Since 1982, the "MetLife Survey of the American Teacher" has examined issues related to education from a variety of perspectives. Surveys in 2001 and 2002 revealed that feelings of alienation from school are prevalent among students, teachers, and parents at the secondary level, resulting in breakdown of the educational process. People do not feel respected, and students come to believe that their teachers fail to know them as individuals with unique talents, dreams, challenges, and expectations. With this background, Jobs for the Future (JJF) has explored the challenges new teachers face and their responses to them, as well as how the challenges are intertwined with relationships among students, teachers, and parents. JFF documented the experiences of ten teachers who graduated from Tuft University's Urban Teacher Training Collaborative (UTTC) Master of Arts in Teaching program in 2002. From May 2002 through June 2003, JFF followed the experiences of these first-year teachers through interviews, retreats, and electronic journal entries. This document reflects, in the words of the teachers, the challenges they faced, the strategies they employed, and their insights into aspects of the UTTC program that were critical in providing them with the confidence and skills to enter their own classrooms, respect their students, and ward off alienation. The findings are reported in five sections: (1) Shift in responsibility from intern to teacher and sustaining factors; (2) Challenges faced in building relationships with students, parents, and teachers; motivating and engaging students in learning; teaching and learning; organizing, planning, and grading; and managing classrooms; (3) Observations on how the UTTC program prepared them for their first year in the classroom and school; (4) Recommendations for strengthening preparation; and (5) Reflections on the success of the first year and future plans.
