1NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS) 20140006001: The 4 Ms CHANDRA Deep Field-South Number Counts Apportioned By Source Class: Pervasive Active Galactic Nuclei And The Ascent Of Normal Galaxies

By

We present 0.5-2 keV, 2-8 keV, 4-8 keV, and 0.5-8 keV (hereafter soft, hard, ultra-hard, and full bands, respectively) cumulative and differential number-count (log N-log S ) measurements for the recently completed approx. equal to 4 Ms Chandra Deep Field-South (CDF-S) survey, the deepest X-ray survey to date. We implement a new Bayesian approach, which allows reliable calculation of number counts down to flux limits that are factors of approx. equal to 1.9-4.3 times fainter than the previously deepest number-count investigations. In the soft band (SB), the most sensitive bandpass in our analysis, the approx. equal to 4 Ms CDF-S reaches a maximum source density of approx. equal to 27,800 deg(sup -2). By virtue of the exquisite X-ray and multiwavelength data available in the CDF-S, we are able to measure the number counts from a variety of source populations (active galactic nuclei (AGNs), normal galaxies, and Galactic stars) and subpopulations (as a function of redshift, AGN absorption, luminosity, and galaxy morphology) and test models that describe their evolution. We find that AGNs still dominate the X-ray number counts down to the faintest flux levels for all bands and reach a limiting SB source density of approx. equal to 14,900 deg(sup -2), the highest reliable AGN source density measured at any wavelength. We find that the normal-galaxy counts rise rapidly near the flux limits and, at the limiting SB flux, reach source densities of approx. equal to 12,700 deg(sup -2) and make up 46% plus or minus 5% of the total number counts. The rapid rise of the galaxy counts toward faint fluxes, as well as significant normal-galaxy contributions to the overall number counts, indicates that normal galaxies will overtake AGNs just below the approx. equal to 4 Ms SB flux limit and will provide a numerically significant new X-ray source population in future surveys that reach below the approx. equal to 4 Ms sensitivity limit. We show that a future approx. equal to 10 Ms CDF-S would allow for a significant increase in X-ray-detected sources, with many of the new sources being cosmologically distant (z greater than or approx. equal to 0.6) normal galaxies.

7Theory And Inference For A Class Of Observation-driven Models With Application To Time Series Of Counts

By

This paper studies theory and inference related to a class of time series models that incorporates nonlinear dynamics. It is assumed that the observations follow a one-parameter exponential family of distributions given an accompanying process that evolves as a function of lagged observations. We employ an iterated random function approach and a special coupling technique to show that, under suitable conditions on the parameter space, the conditional mean process is a geometric moment contracting Markov chain and that the observation process is absolutely regular with geometrically decaying coefficients. Moreover the asymptotic theory of the maximum likelihood estimates of the parameters is established under some mild assumptions. These models are applied to two examples; the first is the number of transactions per minute of Ericsson stock and the second is related to return times of extreme events of Goldman Sachs Group stock.

9Saved By The Bell:The New Class-It's The Thought That Counts

By

I have here another very rare tie-in novel for the Saved by the Bell spin-off series "The New Class". Only more one of the tie-in novels left to find("Finders, Keepers"). This one is actually a direct sequel to the previous book "May the Best Team Win", which is unusual in that usually you don't see these kinds of tie-in books pick up right where the previous one left off.

In January 2010, the General Assembly passed the Complete College Tennessee Act (CCTA), a comprehensive reform agenda seeking to transform public higher education through changes in academic, fiscal, and administrative policies at the state and institutional levels. While the higher education landscape has been shaped by the CCTA, it is also evolving with the adoption of the "Drive to 55," and the FOCUS Act, which alters the governance structure of higher education by giving six universities, previously under the Tennessee Board of Regents, independent governing boards. This year, Tennessee Higher Education Commission (THEC) released an update to the 2015-2025 Master Plan entitled "Enabling the Competitive Edge: Tennessee Higher Education in the New Economy." The update on Tennessee's higher education landscape and progress toward the "Drive to 55" emphasizes three domains: student success, family prosperity, and the future workforce. This Fact Book includes the following performance categories and illustrative indicators: (1) Student preparation, such as admission rates, freshman class profiles, and learning support placement and success rates, by subject area; (2) Student participation, such as college-going rates, overall enrollment, and enrollment by critical student subpopulations; (3) Student progression, such as end-of-term enrollment counts, freshman-to-sophomore retention rates, the number of students passing credit hour benchmarks under the higher education funding formula and lottery scholarship renewal rates; (4) Student success and completion, such as student transfer activity and subsequent academic performance, graduation rates, time to degree, credentials awarded, and credentials awarded per one hundred (100) full-time equivalent enrolled students; (5) Workforce participation, such as labor market supply and demand, employer satisfaction survey results, job placement rates, and licensure passage rates; (6) Academic trends, such as student engagement survey results, changes to the academic program inventory, low-producing academic programs, the number and percentage of accredited programs, and the percentage of lower division instructional courses taught by full-time faculty, part-time faculty, and graduate assistants; (7) Financing trends, such as state appropriation levels and net tuition revenues, state and total subsidies per student, and degree costs; and (8) Affordability trends, such as in-state and out-of-state tuition rates, net costs of attendance, and need-based and merit-based student financial aid. 15A Hierarchical Latent Class Model For Predicting Disability Small Area Counts From Survey Data

By

This article considers the estimation of the number of severely disabled people using data from the Italian survey on Health Conditions and Appeal to Medicare. Disability is indirectly measured using a set of categorical items, which survey a set of functions concerning the ability of a person to accomplish everyday tasks. Latent Class Models can be employed to classify the population according to different levels of a latent variable connected with disability. The survey, however, is designed to provide reliable estimates at the level of Administrative Regions (NUTS2 level), while local authorities are interested in quantifying the amount of population that belongs to each latent class at a sub-regional level. Therefore, small area estimation techniques should be used. The challenge of the present application is that the variable of interest is not directly observed. Adopting a full Bayesian approach, we base small area estimation on a Latent Class model in which the probability of belonging to each latent class changes with covariates and the influence of age is learnt from the data using penalized splines. Deimmler-Reisch bases are shown to improve speed and mixing of MCMC chains used to simulate posteriors.

4Early History of the Airplane

By

Book's cover

The Brothers Orville and Wilbur Wright made the first controlled, powered and sustained heavier-than-air flight, on 17th December 1903. They were not the first to build and fly aircraft, but they invented the controls that were necessary for a pilot to steer the aircraft, which made fixed wing powered flight possible. The Early History of the Airplane consists of three short essays about the beginnings of human flight. The second essay retells the first flight: <em>This flight lasted only 12 seconds, but it was nevertheless the first in the history of the world in which a machine carrying a man had raised itself by its own power into the air in full flight, had sailed forward without reduction of speed and had finally landed at a point as high as that from which it started.</em> (Introduction by Availle)

8Eyes Of The World

By

Book's cover

The Eyes of the World was the Best Selling Book for 1914 according to Publisher's Weekly. The novel explores what Harold Bell Wright views as the false world of artists, writers, critics, and their wealthy patrons. Two of the main characters are the famous author, Conrad LaGrange and Aaron King, an aspiring artist. LaGrange regretfully describes his writings as “filthy stories in good English” and feels he has sold his soul to become successful. While in California, recovering from a physical breakdown, he befriends Aaron King whose mother he knew when he was a boy. Lagrange serves as counselor to the young man, for he knows the pitfalls of success from his own experience. (Summary by Tom Weiss)

17Gadsby

By

Book's cover

Fifty-year-old John Gadsby is alarmed by the decline of his hometown, Branton Hills, and rallies the city's young people to form an "Organization of Youth" to build civic spirit and improve living standards. Gadsby and his youthful army, despite some opposition, transform Branton Hills from a stagnant municipality into a bustling, thriving city. The story begins around 1906 and continues through World War I, Prohibition, and President Warren G. Harding's administration.<br><br> "Gadsby" is a lipogram - a whole novel of some 50.000 words without a single instance of the letter E. When it first appeared in 1939 it was hardly noticed by the general public, but a modern reviewer called it "probably the most ambitious work ever attempted in this genre". Hardcopies of the book are extremely rare and sell for thousands of dollars. (Summary by Availle and Wikipedia)

18When Father Carves the Duck

By

Ernest Vincent Wright was an American author known for his book Gadsby, a 50,000-word novel which, except for the introduction and a note at the end, did not use the letter "e". The biographical details of his life are unclear. A 2002 article in the Village Voice by Ed Park said he might have been English by birth but was more probably American. The article said he might have served in the navy and that he has been incorrectly called a graduate of MIT. The article says that he attended a vocational high school attached to MIT in 1888 but there is no record that he graduated. Park said rumors that Wright died within hours of Gadsby being published are untrue. - Summary by Wikipedia

19Feminism in Greek Literature

By

This study, published in 1923, examines the views regarding women's place in Ancient Greek society based especially on the writings of Homer, Euripides, Aristophanes, Plato, Socrates and Aristotle. As the author offers his opinion and judgement, that at times reflect views on women, homosexuality and other social groups and themes that might be considered controversial now, he leaves an interesting picture of the state of Classical scholarship in the early 20th century.<br> "There is a question sometimes put to scholars, a doubt often latent in scholars' minds — How was it that Greek civilisation, with all its high ideals and achievements, fell so easily before what seems at first sight an altogether inferior culture? The fact is — and it is as well to state it plainly — that the Greek world perished from one main cause, a low ideal of womanhood and a degradation of women which found expression both in literature and in social life. The position of women and the position of slaves — for the two classes went together — were the canker-spots which, left unhealed, brought about the decay first of Athens and then of Greece." 21Fundamentals Volume 2

By

The Fundamentals: A Testimony To The Truth (generally referred to simply as The Fundamentals) is a set of ninety essays published between 1910 and 1915 by the Testimony Publishing Company of Chicago. According to its foreword, the publication was designed to be "a new statement of the fundamentals of Christianity." However, its contents reflect a concern with certain theological innovations related to liberal Christianity, especially biblical higher criticism. It is widely considered to be the foundation of modern Christian fundamentalism. The essays were written by sixty-four different authors, representing most of the major Protestant Christian denominations. It was mailed free of charge to ministers, missionaries, professors of theology, YMCA and YWCA secretaries, Sunday school superintendents, and other Protestant religious workers in the United States and other English-speaking countries. Over three million volumes (250,000 sets) were sent out. 26Winning of Barbara Worth

By

Book's cover

This is a fairly substantial western, written in 1911 by Harold Bell Wright, then a major bestselling author. (His best-known novel is “The Shepherd of the Hills”) Strangely, the winning of Barbara Worth is a small part of the story, though she is one of the main characters. She was a foundling, discovered with her dying mother in the desert. She takes the name of her adopted father, Jefferson Worth. He is perhaps the main character; he is a capitalist, with very humanitarian qualities. He is pitted against other capitalists, ones with little concern for the good of the settlers attracted to the desert they are developing. The story concerns the efforts to reclaim the desert (Jaquinn Valley), by diverting waters of the Colorado River into canals that will make the land suitable for crops and cities. (Wright could not possibly have imagined the low water level of the Colorado River of today.) Wright wrote about capitalism vs. labor in several of his novels, and he does here. He often showed biased support for labor; however, he also showed a real effort to understand the role of each. In his time there were almost no regulations on capitalists, and there was, in fact, great abuses by the barons. This conflict is the heart of the story. But it is also a story of the loyalty of several employees of Jefferson Worth–loyalty, and love toward Worth, and also toward his adopted daughter. (A silent film of the book was Gary Cooper’s first movie.). There are many exciting elements in the story: floods, betrayals, business chicanery, and romance. All things considered; the book holds up well.(Summary by Bob Rollins)

27Helen of the Old House

By

Book's cover

Helen is not the main character; it is the mill, in this small town in the first half of the 20th century. This is a story of labor strife, class inequity and warfare, poverty and wealth, socialism vs. capitalism, and love and hatred. It centers on two families; each family includes a father and a son and a daughter. In their childhood years, they were all very close. Over time, Helen ‘s family becomes very wealthy, the other family less so. By questionable means, Helen’s father becomes the owner of the mill. He represents corporate greed at its worst. A labor organizer named Jake Vodell creates major strife. He is described as a communist and a “foreigner”. A central character is an old, injured and retired worker called the Interpreter. He attempts to make the town realize that the real enemy is neither labor nor capital; it is the extremes of capital greed and labor socialism. Such class conflict is a major backdrop in most of Harold Bell Wright’s novels. He was a best-selling author of his time. His books show how much progress we have made in technology; human behavior seems little changed - Summary by Bob Rollins

31When a Man's a Man

By

Book's cover

When a Man's a Man is a novel written by Harold Bell Wright, an author who was quite popular in the first decades of the 20th Century. This engaging story, somewhat melodramatic in its unfolding, begins with the introduction of a stranger to the still untamed Arizona landscape and to its life and people. The novel explores the contrast between the modern, civilized life of the cities with that found in the West, with its physical demands and, the author would assert, its more sincere and wholesome lifestyle. The novel's central theme may very well be an exploration of what makes a man a 'true man.' - Summary by KevinS
