1DTIC ADA417477: Command, Control, Communications, Computer, Intelligence, Surveillance And Reconnaissance (C4ISR) Modeling And Simulation Using Joint Semi-Automated Forces (JSAF)

By

The objective for this effort was to establish a flexible C4ISR modeling and simulation framework based on the Joint Semi-Automated Forces (JSAF) software. This framework is to support cooperation and collaboration with Modeling and Simulation (M&S) efforts throughout AFRL. This effort involved the installation, maintenance, operation, training and interfacing of the JSAF simulation. This effort resulted in the installation of several versions of JSAF including supporting operating systems and MARCI; a tool to control multiple copies of JSAF or other federates from a single workstation. This effort investigated conflicts associated with installing and operating Soar intelligent agents within JSAF. Various Compact Terrain Database's (CTDB) were obtained and configured for JSAF. Demonstration scenarios were developed to analyze its capabilities along with a small Serbia-based scenario to support the JBI program. Other C4ISR systems and tools were investigated for inclusion within the framework. A model abstraction experiment was designed using the ALARM radar model in order to compare behaviors against those found in a comparable JSAF radar model. Attempts were made to integrate JSAF with a JView/Java-based visualization application via an HLA backbone. Many lessons learned resolved from this effort with respect to integration, collaboration and operation of systems and C4ISR frameworks.

2DTIC ADA368587: CoHOST (Computer Modeling Of Human Operator System Tasks) Computer Simulation Models To Investigate Human Performance Task And Workload Conditions In A U.S. Army Heavy Maneuver Battalion Tactical Operations Center

By

A multi-year effort was conducted to investigate the impact on human cognitive and physical performance capabilities resulting from the introduction of a new Army command and control vehicle with modernized digital communications systems. This was a joint effort by the U.S. Army Research Laboratory in partnership with the Directorate of Force Developments at the U.S. Armor Center and School at Fort Knox, Kentucky, and the U.S. Army Operational Test and Evaluation Command at Alexandria, Virginia. Literature searches and background investigations were conducted, and a model architecture based on a taxonomy of human performance was developed. A computer simulation design and methodology was implemented with these taxonomic based descriptors of human performance in the military command and control domain, using a commercially available simulation programming language. A series of computer models was written and results were developed that suggest that automation alone does not necessarily improve human performance.

3DTIC ADA301862: Modeling And Computer Simulation Of The Dynamic Response And Failure Of Composite Structures Subjected To Shock Loading.

By

The present thesis addresses the numerical modeling and analysis of the dynamic behavior and failure of composite structures subjected to either underwater shock or impact loading. A general purpose computer code was developed and tested for use on personal computers using both the finite element and boundary element techniques. The code can analyze general three-dimensional solid and shell structures. A wide variety of static and dynamic problems with known solutions are demonstrated to verify the accuracy of the code. This code is then used to model and analyze the dynamic response and failure of an unbalanced sandwich composite structure subjected to impact loading. Finally, the effects of composite layer smearing on the fluid-structure interaction are examined. (MM)

4DTIC ADA225387: The Computer Simulation And Modeling Of A Flexible Missile In 2-D Motion

By

The development and computer simulation is presented for a bending flexible missile with a rigid-body controller system moving in a 2-D coordinate frame. In this thesis, the dynamic model was developed through the Equivalent Rigid Link System (ERLS) using Lagrangian dynamics to obtain a type of system equations of motion suited for the sequential integration method that integrates large motion explicitly and small motion implicitly. The spatial finite element discretization of missile structure and the application of truncated natural modal responses provide an approximate solution. The analysis and simulation were performed to understand the dynamic behavior of a flexible missile using a rigid-body controller. The payload will affect the natural frequency of the missile structure i.e, when the payload is increased, the system fundamental frequency will be decreased. The payload must then be limited to achieve high- speed response. In order to increase the payload and maintain high-speed control response, a flexible-body controller is needed. Keywords: Pitch angle control; Attitude control systems; Two dimensional control systems; Theses.

5Linking Combat Systems Capabilities And Ship Design Through Modeling And Computer Simulation

By

When designing combat vessels, the traditional approach has been to configure weapons and other operational systems around the hull. Such thinking may have been rooted in the idea that hull design is the highest priority, since it can translate into a speedier and more seaworthy vessel, thereby allowing the vessel to reach its destination and complete its mission on a timelier basis. The traditional approach, however, has its shortcomings; once the ship is built, modifications to meet changing operational requirements can be costly and difficult to implement. Ship designers have long sought a methodology to identify such shortcomings by linking mission requirements with naval requirements in the early stages of ship design. The ongoing challenge has been to devise a synthesizing and modeling tool that enables designers to assess the trade-offs that may occur as design modifications are proposed. The Naval Postgraduate School has taken on this challenge through its design concept using Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE). This thesis considers how MBSE might extend its use of simulation and modeling to better link architectural ship designs to combat system requirements. This thesis considers such linking and identifies a synthesizing tool that may facilitate the synthesizing and modeling process.

7DTIC ADA378989: Computer Modeling And Simulation Of Bullet Impact To The Human Thorax

By

The biomechanical response of a finite element model of the human thorax and a protective body armor system was studied under impact loading from a projectile. The objective of the study was to create a viable finite element model of the human thorax. The model was validated by comparing the results of tests of body armor systems conducted on cadavers to results obtained from finite element analysis. A parametric study was undertaken to determine the essential components of the model. The results from this investigation determined that the path of force propagation from a body armor system to the thorax upon bullet impact is directly through the vest to the sternum and then through the skeleton to the rest of the body. Thus, any parameters that affect the components in this pathway were essential to the model. This included the muscles, their geometries, material properties, and viscosity, as well as the Young's modulus of the sternochondral cartilage and the bones themselves.

10DTIC ADA429085: Some Topics In Computer Assisted Modeling, Simulation, And Data Analysis

By

The supported graduate student, John Dobelman has begun extensive work on his disseration to find stochastic models to explain the mechanisms whereby electricity prices spike. Three books and six papers were authored or co-authored by Thompson during this grant period. The common thread is the development of models supported by intensive computer simulation to help explain and understand real world processes. Among these investigations are included models for statistical process control in situations new to SPC. Almost all SPC treatises deal with situations in which the paradigm is of mature usage. Thompson shows how difficult such implementations are to achieve in practice and gives means for jumpstarting SPC in such systems as the International Space Station. The first world AIDS epidemic has received substantial attention by Thompson. Most recently he has given a model based argument that there is no standalone AIDS epidemic in Europe: it only exists by contacts with American infectives. In stochastic process based economic modeling, Thompson and his co-authors have shown how effective simulation models of relative simplicity and parametric parsimony may be achieved by aggregation from the micro to the macro. The simugram is Thompson's discovery that we can forecast the future multivariate stochastic process of even a large portfolio by the use of simulation. The risk neutral formula of Black-Scholes-Merton is shown to be seriously deficient as a practical tool. Similarly, the artificiality of the portfolio paradigm of Markowitz is replaced by other, conceptually simple, but requiring extensive computer simulation, techniques. Work is done which shows how data analysis in high dimensions needs to be carried out with techniques very different from those used in low dimensions.

11ERIC ED082502: Modeling And Computer Simulation Of Dynamic Societal, Scientific, And Engineering Systems.

By

A course in modeling and computer simulation of dynamic systems uses three methods to introduce students to these topics. Core studies, the consideration of the theoretical fundamentals of modeling and simulation, and the execution by students of a project are employed. Taught in the Electrical Engineering Department at Michigan Technological University, the course is broadly based with regard to both subject matter and simulation methods, and students are free to select a project in any area and to use the computer and language of their choice. Societal, scientific, and engineering models are studied, and digital, analog, and hybrid computer simulations are considered. The course is intended to increase the students' awareness of the possibilities of quantizing problems associated with dynamic systems and to inform them of the potentials of computer simulation. Design, rather than analysis, is emphasized and student projects aim at utilizing computer simulations to determine control strategies. Evaluation to date indicates that the course is both successful and popular, but also that students require additional training in generating project problems and in writing technical proposals. This thesis considers how MBSE might extend its use of simulation and modeling to better link architectural ship designs to combat system requirements. This thesis considers such linking and identifies a synthesizing tool that may facilitate the synthesizing and modeling process.

16The Computer Simulation And Modeling Of A Flexible Missile In 2-D Motion.

18Micro-computer Modeling And Simulation Of Conformal Acoustic Array Performance Array Element Degradation Effects

By

A far-field beam pattern or directivity function of a conformal acoustic array can be generated by performing a three dimensional spatial discrete Fourier transform of the array’s aperture function. The beam pattern is a function of frequency, and both spherical angles of direction. It is strongly dependent on the aperture window, on the applied time delays, and the geometrical configuration of the array. A user-friendly micro-computer software program was created to study the actual array design and the degraded array. The program generates tabular and graphical data in a short period of time (3 min.) for a given frequency, bearing angle (MRA), speed of sound and configuration. Finally, this thesis shows that the degradation of even a few elements seriously influences the sensitivity and the shape of the beam pattern, and the users must draw conclusion on an individual basis.

By

The Atmosphere Revitalization Recovery and Environmental Monitoring (ARREM) project was initiated in September of 2011 as part of the Advanced Exploration Systems (AES) program. Under the ARREM project and the follow-on Life Support Systems (LSS) project, testing of sub-scale and full-scale systems has been combined with multiphysics computer simulations for evaluation and optimization of subsystem approaches. In particular, this paper will describes the testing and 1-D modeling of the combined water desiccant and carbon dioxide sorbent subsystems of the carbon dioxide removal assembly (CDRA). The goal is a full system predictive model of CDRA to guide system optimization and development.

24TACTICAL UNMANNED AERIAL SYSTEM CAPABILITIES IMPACT ANALYSIS IN SUPPORT OF THE EXPEDITIONARY MARINE AIR GROUND TASK FORCE USING COMPUTER MODELING AND SIMULATION

By

The Marine Corps of the future is one that will increasingly rely on unmanned aerial systems (UASs) integrating directly with Marines’ fire and maneuver. As UAS technology evolves, so, too, should the Marine Corps’ understanding and utilization of this technology in an increasingly complex operation environment evolve. The most powerful measure of effectiveness for the operational contributions of UASs is in Marine lives that the UAS helps to preserve. This research uses design of experiment principles and computer modeling to simulate a Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU) conducting an amphibious assault against a peer-level adversary. Through a series of increasingly refined and focused experiments, a wide variety and range of UAS capabilities are explored to determine their impact on the Marines of that MEU. UAS capabilities explored include speed, stealth, air-to-ground missiles, ground support capability, and more. Through this analysis, sensor range and the number of UASs employed simultaneously are determined to be the most important UAS attributes in saving Marine lives. These factors are found to be more significant than armament, airspeed, stealth, or rate of detection.

30NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS) 19890004523: Utility Of Emulation And Simulation Computer Modeling Of Space Station Environmental Control And Life Support Systems

By

Over the years, computer modeling has been used extensively in many disciplines to solve engineering problems. A set of computer program tools is proposed to assist the engineer in the various phases of the Space Station program from technology selection through flight operations. The development and application of emulation and simulation transient performance modeling tools for life support systems are examined. The results of the development and the demonstration of the utility of three computer models are presented. The first model is a detailed computer model (emulation) of a solid amine water desorbed (SAWD) CO2 removal subsystem combined with much less detailed models (simulations) of a cabin, crew, and heat exchangers. This model was used in parallel with the hardware design and test of this CO2 removal subsystem. The second model is a simulation of an air revitalization system combined with a wastewater processing system to demonstrate the capabilities to study subsystem integration. The third model is that of a Space Station total air revitalization system. The station configuration consists of a habitat module, a lab module, two crews, and four connecting nodes.

33Computer Modeling And Simulation To Predict COVID-19 Propagation Patterns Via Factual Cellular Automata

By

Computer modelling and simulation methods are very important and play a critical role in the mitigation and response to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. In this study, we propose a computational modeling technique based on cellular automata (CA) with realistic proposed rules. The rules are designed to simulate the propagation of COVID-19 disease through a bounded area. Our proposed CA rules are novel in many respects. For example, we introduce rules regarding surface states not only the states of the person rules to the proposed model. In addition on, the classification of neighbors to nearest neighbors and range of neighbors based on cellular layers is explained. Moreover, the concepts of time generation and access time are deployed for the first time to model the propagation of the disease over time in this work. Further details of the proposed model including the topology of the defined area, the initial states of the cells and four-layer transfer mechanism are explained as well. This work may be considered a criterion of spreading for COVID-19 from point source in a defined population area. The results of the proposed algorithm represent the percentage of the population whose infectious status is described by different cellular state objects after a defined generation time. The results are compared under different circumstances and analyzed equanimity.

39The Computer Simulation And Modeling Of A Flexible Missile In 2-D Motion.

42DTIC ADA444437: Advanced Mini Array Antenna Design Using High Fidelity Computer Modeling And Simulation

By

NAVSYS has developed a miniaturized GPS antenna array technology that reduces the size of the antenna elements and the array dimensions. This is an enabling technology, which allows GPS controlled reception pattern antenna arrays (CRPA) with anti-jamming capability to be installed on vehicles where their size has previously prohibited their use. This includes aircraft where size and weight constraints resulted in fixed reception pattern antenna (FRPA) installations instead of CRPAs and in munitions applications where space and surface area are at a premium. NAVSYS has developed a six-inch L1 four element phased array antenna. However, there is still a need for even smaller mini-array antenna with more elements and both L1/L2 capability. NAVSYS and SPAWAR have teamed to use the NAVSYS antenna design and the Department of Defense s supercomputer power along with Electromagnetic Interactions GEneRalized (EIGER) code which is an advanced Method of Moment/Hybrid Finite Element Method to model the antenna and compare the results to test data. This paper will present the results of the modeling data versus test data and the results of a potential design modification.

47Application Of Computer Modeling And Simulation Techniques For Optimization Of Factory Floor Operations In Small To Medium-sized Businesses

By

The rationale and motive for this thesis was to prove that no matter the size of a company and its particular value stream, the application of applied computer science principles with a reliance on computer modeling and simulation onto the factory floor process improves efficiencies and throughput through the reduction of downtime and/or process waiting. This thesis research specifically emphasized small businesses of between $2 and $20 million and was purposely limited to factory floor production processes and utilized standardized applied computer science techniques including simulation and modeling, microprocessor based factory floor intelligence devices. The results of this applied technology yields data driven decisions through established production management programs such as Six Sigma and Lean techniques. The resulting research shows that methodologies developed here can be used in market segments that can’t now afford to implement these efficiency programs and as such, the application of the proposals brought forth in this thesis should precipitate an increase in US Small Business manufacturing efficiencies.
