1NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS) 19890015267: Computational Methods For Structural Mechanics And Dynamics, Part 1
By NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS)
The structural analysis methods research has several goals. One goal is to develop analysis methods that are general. This goal of generality leads naturally to finite-element methods, but the research will also include other structural analysis methods. Another goal is that the methods be amenable to error analysis; that is, given a physical problem and a mathematical model of that problem, an analyst would like to know the probable error in predicting a given response quantity. The ultimate objective is to specify the error tolerances and to use automated logic to adjust the mathematical model or solution strategy to obtain that accuracy. A third goal is to develop structural analysis methods that can exploit parallel processing computers. The structural analysis methods research will focus initially on three types of problems: local/global nonlinear stress analysis, nonlinear transient dynamics, and tire modeling.

7DTIC ADA174585: Computational Methods For Nonlinear Dynamics Problems In Solid And Structural Mechanics: Models Of Dynamic Frictional Phenomena In Metallic Structures.
By Defense Technical Information Center
In this report the dynamic behavior of metallic bodies subjected to dry frictional contacts is studied. A simple model of interface response which incorporates a constitutive equation for the normal deformability of the interface and the Coulomb law of friction is developed. This interface model is incorporated in the formulation of problems in continuum mechanics that invlove the contact of linearly elastic or viscoelastic bodies. Variational formulations for these problems are established and existence and uniqueness results are proved for steady-sliding and dynamic frictionless or frictional contact problems. The same interface model is also incorporated in finite dimensional models for contact problems: a simple rigid body model and finite element space discretizations of the continuum models. Numerical studies steady sliding and its dynamic stability are presented, as well as numerical studies of friction-induced oscillations. In the latter case, the Newmark method and the central-difference technique are used to integrate numerically the equations of motion. In the numerical studies particular emphasis is given to the role played by normal degree-of-freedom in frictional sliding.

8NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS) 19890020413: The FORCE: A Portable Parallel Programming Language Supporting Computational Structural Mechanics
By NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS)
This project supports the conversion of codes in Computational Structural Mechanics (CSM) to a parallel form which will efficiently exploit the computational power available from multiprocessors. The work is a part of a comprehensive, FORTRAN-based system to form a basis for a parallel version of the NICE/SPAR combination which will form the CSM Testbed. The software is macro-based and rests on the force methodology developed by the principal investigator in connection with an early scientific multiprocessor. Machine independence is an important characteristic of the system so that retargeting it to the Flex/32, or any other multiprocessor on which NICE/SPAR might be imnplemented, is well supported. The principal investigator has experience in producing parallel software for both full and sparse systems of linear equations using the force macros. Other researchers have used the Force in finite element programs. It has been possible to rapidly develop software which performs at maximum efficiency on a multiprocessor. The inherent machine independence of the system also means that the parallelization will not be limited to a specific multiprocessor.

10NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS) 19890020412: Parallel Algorithms And Archtectures For Computational Structural Mechanics
By NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS)
The determination of the fundamental (lowest) natural vibration frequencies and associated mode shapes is a key step used to uncover and correct potential failures or problem areas in most complex structures. However, the computation time taken by finite element codes to evaluate these natural frequencies is significant, often the most computationally intensive part of structural analysis calculations. There is continuing need to reduce this computation time. This study addresses this need by developing methods for parallel computation.

12NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS) 19870018624: Introduction To The Computational Structural Mechanics Testbed
By NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS)
The Computational Structural Mechanics (CSM) testbed software system based on the SPAR finite element code and the NICE system is described. This software is denoted NICE/SPAR. NICE was developed at Lockheed Palo Alto Research Laboratory and contains data management utilities, a command language interpreter, and a command language definition for integrating engineering computational modules. SPAR is a system of programs used for finite element structural analysis developed for NASA by Lockheed and Engineering Information Systems, Inc. It includes many complementary structural analysis, thermal analysis, utility functions which communicate through a common database. The work on NICE/SPAR was motivated by requirements for a highly modular and flexible structural analysis system to use as a tool in carrying out research in computational methods and exploring computer hardware. Analysis examples are presented which demonstrate the benefits gained from a combination of the NICE command language with a SPAR computational modules.

16NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS) 19870017992: Parallel Software Support For Computational Structural Mechanics
By NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS)
The application of the parallel programming methodology known as the Force was conducted. Two application issues were addressed. The first involves the efficiency of the implementation and its completeness in terms of satisfying the needs of other researchers implementing parallel algorithms. Support for, and interaction with, other Computational Structural Mechanics (CSM) researchers using the Force was the main issue, but some independent investigation of the Barrier construct, which is extremely important to overall performance, was also undertaken. Another efficiency issue which was addressed was that of relaxing the strong synchronization condition imposed on the self-scheduled parallel DO loop. The Force was extended by the addition of logical conditions to the cases of a parallel case construct and by the inclusion of a self-scheduled version of this construct. The second issue involved applying the Force to the parallelization of finite element codes such as those found in the NICE/SPAR testbed system. One of the more difficult problems encountered is the determination of what information in COMMON blocks is actually used outside of a subroutine and when a subroutine uses a COMMON block merely as scratch storage for internal temporary results.

24DTIC ADA208763: Computational Methods For Nonlinear Dynamic Problems In Solid And Structural Mechanics: Progress In The Theory And Modeling Of Friction And In The Control Of Dynamical Systems With Frictional Forces
By Defense Technical Information Center
This final report summarizes work on a three-year project devoted to dynamic friction and on control of systems with frictional forces. Detailed theoretical and numerical studies of static and dynamic friction and various phenomena of dynamic friction (stick-slip motion, self-excited oscillations, frictional damping, etc.) are described. Included in the report is also a study of methods of statistical homogenization, devised to develop new micromechanics-based models of contact and friction. The question of optimal control with distributed dynamical systems of viscoelastic bodies with frictional forces is also described. A final component of this study focuses on the mathematical and numerical analysis of elastohydrodynamic lubrication problems and is included in the final chapter. The studies presented in this report provide both a theoretical and numerical basis for modeling contact and friction. These models are shown to produce results in very good qualitative and quantitative agreement with experimental results. Keywords: Friction, Damping, Structural dynamics, Elastohydrodynamic lubrication.

26NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS) 19890020403: Overview Of The NASA Program In Computational Structural Mechanics
By NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS)
In order to meet the anticipated needs in modeling and analysis of advanced aerospace structures, NASA has developed a program focused on computational structural mechanics. The objective of this program is to advance the state-of-the-art in computational analysis to make accurate analysis of very large and complex structural problems routine. This will be accomplished by emphasizing two key areas: (1) the development of advanced analytical methods, extending beyond traditional approaches and, (2) the exploitation of the newest and most powerful parallel/multiprocessor computers available. Computational testbeds will be developed to serve as technology integrators and to promote/accelerate methodology research and development. An additional, and highly desirable, effect of the Computational Structural Mechanics (CSM) program would be to influence the design of future hardware and software systems to reflect the needs of structural analysis.

By NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS)
The computational structural mechanics (CSM) program at Lewis encompasses: (1) fundamental aspects for formulating and solving structural mechanics problems, and (2) development of integrated software systems to computationally simulate the performance/durability/life of engine structures. It is structured to mainly supplement, complement, and whenever possible replace, costly experimental efforts which are unavoidable during engineering research and development programs. Specific objectives include: investigate unique advantages of parallel and multiprocesses for: reformulating/solving structural mechanics and formulating/solving multidisciplinary mechanics and develop integrated structural system computational simulators for: predicting structural performances, evaluating newly developed methods, and for identifying and prioritizing improved/missing methods needed. Herein the CSM program is summarized with emphasis on the Engine Structures Computational Simulator (ESCS). Typical results obtained using ESCS are described to illustrate its versatility.

30NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS) 19900012094: The Computational Structural Mechanics Testbed Generic Structural-element Processor Manual
By NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS)
The usage and development of structural finite element processors based on the CSM Testbed's Generic Element Processor (GEP) template is documented. By convention, such processors have names of the form ESi, where i is an integer. This manual is therefore intended for both Testbed users who wish to invoke ES processors during the course of a structural analysis, and Testbed developers who wish to construct new element processors (or modify existing ones).
