This research sought information on whether soldiers believe the assurance confidentiality they receive in a standard Army survey and, if not, what reasons they give for not believing it. Participants (n=40), meeting in small homogeneous groups, completed a standard Army survey that asked questions on six topics of varying sensitivity. These same participants also completed a 3-item questionnaire asking about any confidentiality concerns they may have had while filling out the survey. Then, with their completed survey forms in front of them, they took part in a focus group discussion to elaborate on these concerns. In this paper, we introduce a duo of improvements for the Internet that would lead to better security. The authentication model on the Internet is broken and TLS connections have a considerable overhead. We try to address those issues with changes in both the application layer, discussing a replacement for the DNS system, and in the transport layer, a drop-in replacement for TCP built on top of UDP so that it can run on today's internet infrastructure.

A set of terminals observe correlated data and seek to compute functions of the data using interactive public communication. At the same time, it is required that the value of a private function of the data remains concealed from an eavesdropper observing this communication. In general, the private function and the functions computed by the nodes can be all different. We show that a class of functions are securely computable if and only if the conditional entropy of data given the value of private function is greater than the least rate of interactive communication required for a related multiterminal source-coding task. A single-letter formula is provided for this rate in special cases.

This paper examines how potential conflicts produced by ethical issues such as confidence and confidentiality can affect the research methodology of educational research and evaluation projects. Despite the differences in site selection, clientele, and relationship to treatment, both evaluators and researchers must make adjustments in method to accommodate ethical concerns. Based on a research study of the political socialization process of Colombian children and several educational program evaluation projects in New England, participant observation systems are considered for methodological modification for ethical reasons. In both the research and evaluation studies, the investigators felt that the risk of the Hawthorne effect or other biasing effects must be subordinated to the observed subjects' right to know the nature of the observations. In addition, honoring assurances of confidentiality to one group of subjects enhances the confidence that other groups will have in the investigators' promises. Examples of ethical conflicts that arise uniquely in muliclientele program evlauations are also described. (Author/DE)

Recent developments in cloud storage architectures have originated new models of online storage as cooperative storage systems and interconnected clouds. Such distributed environments involve many organizations, thus ensuring confidentiality becomes crucial: only legitimate clients should recover the information they distribute among storage nodes. In this work we present a unified framework for verifying confidentiality of dispersal algorithms against probabilistic models of intruders. Two models of intruders are given, corresponding to different types of attackers: one aiming at intercepting as many slices of information as possible, and the other aiming at attacking the storage providers in the network. Both try to recover the original information, given the intercepted slices. By using probabilistic model checking, we can measure the degree of confidentiality of the system exploring exhaustively all possible behaviors. Our experiments suggest that dispersal algorithms ensure a high degree of confidentiality against the slice intruder, no matter the number of storage providers in the system. On the contrary, they show a low level of confidentiality against the provider intruder in networks with few storage providers (e.g. interconnected cloud storage solutions).
