One of nine brief guides for special educators on using computer technology, this guide focuses on utilizing the telecommunications capabilities of computers. Network capabilities including electronic mail, bulletin boards, and access to distant databases are briefly explained. Networks useful to the educator, general commercial systems, and local bulletin boards are discussed in terms of their capabilities and costs, and specialized systems, such as SpecialNet, are also described. Specific ways in which telecommunications can be of use to the disabled individual are noted; among these are decreased isolation, business transaction services, and computer compensation for physical or sensory disabilities. Specific applications for special education students include communication and joint curriculum projects with distant classes, increased opportunities for written communication, and cross-age tutoring. Name, address, and descriptive information is provided for six networks for educators, six networks for children, and seven projects which integrate computer telecommunications with school programs. End-to-end encryption is not sufficient to prevent compromise of information in a network that employs untrusted subnet (network interface) processors. Addresses, message lengths, and timing of transmissions furnish channels whose bandwidth can be significant.

Much has been written about the automation of factory and office functions. An important aspect of this automation is the ability to communicate and share resources between different physical machines, different administrative and production functions, and different geographic sites. When two or more distinct organizations interconnect their internal computer networks they form an Inter-Organizational Network (ION). IONs support the exchange of computer aided design/computed aided manufacturing data between manufacturers and subcontractors, software distribution from vendors to users, customer input to suppliers' order-entry systems, and the shared use of expensive computational resources by research laboratories, as examples. This thesis analyzes the organization implications of using computer networks for inter-organization communication, and the technical implications of interconnecting networks across organization boundaries. This thesis demonstrates the value of the bimodal approach to system design and analysis in which the author asks both how industry and organization contexts shape a new technology, as well as how a new technology affects the organization and industry contexts in which it is applied. During the 1982-1985; performance-period under this AFOSR Grant, we have carried out research investigations and obtained many significant results, of both theoretical and practical importance. A large multitude of computer communication network architectures, models and control schemes have been developed, analyzed and evaluated.

This report summarizes studies of local, regional, and large scale data communication network problems. Primary emphasis is placed on system issues and tradeoffs. Areas discussed are packet radio system studies, packet radio system algorithms and control, local and regional data network cost comparisons and alternatives, and integrated large scale packet switched network cost and performance. Studies of multidropped, point-to-point, and broad band cable and radio broadcast systems as well as the impact of satellites on network cost and performance are described.

The report studies reliability properties of store-and-forward networks, analysis of network reliability and algorithms for minimum spanning trees. A study of the tradeoffs between network size, connectivity, and component reliability shows that large networks reliability will be a major, and perhaps dominant, design problem. Recursive analysis techniques for loop and tree combinations greatly reduce analysis cost, while improved methods for generating minimum spanning trees have a similar effect for this fundamental network problem.

The objective of the work described herein was to develop, implement, and demonstrate inductively synthesized active control algorithms that minimize a performance metric that is a function of a signal measured by a sensor external to a multivariable control system. The controller is required to control a (potentially nonlinear) plant when subjected to a broadband (impulsive) disturbance signal. Polynomial neural networks (PNNs) are used to implement the control algorithms. To provide controller/secondary feedback compensation filter parameters for the laboratory experiments, and to provide a benchmark with which to compare the empirical results, computer simulation evaluations were also conducted. The report documents controller designs that achieve up to 24.4 dB error improvement relative to the uncontrolled case. Key differences between the present work and that ongoing elsewhere in active control are: (1) The use of broadband impulsive disturbances, which induce a more complex stochastic control scenario than that of narrowband excitation; (2) The potential controller structures are adaptive, nonlinear, infinite impulse response PNNs, not traditional linear, finite impulse response filters; the former offer promising new active control approaches for non-Gaussian, as well as Gaussian, signals, and may be used for multiple-input, multiple-output control of unknown plants. This paper describes a parallelized system, ASSURE, for computing the reliability of embedded avionics flight control systems which are able to reconfigure themselves in the event of failure. ASSURE accepts a grammar that describes a reliability semi-Markov state-space. From this it creates a parallel program that simultaneously generates analyzes the state-space, placing upper and lower bounds on the probability of system failure. ASSURE is implemented on a 32-node Intel iPSC/860, and has achieved high processor efficiencies on real problems. Through a combination of improved algorithms, exploitation of parallelism, and use of an advanced microprocessor architecture, ASSURE has reduced the execution time on substantial problems by a factor of one thousand over previous workstation implementations. Furthermore, ASSURE's parallel execution rate on the iPSC/860 is an order of magnitude faster than its serial execution rate on a Cray-2 supercomputer. While dynamic load balancing is necessary for ASSURE's good performance, it is needed only infrequently; the particular method of load balancing used does not substantially affect performance.

Communication network simulations have typically been visualized in the past through 2D representations, but this is insufficient for battlefield network scenarios. Visual representations of battlefield networks greatly benefit from 3D visualization due to its ability to retain asset location. This research investigates the feasibility of modeling a typical battlefield communication network in a realistic 3D manner and discusses the effects of doing so. The result is an open source, 3D network visualization tool that can create highly intuitive connected battlefield scenes, enabling the user to quickly comprehend network state. It highlights mobile assets, packet movement, and node connectivity while allowing the viewer to interact with the scene.

There are several graph layout algorithms available to automatically display a computer network. This study applies seven existing layout algorithms to a computer network and compares their readability, complexity, and speed. These algorithms generate network diagrams that are difficult to quickly interpret. To address this issue two improved layout algorithms called the XY Control algorithm and Voting algorithm were developed. The XY algorithm is a new type of force-directed model with an improved gridlike appearance relative to other force-directed algorithms. The Voting algorithm is a directed hierarchal layout technique that provides better space utilization while minimizing edge crossings. Both new algorithms are comparable in speed to the existing algorithms.

This paper presents a discussion of analytical and simulation models of locally distributed computer networks that makes use of ring or bus technology. The section of the paper devoted to ring architectures focuses on models of the Pierce, Newhall, and DLCN rings. The emphasis in the bus section of the paper is on the modeling of access protocols. In this survey paper, we give a general overview of packet communication techniques applied to computer networks. Then we discuss the concept of packet broadcasting and give a short discription of the ALOHANET. Next, a discussion of the application of ALOHA techniques to satellite communications is presented. Women are dramatically underrepresented in computer science at all levels in academia and account for just 15% of tenure-track faculty. Understanding the causes of this gender imbalance would inform both policies intended to rectify it and employment decisions by departments and individuals. Progress in this direction, however, is complicated by the complexity and decentralized nature of faculty hiring and the non-independence of hires. Using comprehensive data on both hiring outcomes and scholarly productivity for 2659 tenure-track faculty across 205 Ph.D.-granting departments in North America, we investigate the multi-dimensional nature of gender inequality in computer science faculty hiring through a network model of the hiring process. Overall, we find that hiring outcomes are most directly affected by (i) the relative prestige between hiring and placing institutions and (ii) the scholarly productivity of the candidates. After including these, and other features, the addition of gender did not significantly reduce modeling error. However, gender differences do exist, e.g., in scholarly productivity, postdoctoral training rates, and in career movements up the rankings of universities, suggesting that the effects of gender are indirectly incorporated into hiring decisions through gender's covariates. Furthermore, we find evidence that more highly ranked departments recruit female faculty at higher than expected rates, which appears to inhibit similar efforts by lower ranked departments. These findings illustrate the subtle nature of gender inequality in faculty hiring networks and provide new insights to the underrepresentation of women in computer science.

Where other educational technologies like television, the VCR and the stand-alone computer have failed to have much of an impact in public schools, local school networks and the Internet have been succeeding. As of 1997, 89% of America's high schools were connected to a computer network. This paper presents a view of network technology from the perspective of teachers at TechCity High School. Despite massive technical difficulties, little training, and minimal recognition, these teachers are finding new ways to use computer networks in labs and in their classrooms. The teachers are finding that computer networks, compared to older technologies, are versatile and easy to use. Results of this multifaceted, ethnographic study document the impact that school computer networks and Internet access are having on teachers' professional environments and on their teaching methods. We hypothesize that sub-network-wide bandwidth reservation and guaranteed CPU processing power at endpoint systems for handling data traffic are indispensable to achieving hard end-to-end quality of service. Different bandwidth reservation strategies, traffic characterization schemes, and scheduling algorithms affect the network resources and CPU usage as well as the extent that QoS can be achieved. In order to analyze those factors, we design and implement a communication layer. Our experimental analysis supports our research hypothesis. The Resource ReSerVation Protocol (RSVP) is designed to realize resource reservation. Our analysis of RSVP shows that using RSVP solely is insufficient to provide hard end-to-end quality of service in a high-speed sub-network. Analysis of the IEEE 802.lp protocol also supports the research hypothesis.

In spite of the fact that wireless network technology has been available for long period of time, there has been very limited wireless networks deployments around the world before 1997 due to the lack of widely recognized standard for wireless networks. Thanks to the approval of the IEEE 802.11 family of standards in 1997, the world has witnessed tremendous deployment and proliferation of wireless networks in all aspects of life. Although the IEEE 802.11 family of standards has been ratified to design radio transceivers for wireless computer stations capable of interconnecting with other wireless computer stations in close proximity, the technology has been successfully employed to design and implement wireless networks with great number of distant wireless computer stations with reasonable data throughput and flexibility. This thesis explores the wireless network technology and the primary building blocks and components of a wireless network. It also explores the IEEE 802.11 standard and its technical specifications including the Physical layer (PHY), the Media Access Control layer (MAC) and the ongoing task forces. Additionally, the thesis examines the wireless network security including the vulnerabilities, ongoing improvements and recommendations. Next, it investigates the market for available wireless devices compatible with the IEEE 802.11 standard that can be used to build a wireless network with high data throughput and high level of security. Subsequently, the thesis formulates a design plan for civilian wireless network with different scenarios in order to provide a speedy solution to the limited broadband service availability in the Sultanate of Oman. Additionally, the thesis formulates a generic design plan for a military wireless network with different scenarios that can be rapidly deployed in the field of operations.

Computer networks are being used in many varied applications. Chapter I of this thesis will look at network topologies, components, and design goals. The remaining three chapters are dedicated to a case study of the Naval Postgraduate School (NPS) computer system. Computer system performance measuring tools for terminal oriented systems are discussed and one is selected for the study. The NPS system is analyzed, shortcomings identified and possible solutions suggested. Finally, two network designs are proposed for a terminal orien­ted system that is suitable for satisfying the needs of the NPS.
