This project examines how and when political consumerism (boycotts and buycotts initiated for political purposes) becomes gendered by theorizing gender identity as dynamically activated rather than statically held. Using a nationally representative survey experiment in the U.S., it tests whether framing corporate actions through peer-based diffusion or top-down moralized appeals activates gender identity and alters consumer choices. The study focuses on abortion-related corporate donations in the U.S. and measures outcomes such as purchase intention and identity salience. By theorizing gender as a conditional identity activated by social cues, the project reframes political consumerism as a dynamic site of political expression rather than a fixed gendered behavior.

This research attempts to explain how advertised products are being used, through the means of semiotic of metaphor by scrutinizing the dynamic relationship between sign and signifier. Semiotic of metaphor makes the products ‘alive’ within human society hence, this implies that the very existence of human beings is no longer determined by the presence of another human being, instead the very existence is now determined by the presence of certain commercial products in possession. The society, in term of consumerism, views the products as animate or living entities within the sphere of living. Commercial advertisements use metaphorical expressions to relate and exchange in two major concepts: products are humans, and humans are products’ users. Thus, nowadays, humans tend to seek their purpose of living and existence through consumerism. The result of this research shows that television commercial advertisements mainly work by means of certain metaphorical symbolism: it shapes society’s perspective into believing that the very existence of human beings, the actualization of self, and differentiations among them are achieved by using or purchasing certain advertised products therefore, the products serve as the symbols of those achievements.

Not only in terms of personal choices, or conscientious trends in the vegan (and non- vegan) marketplace, but as a collective objective that seems to regard consumerism as an ultimate goal in vegan activism – a idea commonly thought of as ‘going mainstream.’ With a rise in media and celebrity attention directed towards the vegan lifestyle, the conditions and objectives of vegan consumerism have built momentum. Vegan consumerism might arguably be characterised in terms of plant-based diets that obscure the complexity of other ethical choices on the basis of marketability, campaigns (and fundraisers) that encourage non-vegan multi-national brands to provide vegan options (despite a plethora of other unethical and animal exploitative products), or even the demand that vegans deserve ‘faux’ versions of every animal-based product they once enjoyed (regardless of need). The consequences of these consumerism-driven approaches are slowly being brought to the forefront, with discussions about the relations between capitalism, animal liberation and intersectionality. In the blog Chickpeas and Change, also reposted in Species and Class, Ali Seiter’s article ‘Veganism and Consumerism’ points to the ‘re-centring of the human experience.’ ‘Vegan consumerism,’ Seiter realises, ‘becomes a project to benefit humans who eat a vegan diet rather than other animals oppressed by speciesism.’ Similarly, in Direct Action Everywhere, Hana Low’s ‘Vegan Options are Not Animal Liberation’ reveals how this re-centring of the human experience though consumerism, is also being campaigned for by animal advocacy organisations. In response to these articles, this workshop aims to facilitate a critical dialogue around the notion of vegan consumerism and what it really means for veganism to ‘go mainstream.’ Primarily, this workshop seeks to address the intersectional dynamics and implications of vegan consumerism, particularly in terms of intersectional oppression. 37ERIC EJ919883: An Investigation On The Level Of Conscious Consumerism Of Primary School Students In Terms Of Various Variables

The purpose of this is study is to analyze the level of conscious consumerism of primary school students. For that purpose, a 19-item scale consisting of three sub-dimensions was developed. In order to test conduct validity and reliability, the scale was administered on 113 students studying in Sakarya. In accordance with the data obtained, an exploratory factor analysis was conducted for construct validity purposes. The scale with a Cronbach Alpha reliability coefficient of 0.77 accounts for 49.5 of the variance. The sub-dimensions of the scale are "consciousness of consumer responsibility", "consciousness of quality" and "consciousness of budget-price". The fit index values which obtained from confirmatory factor analysis showed that the three-dimensional level of conscious consumerism scale fit well. The scale was administered on 473 4th grade students--223 females and 250 males--who studied in Sakarya during the educational year of 2009-2010. The study concluded that there were meaningful differences in consciousness of consumer responsibility, consciousness of quality and the whole scale depending on the educational status of mothers. Results were discussed in light of literature and some suggestions were given for further studies.

Advances in digital technology and the widespread use of social media have influenced information consumption patterns and spending habits among university students. This study examines the relationship between the spread of hoaxes on digital platforms and the emergence of consumptive lifestyles in university students, while emphasizing the role of digital literacy as a form of control. The research was conducted through a literature review method by examining various relevant sources. The findings reveal that social media is not only a means of communication, but also a medium for spreading misleading content that triggers irrational purchases. As a generation that is active online, students are easily exposed to the influence of trends and social demands, which leads to excessive spending habits. Low understanding of digital and financial literacy, emotional attitudes, and social influences reinforce this tendency. As a result, students have the potential to experience financial problems, waste, and a mindset that prioritizes material things too much. On the other hand, the lack of habit of seeking truthful information makes students vulnerable to becoming victims and spreaders of hoaxes. For this reason, improving digital literacy skills and educating personal financial management are crucial solutions in shaping a young generation that is more critical and wise in the digital era. Cooperation between universities, the government, and the community is needed to address this issue as a whole.
