The two articles in this publication focus on ways of teaching argumentation and debate in the college setting. The first article examines the place of the argumentation and debate course in the speech communication curriculum and suggests cognitive and behavioral objectives and assignments for use in such a course. The second article discusses teaching debate within the philosophy department. It suggests that philosophical reflection can be of great assistance to debate students and their coaches, and contends that making debate part of an interdisciplinary course will stress the unity of human knowledge by showing students how evidence is used to support conclusions in the physical, biological, and social sciences, as well as the humanities. Developed as a quinmester unit for high schools on performance in argumentation and debate, this guide provides the teacher with teaching strategies for a study in which students refine their understanding of the principles of argumentation and debate through participation in classroom debate. The course includes the structuring of a variety of case approaches, increased awareness of qualitative evaluation of evidence and stylistic factors of persuasion. The guide is arranged by performance objectives with teaching strategies listed under each objective. In this paper, we provide a comprehensive literature review on the development of key argumentation skills to lay a foundation for a framework of the key practice, discuss and debate ideas, which is centrally involved in the expectations for academic reading and writing. Specifically, the framework includes 5 phases of core activities and related sets of argumentation skills, and for each set of skills, a provisional learning progression is designed to identify qualitative shifts in the development of critical argumentation skills informed by the developmental literature. These learning may have the potential to support teachers' instructional decisions that effectively scaffold their students to the next level.

This paper argues that the judge who uses argumentation and logic as the sole criteria for determining the winner of an academic debate sees debate as an intellectual contest with speech being only an incidental element. A paradigm for judging is presented and discussed in terms of the following core concepts: analysis, investigation, evidence, reasoning, refutation, and rebuttal. Analysis is the arriving at an understanding of the proposition and the discovering of the inherent issues. Investigation is the process of accumulating information about a proposition. Evidence is an informative statement believed by the listener and employed by an arguer to secure belief in another statement. Reasoning is the process by which we infer a conclusion from premises. Refutation is the attempted destruction of the opponent's argument. Rebuttal is the attempted rebuilding of an argument once it has been attacked. It is concluded that this paradigm is an excellent one for judging an academic debate. (TS)

This paper argues that the concept of presumption and burden of proof as developed in twentieth century argumentation texts is distinct from the theory developed and perfected by Whately in his "Elements of Rhetoric." The first section of this paper reviews the concepts of presumption and burden of proof as described by Whately, examining how the theory evolved and became more psychologically based. The second section reviews the development of presumption and burden of proof in 26 argumentation texts, showing how presumption is treated with either nonexistent or circumscribed attention to the psychological aspects of presumption. It is concluded from a comparison of Whately's theory to the applications of these concepts in twentieth century argumentation and debate texts that the assumed relationship between the two is generally not valid.
