdom. Common characteristics that may have contributed to training character and creating moral citizens include: a strong sense of community; a communal choice to genuinely value morality; a sense of direct, lifelong accountability to one's teacher, family, and society; the maintenance of high standards in education, character, and citizenship; consistency between moral teaching and behavior by teachers, parents, and community; and the consideration of morality as a universal element of instruction, integral to every domain of the curriculum and life. Since the modern Western world is failing to train moral citizens, perhaps we could incorporate one or more of the characteristics of ancient systems. Some possible routes include mobilizing parents to demand character training in schools; training teachers to teach and model morality; selecting teachers based in part on their moral understanding; educating parents to consistently enforce and support good character; incorporating morality as a universal element in the curriculum; and supporting good character in teachers with respect, higher status, more money, or better students.
