Aesthetic Cognitivism posits that artworks are valuable sources of understanding, for example, by "opening our minds". Works of art, such as film, are typically seen as better when they entail defamiliarization - rendering the familiar as strange or presenting remote perspectives. In line with this theory, we plan to investigate whether watching a film that entails increased defamiliarization leads to increased open-mindedness. We plan to prime defamiliarization using a film that employs a non-linear order (thus is high in formal complexity), and investigate whether this leads to increased scores on various open-mindedness measures, as compared to watching the same film in linear order. Thus, this study will also investigate whether open-mindedness is increased via one specific artistic facet of film - formal complexity - as measured by temporal ambiguity. We will also examine whether a potential relationship between formal complexity in film and open-mindedness is mediated by general film expertise, as well as trait open-mindedness.

The world of the arts often gets used economically in an American culture devoted to a bottom line of money and profit. If there's much use and worth for the arts in our culture it comes from its value as entertainment, titillation, diversion or spectacle. For the rich and powerful it's often seen as commodities and investments to be bought, sold, hoarded and displayed by those who see their self-worth and prestige enhanced by the accumulation that these prized objects supposedly will offer them. Nothing new there. Arts patronage refers to the support that kings, popes and the wealthy have provided to artists, musicians, painters and sculptors through the ages. The word patron comes from the Latin and refers to one who gives benefits to his clients. I'm biased. I grew up in a home where both my mother and grandfather were artists and musicians. My grandfather was classically trained at the Royal Academy in Dresden Germany -- and painted his share of portraits of the rich and powerful. But his work was devoted to the idea that the goal of art was to create beauty. My mother studied with him and at the Art Students League of New York, an institution designed to give access to art and studio classes to all comers, regardless of their financial ability or technical background. She later in life identified herself as from the folk art and outsider art school tradition and our home was always alive with the passion and energy of music and people from all walks of life and cultures that she would invite over to paint. It feels like going home again as we welcome the Columbian-American internationally-acclaimed artist, curator, painter, writer and activist ---Viviana Puello to the Radical Imagination. She founded the organization Vivid Arts Network, an international art organization that serves as a platform for transforming professional and emerging artists looking to receive international exposure. With the Network, she has directed her efforts as an activist to the liberation of people caught up in the abuses of human trafficking. Starting with fifteen hundred readers in 2011, Viviana as founder and Editor-in-Chief of the ArtTour International Magazine turned it into a publication that now has over 2 million subscribers and is read in over 205 countries. When asked about her passions, Viviana stated: "everything art is my passion, there's no difference for me, I enjoy creating as much as I like the works of other artists, in the end, we are one, I don't feel the boundaries."

Technocrats of the Imagination traces the rise of collaborative art and technology labs in the U.S. from WWII to the present. Ryan Bishop and John Beck reveal the intertwined histories of the avant-garde art movement and the military-industrial complex, showing how radical pedagogical practices traveled from Germany’s Bauhaus movement to the U.S. art world and interacted with government-funded military research and development in university laboratories. During the 1960s both media labs and studio labs leaned heavily on methods of interdisciplinary collaboration and the power of American modernity to model new modes of social organization. In light of revived interest in Black Mountain College and other 1960s art and technology labs, this book draws important connections between the contemporary art world and the militarized lab model of research that has dominated the sciences since the 1950s.

Stereoscopy is often treated as a cult phenomenon, a gimmick that appears and disappears over and over again. But it is much more than that. Beside popular-cultural applications, it has played roles in science, medicine, warfare – and art. There are numerous artists who have been drawn to it, often commenting on the past uses of stereoscopy by their works. By developing an archaeology of stereoscopic 3D, this lecture reveals some of its earlier (often forgotten) manifestations, and demonstrates how these have been applied and developed further by a wide range of artists.

H R GIGER MUSEUM, SWITZERLAND QUEENS—With a pointy head, razor sharp teeth and a proclivity to wreak havoc on humans and spaceships, the double-jawed aliens in Ridley Scott's blockbuster "Alien" have thrilled, shocked and repulsed movie-goers for decades. Fans of the 1979 film will now be able to get inside the head of the man who created cinema’s most notorious alien—surrealist Swiss artist H.R. Giger. A new exhibit titled Visionaries: The Art of the Fantastic, which opens this month at Queensborough Community College, features work not just by Giger but by fellow surrealists like Isaac Abrams and Bienvenido Bones Banez Jr., curator Olga Spiegel said. “A lot of artists’ work encompasses magic realism, psychedelic art and symbolism,” explained Spiegel, whose own work is on display at the exhibition. “Visionary art had not been accepted until recently, but that is changing now,” she added. Close to 40 artists’ work will be on display at the QCC Art Gallery starting July 10 and running through Sept. 20, 2012. The main draw, however, is expected to be Giger, who won an Academy Award in 1980 for his visual arts work in “Alien," Spiegel said.  Giger’s work at the QCC exhibition includes recent paintings, sculptures and a silkscreen. Fans can take a closer look at a marble bust of what looks like an alien princess and admire the artist's other sculptures like “Nubian Queen.”  Calling his work “dark” and “fantastic,” Spiegel added the artist “attracted a certain crowd.” Recalling "Alien's" phenomenal success, Giger’s longtime friend and agent Leslie Barany said the Swiss painter and sculptor had paintings of the legendary alien, 'Necronom IV' and 'Necronom V' in a art book called 'Necronomicon' long before the famous movie was even conceived.  When Director Ridley Scott saw the paintings, Barany said Scott exclaimed "Why look further, that's the monster.
