Copyright vs Community in the Age of Computer Networks Richard Matthew Stallman Abstract : Copyright developed in the age of the printing press, and was designed to fit with the system of centralized copying imposed by the printing press. But the copyright system does not fit well with computer networks, and only draconian punishments can enforce it. The global corporations that profit from copyright are lobbying for draconian punishments, and to increase their copyright power while suppressing public access to technology. But if we seriously hope to serve the only legitimate purpose of copyright--to promote progress, for the benefit of the public--then we must make changes in the other direction. In this thesis, we analyze various factors that affect quality of service (QoS) communication in high-speed, packet-switching sub-networks. We hypothesize that sub-network-wide bandwidth reservation and guaranteed CPU processing power at endpoint systems for handling data traffic are indispensable to achieving hard end-to-end quality of service. Different bandwidth reservation strategies, traffic characterization schemes, and scheduling algorithms affect the network resources and CPU usage as well as the extent that QoS can be achieved. In order to analyze those factors, we design and implement a communication layer. Our experimental analysis supports our research hypothesis. The Resource ReSerVation Protocol (RSVP) is designed to realize resource reservation. Our analysis of RSVP shows that using RSVP solely is insufficient to provide hard end-to-end quality of service in a high-speed sub-network. Analysis of the IEEE 802.lp protocol also supports the research hypothesis.

This thesis develops an architecture for dynamic distributed military operations research. This architecture assumes that a network of heterogeneous computing devices connects forces throughout the battlespace. Both the raw data about the battlespace and the operations research models used to analyze this data are accessible to devices on this network. The thesis designs a system using this architecture that invokes operations research network optimization algorithms to solve problems involving movement of people and equipment over dynamic road networks. A specific application is, implemented to help a medic find the nearest aid station using a shortest path algorithm. This application marshals the most current data on unit locations and road conditions (distributed across the computing network) and locates on the network an appropriate algorithm that is then used to construct a solution. The answer is returned to the user as a web page in a form appropriate for his computing device. The application is implemented with existing technologies including the Java computer language, Konig, a Java-based tool for representing networks and graphs, and Hypertext Markup Language, a format for shared information on the Internet. This system uses operations research tools to transform data into decisions in real-time or near real-time.

Computer Networks is an active peer-reviewed scientific journal currently published 18 times a year by Elsevier. Launched in 1976, it publishes the latest research on all aspects of computer communications networking of interest to scholars, managers and operators of networks, as well as designers and implementers. Each issue features original articles covering a range of topics including, but not limited to, communication network architectures, communication network protocols, network services and applications, network security and privacy, network operation and management, and discrete algorithms and discrete modeling. It also publishes two types of micro-articles : “Dataset Articles” that describe open datasets available in a redacted and organized way, and “Open-Source Software Articles” reporting on open source software that has been used to obtain scholarly results in the area of computer networks. Occasional special-focus issues are dedicated to a particular topic or contain proceedings of relevant conferences and symposia. This study aimed to develop a brain-computer interface that can control an electric wheelchair using electroencephalography (EEG) signals. First, we used the Mind Wave Mobile 2 device to capture raw EEG signals from the surface of the scalp. The signals were transformed into the frequency domain using fast Fourier transform (FFT) and filtered to monitor changes in attention and relaxation. Next, we performed time and frequency domain analyses to identify features for five eye gestures: opened, closed, blink per second, double blink, and lookup. The base state was the opened-eyes gesture, and we compared the features of the remaining four action gestures to the base state to identify potential gestures. We then built a multilayer neural network to classify these features into five signals that control the wheelchair’s movement. Finally, we designed an experimental wheelchair system to test the effectiveness of the proposed approach. The results demonstrate that the EEG classification was highly accurate and computationally efficient. Moreover, the average performance of the brain-controlled wheelchair system was over 75% across different individuals, which suggests the feasibility of this approach.

Operational Technology (OT) networks are critical to mission operations on many naval platforms, yet it is often difficult to effectively communicate their status and engage in efficient decision-making at all levels of operation. While the complexity of networks has increased, visualization methods suiting the needs of a diverse set of users have not kept up. To address this problem, this research evaluated whether visualization, provided to a small group of operators acting in a shared work environment on network management, can be supported using commercial off-the-shelf, lightweight, portable augmented reality (AR) technology. The work included building a prototype AR OT network on a U.S. Navy guided missile destroyer (DDG) three-dimensional model with four decks and simulated interconnected ship systems. We then designed and implemented a network infrastructure between a set of Hololenses, and built an application that allowed multiple users to collaborate by viewing the same virtual model in a real-world space setting. A study tested the system interface's usability and its value in network management scenarios. The results suggest that a lightweight AR system, with an interface that supports small-team collaboration, could be a valuable tool for increasing situational awareness in cyberspace and allowing effective team decision-making.

It is the interconnection of multiple devices, generally termed as Hosts connected using multiple paths for the purpose of sending receiving data or media. There are also multiple devices or mediums which helps in the communication between two different devices which are known as Network devices. Ex Router, Switch, Hub, Bridge. The layout pattern using which devices are interconnected is called network topology. Such as Bus, Star, Mesh, Ring, Daisy chain. The Logistics Wargaming Simulation (LogWarS) is a computer program designed to facilitate the incorporation of logistics considerations and constraints into wargames played at the Wargaming department of the Naval War College. LogWarS helps a wargame umpire create a scenario of units and bases, their supply requirements, and the transportation assets available to move supplies. Once the scenario is created, LogWarS steps it forward in time, allowing the umpire to examine the supply status of the units and bases at various points in the future. The umpire uses the supply status to inform the wargame players of their ability to conduct operations. The umpire may also modify elements of the scenario, at any time step, in order to reflect events in the wargame-events such as the destruction of supply depots or the addition of transportation assets. LogWarS adds a graphical interface and new ways to follow the supply status of units and bases to the original version of the Surge and Sustainment Simulation program created by two other Naval Postgraduate School students.

Detailed description about computer networking.

Social Network Analysis (SNA) has been proposed as a tool to defeat transnational terrorist groups such as Al Qaeda. However, SNA is an descriptive tool that is a product of sociology and not an offensive tool used to attack a social network. SNA was not designed to destabilize covert networks that are difficult to observe and penetrate. This work presents a possible way to improve SNAâ s performance against a covert social network by employing the Computer Network Attack (CNA) model. The CNA model is used by computer network security to represent the traditional approach to hacking a computer network. Although not tested in this paper, it is argued that the CNA model should be able to improve the accuracy of SNA when applied to a covert social network by standardizing the destabilization process and allowing for frequent challenges of operating assumptions. A history and overview of both computer networks and social networks is covered to allow for a comparison of the two networks. The networks have enough similarities to allow the application of the CNA model without major modification from its original form. Assumptions about the security of computer and social networks are examined to clarify how the CNA model can attack a social network. The model is examined for validity and the conclusion is that the CNA model can incorporate SNA into a more methodical approach to achieve better results that using SNA alone. The final portion of the paper details a possible implementation of the CNA model and how it can be used as part of an offensive effort to destabilize a covert social network.

We have recently introduced a multistep extension of the greedy algorithm for modularity optimization. The extension is based on the idea that merging l pairs of communities (l>1) at each iteration prevents premature condensation into few large communities. Here, an empirical formula is presented for the choice of the step width l that generates partitions with (close to) optimal modularity for 17 real-world and 1100 computer-generated networks. Furthermore, an in-depth analysis of the communities of two real-world networks (the metabolic network of the bacterium E. coli and the graph of coappearing words in the titles of papers coauthored by Martin Karplus) provides evidence that the partition obtained by the multistep greedy algorithm is superior to the one generated by the original greedy algorithm not only with respect to modularity but also according to objective criteria. In other words, the multistep extension of the greedy algorithm reduces the danger of getting trapped in local optima of modularity and generates more reasonable partitions.

In this article some issues of application of intelligent technologies at the network monitoring of computer networks (CN) are discussed, which are very important additions to the network monitoring systems. Namely, using of mobile agents in the network monitoring systems and management of CN, as well as methods of machine learning for classification of CN network traffic.
