1Chapter 8 Constructing A Wider View On Memory - Beyond The Dichotomy Of Field And Observer Perspectives

Memory perspectives on past events allegedly take one of two shapes. In field memories, we recall episodes from a first-person point of view, while in observer memories, we look at a past scene from a third-person perspective. But this mere visuospatial dichotomy faces several practical and conceptual challenges. First, this binary distinction is not exhaustive. Second, this characterization insufficiently accounts for the phenomenology of observer memories. Third, the focus on the visual aspect of memory perspective neglects emotional, agential, and self-related social aspects. Fourth, the focus on the time of recall neglects the fact that visual, emotional, agential, and social aspects of perspective can also be dissociated in the original experience. In this chapter, we move away from the standard visual dichotomy. Instead, we propose that memory perspective is better understood along four lines: visual, agential, emotional, and social. Drawing on empirical research, we argue that these dimensions predict a disposition to recall a past event based on the present situation of the memorizer. This account supports seeing episodic memory as a natural kind, supported by scenario construction mechanisms and minimal memory traces. By remapping the classic distinction between field and observer perspectives along four dimensions, our proposal provides explanatory advantages and secures practical gains by enabling testable hypotheses.

2Formalism Of Gauge Invariant Curvatures And Constructing The Cubic Vertices For Massive Spin-3/2 Field In AdS_4 Space

By

We study the interaction of massive spin-3/2 field with electromagnetic and gravitational fields in the four dimensional AdS space and construct the corresponding cubic vertices. Construction is based on generalization of Fradkin-Vasiliev formalism, developed for massless higher spin fields, to massive fermionic higher spin fields. The main ingredients of this formalism are the gauge invariant curvatures. We build such curvatures for the massive theory under consideration and show how the cubic vertices are written in their terms.

3Dynamical Population Synthesis: Constructing The Stellar Single And Binary Contents Of Galactic Field Populations

By

[abridged] The galactic field's late-type stellar single and binary population is calculated on the supposition that all stars form as binaries in embedded star clusters. A recently developed tool (Marks, Kroupa & Oh) is used to evolve the binary star distributions in star clusters for a few Myr so that a particular mixture of single and binary stars is achieved. On cluster dissolution the population enters the galactic field with these characteristics. The different contributions of single stars and binaries from individual star clusters which are selected from a power-law embedded star cluster mass function are then added up. This gives rise to integrated galactic field binary distribution functions (IGBDFs) resembling a galactic field's stellar content (Dynamical Population Synthesis). It is found that the binary proportion in the galactic field of a galaxy is larger the lower the minimum cluster mass, the lower the star formation rate, the steeper the embedded star cluster mass function and the larger the typical size of forming star clusters in the considered galaxy. In particular, period-, mass-ratio- and eccentricity IGBDFs for the Milky Way are modelled. The afore mentioned theoretical IGBDFs agree with independently observed distributions. Of all late-type binaries, 50% stem from M 10^4M_sun clusters. Comparison of the G-dwarf and M-dwarf binary population indicates that the stars formed in mass-segregated clusters. In particular it is pointed out that although in the present model all M-dwarfs are born in binary systems, in the Milky Way's Galactic field the majority ends up being single stars. This work predicts that today's binary frequency in elliptical galaxies is lower than in spiral and in dwarf-galaxies. The period and mass-ratio distributions in these galaxies are explicitly predicted.

5ERIC ED465994: Conducting (and Constructing) Research On Writing: Rhetorics From The Field.

By

Researchers seem to discuss only rarely the actual activities and strategies involved in the research process. Part of the problem is in the current conception of research method, which continues to insist that empirical methods are neutral procedures for obtaining results. At every step of the research process, researchers discursively construct and alter their methods, but little of this information is translated into resulting written texts. A project which involved the interviews of composition researchers addresses this gap, asking how they conduct and construct research. One result of these interviews is a deeper understanding of the range of ways in which social factors might affect a researcher's text. In addition, the interviews revealed that those researchers wanting to effect local, situated ends for their research use language that emphasizes measurability and validity while those wanting to influence the direction of the field may not choose the agreed-upon language of a field's practitioners. Composition studies need to adopt a more explicitly rhetorical and situated perspective on research methods, which draws attention to the audiences, purposes, and genres for which research is conducted. 6A Possible Way For Constructing Generators Of The Poincare Group In Quantum Field Theory

By

Starting from the instant form of relativistic quantum dynamics for a system of interacting fields, where amongst the ten generators of the Poincare group only the Hamiltonian and the boost operators carry interactions, we offer an algebraic method to satisfy the Poincare commutators. We do not need to employ the Lagrangian formalism for local fields with the Noether representation of the generators. Our approach is based on an opportunity to separate in the primary interaction density a part which is the Lorentz scalar. It makes possible apply the recursive relations obtained in this work to construct the boosts in case of both local field models (for instance with derivative couplings and spins $\geq1$) and their nonlocal extensions. Such models are typical of the meson theory of nuclear forces, where one has to take into account vector meson exchanges and introduce meson-nucleon vertices with cutoffs in momentum space. Considerable attention is paid to finding analytic expressions for the generators in the clothed-particle representation, in which the so-called bad terms are simultaneously removed from the Hamiltonian and the boosts. Moreover, the mass renormalization terms introduced in the Hamiltonian at the very beginning turn out to be related to certain covariant integrals that are convergent in the field models with appropriate cutoff factors.

7On The Methods For Constructing Meson-Baryon Reaction Models Within Relativistic Quantum Field Theory

By

Within the relativistic quantum field theory, we analyze the differences between the $\pi N$ reaction models constructed from using (1) three-dimensional reductions of Bethe-Salpeter Equation, (2) method of unitary transformation, and (3) time-ordered perturbation theory. Their relations with the approach based on the dispersion relations of S-matrix theory are dicusssed.

By

To fully acculturate into society, English language learners (ELLs) need to be conversant with the language and culture of their peers. The National Association for Media Literacy (NAMLE) asserts that media, including the electronic media, are an integral component of modern culture and function as an agent of socialization. They assert that to be literate in the 21st century, students must learn to process their own meanings and construct their own media messages. NAMLE further argues that media education is essential for all who wish to become informed, engaged members of a democratic society (2009). If media literacy is a valuable--indeed essential--component of education for mainstream students, English language learners must also be given this learning opportunity. Schools and teachers should never deny ELLs the curriculum that they deem is important for others. The students will be immersed in the multimodalities of the new media throughout their lives; they need to learn how to use it and how to critically analyze it. Additionally, there are special considerations that make media literacy especially useful for someone learning English. The language barrier that prevents ease of communication is greatly alleviated by the visual, aural, and tactile nature of electronic media. This helps to make the language and the content very comprehensible (Lee 2006). The goal of this article is to briefly document ways that the author's students "obtained," "processed," and "constructed" English, terms taken from the standards published in 2006 by Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL). These three skills are roughly equivalent to traditional reading, writing, and comprehension, but are more useful in describing the skills of the multiple literacies needed for the multimodalities of modern life. In this article, Glori Smith explains that while looking for ways to use new technology to draw her students into greater use of written language, she decided to try blogging to help her students become more proficient in English usage. The only thing unique about the assignments from the project she describes here is that students were online and made use of the multimodalities in today's media world. It is a new way to engage in the traditional skills of reading and writing and to demonstrate understanding. Smith writes that the "cool factor" of doing the assignments in a blogging format, seems to have made a difference, resulting in higher volume and more attention to quality than most other writing assignments.

10The Problem Of Constructing The Current Operators In Quantum Field Theory

Lorentz invariance of the current operators implies that they satisfy the well-known commutation relations with the representation operators of the Lorentz group. It is shown that if the standard construction of the current operators in quantum field theory is used then the commutation relations are broken by the Schwinger terms.

By

The primary objective of this study was to compile a list of human factors requirements that must be considered in the construction of field fortifications in the future to ensure a psychologically supportive environment that will enable the occupants to perform effectively both during and following occupancy. A literature survey was conducted. An analysis of the information available revealed the following: The most likely field fortifications to be employed in the foreseeable future are the prefabricated or modularized types; The most important factors related to physical well being are those concerned with nutrition, liquid intake, ventilation, temperature, and work/rest cycles; and The most important factors related to psychological well being are those concerned with space availability/utilization and leadership/management. The most fruitful areas for future research in human factors aspects of field fortifications are: Human engineering the use of space; Systems or techniques for provisioning/reprovisioning; and Leadership/management of shelter living.

12Constructing Non-trivial Elements Of The Shafarevich-Tate Group Of An Abelian Variety Over A Number Field

By

The second part of the Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer (BSD) conjecture gives a conjectural formula for the order of the Shafarevich-Tate group of an elliptic curve in terms of other computable invariants of the curve. Cremona and Mazur initiated a theory that can often be used to verify the BSD conjecture by constructing non-trivial elements of the Shafarevich-Tate group of an elliptic curve by means of the Mordell-Weil group of an ambient curve. In this paper, we generalize Cremona and Mazur's work and give precise conditions under which such a construction can be made for the Shafarevich-Tate group of an abelian variety over a number field. We then give an extension of our general result that provides new theoretical evidence for the BSD conjecture.

13ERIC ED469410: Roundtable On Constructing And Coping With Incarceration And Family Re-Entry: Perspectives From The Field (Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, November 15-16, 2001). Fathers And Families Second-Tier Roundtable Series.

By

Issues of incarceration and its effects on parents, children, families, and communities are as much human development concerns as policy dilemmas. This report synthesizes the discussion of these concerns and their implications for policy, practice, and research as presented at the National Center on Fathers and Families'"Roundtable on Constructing and Coping with Incarceration and Family Re-Entry: Perspectives from the Field." Section 1 compiles summaries of the research papers presented at the roundtable, interspersed with discussants' commentaries. Section 2 describes the current and emerging issues in father incarceration and reentry that arose during the roundtable exchanges, including acknowledging ambivalence toward families of the incarcerated, reassessing assumptions about incarcerated parents, punishing parents and not their children, reentering communities with few resources, sharing information and building trust, surveying existing state efforts, addressing rising rates and declining care, addressing effects on child development, and viewing incarceration as a source of role and social strain. Section 3 offers new directions for research, including evaluating interventions and agencies, translating research findings for practice, and investigating assumptions of causation. Section 4 explores the implications of the issues raised for policymaking, including extending the war metaphor, reconciling social capital and welfare reform, redefining reentry and reintegration, and addressing fatherhood and parenting at the state level. The final section of the report describes lessons learned for practice related to listening to prisoners' children, listening to practitioners, considering issues of abuse and domestic violence, refining the notion of outcomes, articulating the diversity among incarcerated fathers, and understanding practitioners' varying roles in different settings and levels in the system. The roundtable agenda and a list of participants complete the report. (KB)

Abstract: A new stabilized formulation of pyrethrins was field tested against larvae of the western hemlock looper by spraying from a helicopter. A selected number of larvae were placed in foliage on platforms were they were fully exposed to the spray and on small trees where they were partially screened from direct spray contact. Ninety-nine percent and 94 percent of the larvae on the platforms and on the trees, respectively, were paralyzed or killed by the insecticide. Most of the larvae fully exposed on the platforms were knocked down within a few minutes after spraying, whereas knockdown of larvae in the trees occurred over a considerably longer period of time. Recovery rate of paralyzed larvae was higher for those that were slow to be knocked down than for larvae knocked down quickly. 16Constructing A Class Of Solutions For The Hamilton-Jacobi Equation In Field Theory

By

A new approach leading to the formulation of the Hamilton-Jacobi equation for field theories is investigated within the framework of jet-bundles and multi-symplectic manifolds. An algorithm associating classes of solutions to given sets of boundary conditions of the field equations is provided. The paper also puts into evidence the intrinsic limits of the Hamilton-Jacobi method as an algorithm to determine families of solutions of the field equations, showing how the choice of the boundary data is often limited by compatibility conditions.

Controlled field test of stabilized pyrethrins against the western hemlock looper. babel.hathitrust.org/cgi/pt?id=umn.31951d02995483v;view=1...
