We give a simple and elementary proof of the identity $$\sum_{r=1}^n\sum_{k_1,...,k_r\ge 1: \sum_{i=1}^r k_i= n} \frac {n!} {k_1!k_2!...k_r!}k_1^{k_2}...k_{r-1}^{k_r}=(n+1)^{n-1}$$ where $n\in \mathbb N$. A first application of this formula shows Cayley's theorem \cite{Caley} on the number of trees with $n+1$ vertices (in fact the formula is equivalent to Cayley's result). A second application gives the distribution of avalanche sizes, which can be deduced for general dynamical systems and also as a bilogically motivated urn model in probability. In particular, the law of avalanche sizes in Eurich et al. \cite{EHE} and Levina \cite{Levina} is closely related to this dynamical representation.

We define Bernstein-Gelfand-Ponomarev reflection functors in the cluster categories of hereditary algebras. They are triangle equivalences which provide a natural quiver realization of the "truncated simple reflections" on the set of almost positive roots $\Phi_{\ge -1}$ associated to a finite dimensional semisimple Lie algebra. Combining with the tilting theory in cluster categories developed in [4], we give a unified interpretation via quiver representations for the generalized associahedra associated to the root systems of all Dynkin types (a simply-laced or non-simply-laced). This confirms the conjecture 9.1 in [4] in all Dynkin types.

This paper studies two related subjects. One is some combinatorics arising from linear projections of polytopes and fans of cones. The other is quotient varieties of toric varieties. The relation is that projections of polytopes are related to quotients of projective toric varieties and projection of fans are related to quotients of general toric varieties. Despite its relation to geometry the first part is purely combinatorial and should be of interest in its own right.

Statistical physics models with hard constraints, such as the discrete hard-core gas model (random independent sets in a graph), are inherently combinatorial and present the discrete mathematician with a relatively comfortable setting for the study of phase transition. In this paper we survey recent work (concentrating on joint work of the authors) in which hard-constraint systems are modeled by the space $\hom(G,H)$ of homomorphisms from an infinite graph $G$ to a fixed finite constraint graph $H$. These spaces become sufficiently tractable when $G$ is a regular tree (often called a Cayley tree or Bethe lattice) to permit characterization of the constraint graphs $H$ which admit multiple invariant Gibbs measures. Applications to a physics problem (multiple critical points for symmetry-breaking) and a combinatorics problem (random coloring), as well as some new combinatorial notions, will be presented.

We consider combinatorial aspects of $\lambda$-terms in the model based on de Bruijn indices where each building constructor is of size one. Surprisingly, the counting sequence for $\lambda$-terms corresponds also to two families of binary trees, namely black-white trees and zigzag-free ones. We provide a constructive proof of this fact by exhibiting appropriate bijections. Moreover, we identify the sequence of Motzkin numbers with the counting sequence for neutral $\lambda$-terms, giving a bijection which, in consequence, results in an exact-size sampler for the latter based on the exact-size sampler for Motzkin trees of Bodini et alli. Using the powerful theory of analytic combinatorics, we state several results concerning the asymptotic growth rate of $\lambda$-terms in neutral, normal, and head normal forms. Finally, we investigate the asymptotic density of $\lambda$-terms containing arbitrary fixed subterms showing that, inter alia, strongly normalising or typeable terms are asymptotically negligible in the set of all $\lambda$-terms.

A decomposition space (also called unital 2-Segal space) is a simplicial object satisfying an exactness condition weaker than the Segal condition: just as the Segal condition expresses (up to homotopy) composition, the new condition expresses decomposition. It is a general framework for incidence (co)algebras. In the present contribution, after establishing a formula for the section coefficients, we survey a large supply of examples, emphasising the notion's firm roots in classical combinatorics. The first batch of examples, similar to binomial posets, serves to illustrate two key points: (1) the incidence algebra in question is realised directly from a decomposition space, without a reduction step, and reductions are often given by CULF functors; (2) at the objective level, the convolution algebra is a monoidal structure of species. Specifically, we encounter the usual Cauchy product of species, the shuffle product of L-species, the Dirichlet product of arithmetic species, the Joyal-Street external product of q-species and the Morrison `Cauchy' product of q-species, and in each case a power series representation results from taking cardinality. The external product of q-species exemplifies the fact that Waldhausen's S-construction on an abelian category is a decomposition space, yielding Hall algebras. The next class of examples includes Schmitt's chromatic Hopf algebra, the Fa\`a di Bruno bialgebra, the Butcher-Connes-Kreimer Hopf algebra of trees and several variations from operad theory. Similar structures on posets and directed graphs exemplify a general construction of decomposition spaces from directed restriction species. We finish by computing the M\"obius function in a few cases, and commenting on certain cancellations that occur in the process of taking cardinality, substantiating that these cancellations are not possible at the objective level.

The spaces of coinvariants are quotient spaces of integrable $\hat{sl_2}$ modules by subspaces generated by actions of certain subalgebras labeled by a set of points on a complex line. When all the points are distinct, the spaces of coinvariants essentially coincide with the spaces of conformal blocks in the WZW conformal field theory and their dimensions are given by the Verlinde rule. We describe monomial bases for the $\wsl$ spaces of coinvariants, In particular, we prove that the spaces of coinvariants have the same dimensions when all the points coincide. We establish recursive relations satisfied by the monomial bases and the corresponding characters of the spaces of coinvariants. For the proof we use filtrations of the $\hat{\mathfrak{sl}}_2$ modules, and further filtrations on the adjoint graded spaces for the first filtrations. This paper is the continuation of [FKLMM].

This work studies combinatorics and geometry of the Yoccoz puzzle for quadratic polynomials. It is proven that the moduli of the ``principal nest'' of annuli grow at linear rate. As a corollary we obtain complex a priori bounds and local connectivity of the Julia set for many infinitely renormalizable quadratics.

We continue to investigate various diagonalization properties for sequences of open covers of separable metrizable spaces introduced in Part I. These properties generalize classical ones of Rothberger, Menger, Hurewicz, and Gerlits-Nagy. In particular, we show that most of the properties introduced in Part I are indeed distinct. We characterize two of the new properties by showing that they are equivalent to saying all finite powers have one of the classical properties above (Hurewicz property in one case and in the Menger property in other). We consider for each property the smallest cardinality of metric space which fails to have that property. In each case this cardinal turns out to equal another well-known cardinal less than the continuum. We also disprove (in ZFC) a conjecture of Hurewicz which is analogous to the Borel conjecture. Finally, we answer several questions from Part I concerning partition properties of covers.

We give a simple presentation of the combinatorics of renormalization in perturbative quantum field theory in terms of triangular matrices. The prescription, that may be of calculational value, is derived from first principles, to wit, the ``Birkhoff decomposition'' in the Hopf-algebraic description of renormalization by Connes and Kreimer.

The finite XXZ Heisenberg spin chain with twisted boundary conditions was considered. For the case of even number of sites $N$, anisotropy parameter -1/2 and twisting angle $2 \pi /3$ the Hamiltonian of the system possesses an eigenvalue $-3N/2$. The explicit form of the corresponding eigenvector was found for $N \le 12$. Conjecturing that this vector is the ground state of the system we made and verified several conjectures related to the norm of the ground state vector, its component with maximal absolute value and some correlation functions, which have combinatorial nature. In particular, the squared norm of the ground state vector is probably coincides with the number of half-turn symmetric alternating sign $N \times N$ matrices.

We prove a number of results on the structure and enumeration of palindromes and antipalindromes. In particular, we study conjugates of palindromes, palindromic pairs, rich words, and the counterparts of these notions for antipalindromes.

We propose a new description of Endofunctors of Module Categories, based upon a combinatorial category comprising finite sets and so-called mazes. Polynomial and numerical functors both find a natural interpretation in this frame-work. Since strict polynomial functors, according to the work of Salomonsson, are encoded by multi-sets, the two strains of functors may be compared and contrasted through juxtaposing the respective combinatorial structures, leading to the Polynomial Functor Theorem, giving an effective criterion for when a numerical (polynomial) functor is strict polynomial.

For words of length $n$, generated by independent geometric random variables, we consider the mean and variance of the number of inversions and of a parameter of Knuth from permutation in situ. In this way, $q$--analogues for these parameters from the usual permutation model are obtained.

We continue our study of "cominuscule tableau combinatorics" by generalizing constructions of M. Haiman, S. Fomin and M.-P. Sch\"{u}tzenberger. In particular, we extend the "dual equivalence" ideas of [Haiman, 1992] to reformulate the generalized Littlewood-Richardson rule for cominuscule G/P Schubert calculus from [Thomas-Yong, 2006]; this reformulation avoids certain arbitrary choices demanded by the original version. Also, we apply dual equivalence to give an alternative and independent proof of the jeu de taquin results of [Proctor, 2004] needed in our earlier work. Further, we extend Fomin's "growth diagram" description of jeu de taquin; the inherent symmetry of these diagrams leads to a generalization of Sch\"{u}tzenberger's "evacuation involution". We think of these results as characteristic of our viewpoint that the tableau combinatorics making the cohomology of Grassmannians attractive should have natural cominuscule generalizations. This principle incorporates the standard maxim that the Young tableau combinatorics of Schur polynomials should have "shifted analogues" for Schur $P-$ and $Q-$ polynomials (although this is often used with representation theory of the symmetric group, rather than geometry of flag manifolds, in mind).

We study the free (associative, non-commutative) Baxter algebra on one generator. The first explicit description of this object is due to Ebrahimi-Fard and Guo. We provide an alternative description in terms of a certain class of trees, which form a linear basis for this algebra. We use this to treat other related cases, particularly that in which the Baxter map is required to be quasi-idempotent, in a unified manner. Each case corresponds to a different class of trees. Our main focus is on the underlying combinatorics. In several cases, we provide bijections between our various classes of trees and more familiar combinatorial objects including certain Schroeder paths and Motzkin paths. We calculate the dimensions of the homogeneous components of these algebras (with respect to a bidegree related to the number of nodes and the number of angles in the trees) and the corresponding generating series. An important feature is that the combinatorics is captured by the idempotent case; the others are obtained from this case by various binomial transforms. We also relate free Baxter algebras to Loday's dendriform trialgebras and dialgebras. We show that the free dendriform trialgebra (respectively, dialgebra) on one generator embeds in the free Baxter algebra with a quasi-idempotent map (respectively, with a quasi-idempotent map and an idempotent generator). This refines results of Ebrahimi-Fard and Guo.

W is a symmetric or alternating tensor whereas U belongs to a class of the infinite set S of irreducible symmetry classes characterized by the partition (2,1). Using Computer Algebra we search for such generators whose coordinate representations are polynomials with a minimal number of summands. For a generic choice of the symmetry class of U we obtain lengths of 16 or 20 summands if W is symmetric or skew-symmetric, respectively. In special cases these numbers can be reduced to the minima 12 or 10. If these minima occur then U admits an index commutation symmetry. Furthermore minimal lengths are possible if U is formed from torsion-free covariant derivatives of symmetric or alternating 2-tensor fields. Foundation of our investigations is a theorem of S. A. Fulling, R. C. King, B. G. Wybourne and C. J. Cummins about a Young symmetrizer that generates the symmetry class of algebraic covariant derivative curvature tensors. Furthermore we apply ideals and idempotents in group rings C[S_r] and discrete Fourier transforms for symmetric groups S_r. For symbolic calculations we used the Mathematica packages Ricci and PERMS.

Many natural counting problems arise in connection with the normal form of braids--and seem to have never been considered so far. Here we solve some of them by analysing the normality condition in terms of the associated permutations, their descents and the corresponding partitions. A number of different induction schemes appear in that framework.

Counting the contribution rate of a world-line formula to Feynman diagrams in $\phi^3$ theory, we explain the idea how to determine precise combinatorics of Bern-Kosower-like amplitudes derived from a bosonic string theory for $N$-point two-loop Feynman amplitudes. In this connection we also present a method to derive simple and compact world-line forms for the effective action.

Lady Sarah Isabella Augusta Wilson was the aunt of Winston Spencer Churchill. In 1899 she became the first woman war correspondent when she was recruited to cover the Siege of Mafeking for the Daily Mail during the Boer War. She moved to Mafeking with her husband at the start of the war, where he was aide-de-camp to Colonel Robert Baden-Powell. Baden-Powell asked her to leave Mafeking for her own safety after the Boers threatened to storm the British garrison. This she duly did, and set off on a madcap adventure in the company of her maid, travelling through the South African countryside until she was finally captured by the enemy and returned to the town in exchange for a horse thief being held there. Dwindling food supplies became a constant theme in the stories she sent back to the Mail and the situation seemed hopeless when the garrison was hit by an outbreak of malarial typhoid. In this weakened state the Boers managed to penetrate the outskirts of the town but the British stood firm and repelled the assault. (Summary by Wikipedia)

The town of Superior, Ohio, certainly was living up to its name! In what was undoubtedly the most spectacular feat of the century, it simply picked itself up one night and rose two full miles above Earth! Radio messages stated simply that Superior had seceded from Earth. But Don Cort, stranded on that rising town, was beginning to suspect that nothing was simple about Superior except its citizens. Calmly they accepted their rise in the world as being due to one of their local townspeople, a crackpot professor. But after a couple of weeks of floating around, it began to be obvious that the professor had no idea how to get them down. So then it was up to Cort: either find a way to anchor Superior, or spend the rest of his days on the smallest—and the nuttiest—planet in the galaxy! (Summary From The Book)

Published between 1833 and 1841, the 90 Tracts were written by various members of "The Oxford Movement". They cover various aspects of Anglo-Catholic doctrine and other theological matters. In terms of population, in terms of development and in terms of wealth, Victoria boomed in the 1850s and 1860s due to the Gold Rush. Undeniably, the colony had money to burn. Surprise port visits by the Russian corvette Bogatyr and the Confederate warship Shenandoah in the 1860s awakened in Victoria a deep sense of vulnerability, and Victorians set their minds to a new domestic project – a decades long pursuit of security. That effort would ultimately give rise to extensive coastal fortifications, militia and artillery formations both voluntary and professional, sea mines, and a small but not inconsequential naval flotilla whose backbone would be the formidable ironclad H.M.V.S. Cerberus. Not that these efforts were confined to Victoria alone. The not-infrequently perilous straits of the Mother Country as it navigated the treacherous shoals of European politics and global empire provided ample reasons for insomnia. To varying degrees the other states too had constituted forces, and most made a start at acquiring ‘warships’—an assemblage tending more to the ‘dinky’ side than that term might otherwise suggest. But where naval matters were concerned New South Wales made something of a false start, while Queensland and South Australia simply started late. Whether this is because the issue didn’t resonate as much in the other colonies, or whether Victoria simply had larger resources to sink into an inherently (economically) unproductive project is not immediately obvious. Efforts _were_ made in all the colonies, however and joint defence and a federal fleet would be a not insignificant impetus towards Federation. The Australian colonies would largely abandon armaments acquisition with the depression of the 1890s, but the arrival of Theodore Roosevelt’s Great White Fleet in 1908 exercised popular imagination, and the recently federated Commonwealth of Australia set about acquiring a new navy. This new Royal Australian Navy, lead by the battle-cruiser HMAS Australia, steamed into Sydney Harbour for the first time in late 1913. This new institution would be tested far more strenuously than the naval forces of the unfederated colonies ever were.
