The aim of this review paper is to give a panoramic of the impact of spin glass theory and statistical physics in the study of the K-sat problem. The introduction of spin glass theory in the study of the random K-sat problem has indeed left a mark on the field, leading to some groundbreaking descriptions of the geometry of its solution space, and helping to shed light on why it seems to be so hard to solve. Most of the geometrical intuitions have their roots in the Sherrington-Kirkpatrick model of spin glass. We'll start Chapter 2 by introducing the model from a mathematical perspective, presenting a selection of rigorous results and giving a first intuition about the cavity method. We'll then switch to a physical perspective, to explore concepts like pure states, hierarchical clustering and replica symmetry breaking. Chapter 3 will be devoted to the spin glass formulation of K-sat, while the most important phase transitions of K-sat (clustering, condensation, freezing and SAT/UNSAT) will be extensively discussed in Chapter 4, with respect their complexity, free-entropy density and the Parisi 1RSB parameter. The concept of algorithmic barrier will be presented in Chapter 5 and exemplified in detail on the Belief Propagation (BP) algorithm. The BP algorithm will be introduced and motivated, and numerical analysis of a BP-guided decimation algorithm will be used to show the role of the clustering, condensation and freezing phase transitions in creating an algorithmic barrier for BP. Taking from the failure of BP in the clustered and condensed phases, Chapter 6 will finally introduce the Cavity Method to deal with the shattering of the solution space, and present its application to the development of the Survey Propagation algorithm.

A new project is in progress to study the application of new design concepts and software techniques in Geant4 electromagnetic physics, and to evaluate how they can improve on the current simulation capabilities. The application of a policy-based class design is investigated as a means to achieve the objective of granular decomposition of processes; this design technique offers various advantages in terms of flexibility of configuration and computational performance. The current Geant4 physics models have been re-implemented according to the new design as a pilot project. The main features of the new design and first results of performance improvement and testing simplification are presented; they are relevant to many Geant4 applications, where computational speed and the containment of resources invested in simulation production and quality assurance play a critical role.

The present investigation is a continuation of a previous joint project between the Florida State University and the NASA Langley Research Center Liner Physics Team. In the previous project, a study of acoustic liners, in two dimensions, inside a normal incidence impedance tube was carried out. The study consisted of two parts. The NASA team was responsible for the experimental part of the project. This involved performing measurements in an impedance tube with a large aspect ratio slit resonator. The FSU team was responsible for the computation part of the project. This involved performing direct numerical simulation (DNS) of the NASA experiment in two dimensions using CAA methodology. It was agreed that upon completion of numerical simulation, the computed values of the liner impedance were to be sent to NASA for validation with experimental results. On following this procedure good agreements were found between numerical results and experimental measurements over a wide range of frequencies and sound-pressure-level. Broadband incident sound waves were also simulated numerically and measured experimentally. Overall, good agreements were also found.

A physics-based algorithm is developed based on the multi-fluid plasma model derived from moments of the Boltzmann equation. The model includes evolution equations for the electromagnetic fluids, electron fluid, ion fluid, neutral fluid, and any additional species. The large mass difference between electrons and ions introduces disparate time and spatial scales and requires a numerical algorithm with sufficient accuracy to capture the multiple scales. In addition, the characteristic time scales for the electromagnetic fields is much shorter than the time scales of the ion and neutral fluids. The physics-based computational algorithm solves fluid models for each plasma species that are appropriate for the expected physical behavior, by combining 5N-moment and 13N-moment fluid models for multicomponent plasmas. The numerical discretization is developed specifically to capture the expected physical behavior by combining high-order continuous and discontinuous spatial representations of the solution and implicit time-advance methods to accurately capture the fast and slow dynamics. The physics-based computational algorithm has also been extended to solving continuum kinetic plasma models. Solving Maxwell's equations has been improved by using a parabolic modification to ensure the errors of divergence constraint equations are properly removed and handled. Nonreflecting boundary conditions using a lacunae-based method have been implemented and provide higher solution fidelity for open boundary problems.

The primary objective of the proposed research was to gain a fundamental understanding of strategies, mechanisms, and scaling laws for successful control of separation using zern-net mass-flux (ZNMF) actuators. The key issue that was systematically studied was the optimal excitation frequencies in separated flows characterized by convective and/or global instabilities. The study was a complementary experimental/ numerical effort that capitalized on previous collaborations and was aimed at leveraging the respective strengths df CFD and experiments. The numerical component employed two different solvers will allowed us to investigate chord Reynolds numbers Re(c) up to O(10%). The complementary experiments use a large flat plate model equipped with a two-dimensional ZNMF actuator slot. Both the experiments and computations employed nonlinear spectral analysis to quantify quadratic coupling between the various instability mechanisms in separated flows. Outcomes included fundamental insights int0 the non-linear dynamics of separated airfoil flows and their implications for ZNMF separation control as well as development of improved lumped element design tool for ZNMF actuators in separation control applications.

The major accomplishments of an AFOSR-MURI grant focused on transient processes in hypersonic combined-cycle propulsion are described. This effort had two main thrusts: investigation of (1) inlet-isolator physics and unstart control, and (2) supersonic mixing, combustion and flameholding. The supported work led to new findings related to the physics of shock-induced turbulent separation and inlet unstart, closed loop control of inlet unstart, development of kilohertz repetition rate plasma actuators, understanding of non-equilibrium plasma enhancement of combustion in subsonic and supersonic flameholders, development of the large-eddy simulation technique for compressible jets-in-crossflow, and development of new tunable diode-laser diagnostics for supersonic combustors. The scientific results obtained from this MURI program were disseminated widely to the scientific community via archival journal publications and technical conferences. The MURI effort led to 28 submitted or published papers in archival journals and 8 Ph.D. dissertations.

This paper presents viewgraphs on computational physics for space flight applications. The topics include: 1) Introduction to space radiation effects in microelectronics; 2) Using applied physics to help NASA meet mission objectives; 3) Example of applied computational physics; and 4) Future directions in applied computational physics.

In this paper, we review some features of quantum annealing and related topics from viewpoints of statistical physics, condensed matter physics, and computational physics. We can obtain a better solution of optimization problems in many cases by using the quantum annealing. Actually the efficiency of the quantum annealing has been demonstrated for problems based on statistical physics. Then the quantum annealing has been expected to be an efficient and generic solver of optimization problems. Since many implementation methods of the quantum annealing have been developed and will be proposed in the future, theoretical frameworks of wide area of science and experimental technologies will be evolved through studies of the quantum annealing.

This final report summarizes the activities and results from computational electro-energetic plasma physics research during the contract period. The report summarizes meetings and Help Desk enhancements for the education of the AFOSR MAGIC users performing plasma physics research. MAGIC code system improvements including physics models, user interface upgrades, and execution efficiency made in response to the users' needs are reported. Several open literature and seminar presentations (separately attached documents) present specific plasma research collaborations with the researchers that we have published during the performance period. They record new approaches and techniques developed and deployed in the software and methodologies. Also attached is a copy of the electronic Magic User's Manual. This document covers the basic concepts of finite difference time domain particle-in-cell (FDTD-PIC) modeling, provides an introduction to the concepts necessary for application to a broad range of plasma physics calculations and vacuum circuit design, and describes in detail for the user all of the code improvements.

This effort had two main thrusts: investigation of (i) inlet-isolator physics and unstart control, and (ii) supersonic mixing, combustion and flameholding. The supported work has led to new findings related to the physics of shock-induced turbulent separation and inlet unstart, closed-loop control of inlet unstart, development of kilohertz repetition rate plasma-actuators, understanding of nonequilibrium plasma enhancement of combustion in subsonic and supersonic flameholders, development of the large-eddy simulation technique for compressible jets-in-crossflow, and development of new tunable diode-laser diagnostics for supersonic combustors. The scientific results obtained from this MURI program were widely disseminated to the scientific community via archival journal publications and technical conferences. The MURI effort led to 28 submitted or published papers in archival journals and 8 Ph.D. dissertations.
