Participants will virtually go fishing for crabs around an island. Concretely, 60 times participants will see a boat take them to one of six locations around the island, where, each time, they will perform 10 trials before being taken to the next, randomly selected, location. On each trial, participants will position a cage hanging from the top of the screen along the screen's y-axis and drop it, trying to catch as many crabs as possible. As the cage is sinking, five crabs will crawl out of one location in the sand at the bottom of the screen and spread out a bit, each of which will either be caught by the cage or run away. Humans can be systematically biased in their decision-making. One factor that is critical in international strategic decisions is psychic distance, or the perceived distance to a country. As such decisions often involve uncertainty, they provide nourishing grounds for cognitive biases. I thus assume that cognitive biases influence the formation of psychic distance perceptions and subsequent choices. One relevant cognitive bias is the anomaly in which changes in the formulation of problems leads to shifts in preferences and decision outcomes. Could it be that mangers’ psychic distance perceptions are biased by the way in which information is presented to them? My research tests this in the context of the international entry mode choice; one of the most critical decisions in international business. By applying an experimental research design, I aim to demonstrate this effect. A within-subject experimental design allows me to observe the proposed causal links directly and control for noise around psychic distance perceptions. My research adds to the growing literature on psychic distance and its criticality to international strategic decisions. By analyzing psychic distance on an individual level and at the same time observing actual decisions, I provide a holistic view that is – up to this point – scarce. Additionally, I answer calls for more behavioral approaches to strategy and advance the methodological approaches in the field.

Although there is abundant research investigating how people make value-based decisions, few have attempted to consider item values, stimulus sizes, as well as their joint influences on value-based choices. For example, people may be allured to choose food items from flyers or menus based on the presented size and/or subjective preference. Here, we ask people to make size-based judgements between food items while manipulating the stimulus size. The aim of this experiment is to follow-up from a previous experiment (see https://osf.io/8jvrf/?view_only=0918e7d8c89243c2aa4415d95c23e567) where we asked people to make preference-based judgements instead of size-based judgements.

The present study contributes to the descriptive evidence base on shared book reading practices in early childhood education (ECE) classrooms across three different states in the Southeastern United States. The study will build on the limited research base that suggests ECE teachers are typically reading aloud substantially more narrative texts than informational texts in their classrooms. Previous work has reported values less than 6% in ECE teachers’ usage of informational texts when compared to narrative texts (Pentimonti et al., 2011; Yopp and Yopp, 2006). However, more recent work expanding into kindergarten has shown incremental increases in the use of informational texts over the last decade (La Croix et al., 2023; Wang et al., 2023). Informational texts are important for preschoolers because they help build children’s background knowledge of the natural and social world, an essential component for successful reading (Duke, 2000; Duke and Kays, 1998). This paper will use an extant dataset derived from two larger research projects (PI: Beth Phillips, co-PI: Carla Wood, co-PI: Sonia Cabell). The primary research question for this paper is: What genres of texts are ECE teachers using during shared book reading across the school year? Additionally, this study will also examine the following question: To what extent does classroom age composition predict ECE teachers’ use of informational text in the classroom?

This online study serves two major goals: First, we want to quantify the effect of carbon labels (traffic-light symbols with a number indicating the greenhouse gas emissions of a dish expressed in kilograms of CO2 equivalents) included in restaurant menus on diners’ dish choice behavior and associated greenhouse gas emissions, thus replicating the results of an earlier experiment (Author, 2022). Second, we want to determine how far a dish choice informed by these labels can be regarded as a rational action. According to the well-established Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB, Ajzen, 1991), the intention to choose a climate-friendly dish at a restaurant can be predicted by the attitude toward this behavior, a corresponding subjective norm, and a corresponding perceived behavioral control. A recent correlational study (Liu et al., 2022) confirmed this assumption. Our goal is to replicate this finding using an experimental design. Additionally, we want to explore whether carbon labels on menus would be accepted among diners and whether the labels exert a spill-over effect.

We examine hypothetical food choices of individuals in two conditions: a control condition and a fiber prompt condition. Participants in the fiber prompt condition are exposed to a message prior to beginning the food choice process that presents FDA-recognized health benefits of consuming dietary fiber. Participants can shape the choice environment (as in the real world) by directing their attention to subsets of products rather than considering all products--a process that our experiment design captures--and have access to information about the products, including brand, product name, nutrition information, and price. We examine multiple pathways through which a prompt can influence choices by documenting the set of products considered, use of information, and consideration of short and long-term health impacts on the fiber content and nutritional quality of the chosen products.

Greater involvement may also optimize the decision-making process by which treatments are chosen thereby reducing untoward decision outcomes such as disappointment, regret, or depression. Using a multimedia CD-ROM format, Choices provides an innovative approach to personalized decision making by incorporating unique features that currently are not available in existing programs. The ultimate objective of Choices is to help patients make effective decisions under stressful and threatening circumstances. Specifically, Choices has the following unique features: (I) the program is designed to be user-friendly and comfortable for women of all ages and education levels, (2) an assessment of the decision maker's personal decision style is to Set the structure of the program, (3) the program considers the cognitive demands of the decision making in this health care context, (4) it goes beyond eliciting personal values and preferences by providing solutions to common decision failures, and (5) provides and opportunity for pre-decision rehearsal of different options to avoid unexpected decision outcomes or negative emotional responses.

Jolivette Anderson-Douoning shares the lived experience of Mrs. Goldleana, whose story illuminates the role Black women played as laborers in the Louisiana cotton and timber industries—and in their own families—in the 1940s and 50s. She also highlights geographical differences in Black migration: some left the South while others remained. Jolivette Anderson-Douoning is a PhD Candidate in American Studies and currently serves as the Inaugural Edmundite African American Fellow at Saint Michael’s College. Her research focuses on race, space, and place, and the lived experiences of Black women and Black families in segregated neighborhoods of Shreveport, Louisiana after World War II.

Recent work on altruistic decision making suggests that attention’s flexible and dynamic role may drive changes in altruistic choice under time constraints because people prioritize looking first at preferred information (Teoh, Yao, Cunningham, & Hutcherson, 2020). Specifically, people under time constraints generally make more selfish choices, which can be explained in part because under time pressure (compared to time delay) people prioritize acquiring information about their own outcomes and expedite their choices without acquiring information about others’ outcomes. However, in contrast to this study, which found that time pressure increases selfishness, a large body of work has argued that time pressure should result in more prosocial choices, because automatic and intuitive processes favour prosociality (Bouwmeester et al., 2017; Rand, 2017; Rand, Greene, & Nowak, 2012). This raises a puzzle about why we find divergent behavioural results from other studies, and whether the attentional explanation we proposed to explain changes under time pressure might provide a resolution. One notable difference between our work and prior studies is that they employ different economic game paradigms. Specifically, researchers generally observe increased prosociality under time pressure when prosociality is measured within an ultimatum/public goods game where cooperation leads to maximal joint interest. In contrast, some work showing that time pressure increases selfish behavior utilizes Dictator games where self-interest and other’s welfare are generally in conflict (Teoh et al., 2020). We predicted that these different game contexts might induce different attentional biases, which could in turn account for differences in the effects of time pressure on choice. Thus, in this study, we seek to investigate the information search strategies used in these disparate contexts under both high and low time pressure and the influence they exert on subsequent choice behavior. More specifically, because in Ultimatum games participants’ own outcomes are reliant on their partners’ choices, we may expect participants to give more consideration to their partners’ welfare and be less selfish. Under time pressure, this may result in a prioritisation of others’ welfare due to its greater potential to impact participants’ own outcomes, biasing attention towards the other, and behavior towards prosociality.

This document describes the systematic approach used at Philips High School (PHS) in Birmingham, Alabama, to collect, store, and use various diagnostic tools when assisting special population enrollees with choices influencing their educational/occupational goals. It explains how the Differential Aptitude Test (DAT) is used in combination with interest surveys, course selection sheets, other instruments, and input from parents and teachers to recruit students with varied interests, aptitudes, and goals and to place those students in the proper courses and, when necessary, provide them with remedial support through a computer-assisted basic skills program that can be implemented through PHS's vocational education department. The document contains the following materials explaining the PHS program to reinforce educational/occupational choices for special population enrollees: description of the DAT and its components; definitions of the various categories under the heading of special population enrollees; procedures/guidelines for analyzing DAT and Career Interest Inventory results and interpreting DAT/Career Interest Inventory results; available remediation support; a table cross-referencing course offerings, aptitudes, and occupational groups; and sample educational plans developed for three students. Tough Choices begins not with a hypothesis, but rather a question. Statistically, the Center for Public Policy Priorities knows that low-income Texas families are engaged in a juggling act--struggling to survive on limited income. If the center could ask even a few of them how they manage, what would they tell them? What does it mean to earn too little? How can their experiences inform the decisions facing policymakers? Based on more than 30 hours of interviews that yielded over 160,000 transcribed words, Tough Choices features actual stories from six low-income working families in Austin and nearby rural communities, whom we interviewed for several months in 2004. These families spoke with the center openly and eloquently about the meaning of their experiences, providing us not just with insight into their lives, but the lives of more than half a million working poor families in Texas. This document presents data in lists and in tabular form on colleges attended by graduates of Oregon secondary schools for the fall of 1994. The lists presented include the seven state universities, 16 community colleges, and 20 private colleges and universities within the state attended by these students. The first table presents a breakdown by county of 1994 high school graduates admitted in the same year to Oregon colleges. Out of a total of 28,237 high school graduates, 11,743 (42 percent) were enrolled in Oregon Colleges. Of these college freshmen, 4,500 were attending state institutions, 5,801 were at community colleges, and 1,442 were enrolled in private institutions. A breakdown of Oregon high school graduates admitted by Oregon colleges the fall following graduation for the years 1985 to 1994 is also given. The remaining tables list the number of high school graduates of the class of 1994 enrolled in state colleges and universities by college attended; in community colleges by college attended; and in independent colleges and universities by college attended. This paper describes an adventure-based treatment program for court-involved youth who display significant alcohol or drug abuse behavior. Project Choices' clients meet the criteria for drug abuse from the Diagnostic Statistical Manual-Revised (DSM-III-R). The clients reside in Project Choices placement homes during the 8-week treatment and 8-week transition programs. Beginning with a morning meditation along with individual and group goal setting, each treatment day includes various group sessions. Through the use of adventure activities, the group is guided sequentially from simple group and individual tasks to more creative and complex problem solving. In addition, the odd-numbered weeks are spent camping out with the fifth week spent in a wilderness environment. In the first four groups, 37 clients completed the 8-week treatment program, and 36 of the 37 clients completed the 8-week transitional aftercare program. Students were rated on weekly behavioral measures by counselors, peers, and themselves. Significant differences in ratings were found in all three groups, suggesting that changes in the client's behavior were noticeable to staff, peers, and self. Subjects' scores decreased from pretest to posttest on the depression and disorganized thinking scales of the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI). Such a decrease was more significant on the Beck Depression Inventory. (KS)

This is an efficacy trial of the We Have Choices (WHC) program, developed and initially evaluated with an IES development grant. WHC explicitly teaches students eight evidence-based behavioral skills associated with academic success and gradually transfers skill management from teacher to students. The trail was planned to include approximately 160 classrooms, randomly assigned to teach WHC or to a business-as-usual comparison condition. Intervention teachers will spend about 45 minutes per week for 9-11 weeks on initial WHC instruction. They then embed practice and reinforcement of skills in classroom activities throughout the year. Comparison-group teachers will receive the WHC intervention in time for the next school year. Measures will assess WHC-targeted student behaviors, social and academic student outcomes, teacher knowledge and instruction of social and academic behaviors, and implementation fidelity. Tests of intervention efficacy will rely on multilevel gain-score analyses, which accounts for repeated measures for individuals and students clustered within classrooms.

We study the problem of load balancing in distributed stream processing engines, which is exacerbated in the presence of skew. We introduce Partial Key Grouping (PKG), a new stream partitioning scheme that adapts the classical "power of two choices" to a distributed streaming setting by leveraging two novel techniques: key splitting and local load estimation. In so doing, it achieves better load balancing than key grouping while being more scalable than shuffle grouping. We test PKG on several large datasets, both real-world and synthetic. Compared to standard hashing, PKG reduces the load imbalance by up to several orders of magnitude, and often achieves nearly-perfect load balance. This result translates into an improvement of up to 60% in throughput and up to 45% in latency when deployed on a real Storm cluster.

This project is developing a computer-assisted prototype of an individualized decision support system, called Choices, to assist women newly diagnosed with breast cancer in making stressful treatment decisions in a non-threatening, self-paced, and individualized manner. Using a multimedia CD-ROM format, Choices provides an innovative approach to personalized decision making by incorporating unique features currently un available in existing programs. The Choices program is a joint venture among a multidisciplinary group of scientists at the University of Michigan who bring their respective expertise to the complex problem of helping patients make effective decisions under stressful and threatening circumstances. Specifically, Choices has the following unique features: (1) the program is designed to be user- friendly and comfortable for women of all ages and education levels, (2) an assessment of the decision maker's personal decision style will be used to set the structure of the program, (3) the program will consider the cognitive demands of the decision maker in this health care context by assessing the capacity for directed attention, (4) it goes beyond eliciting personal values and preferences by providing solutions to common decision failures, and (5) provides an opportunity for pre-decision rehearsal of different options to avoid unexpected decision outcomes or negative emotional responses.

What is the purpose of this study? The purpose of this study is to explore the underlying systems driving food choices in humans. Psychology plays a fundamental role in the research into food choice through an understanding of the basics of human behaviour. It is important that we understand how people make food choices to subsequently help promote sustainable and optimal diets. What is the format of this study? In the first part of this study, you will be presented with 210 food pairings and be asked to select one of the two pairs for your next meal. The items contained within each pair are all you will have to eat for your meal. Next, you will be presented with images of singular food items from the first task and confirm whether or not you have consumed each of the food items in the past. After this, you will be asked to indicate your level of taste preference for each of these food items, from “not at all” to “extremely”. In the second part of the study, you will be presented with 125 three-item pizza topping combinations, and be asked to select your level of preference of each combination from "not at all" to "extremely". Following this, you will be asked to individually rate your preference for each of the pizza toppings from "not at all" to extremely". In the third part of the study, you will be asked to complete an eating questionnaire. This experiment probes whether children (starting with a cohort of 8-12-year-olds) can infer the goals of agents based on their sequences of choices between pairs of options.

Through a special project funded by Extension Service-USDA, University of Wisconsin-Extension, tribal women developed curriculum and tested a model for programming with the purpose of enhancing the status of young tribal women. The curriculum was designed so that tribal girls could see the many career options they have, that they realize that preparation for many careers starts in high school, that each girl has special talents and characteristics, that there are disadvantages in being a teenage mother, and that there are some skills which enhance one's choices and some barriers which reduce one's choices. The project design and curriculum could be used by tribal groups in an effort to assist young tribal women to develop their potential and abilities. However, there are some general factors to consider when planning and implementing the program. This paper gives various ideas for implementing the program in other tribal communities. Topics covered are planning and implementing the program; needs for the program (i.e., space, program length and timing, resource people); staffing (i.e., part-time, full-time, selection of staff, training); programming with girls and adults; curriculum for girls; and career conferences.
