This report presents the responses from 41 libraries (65% rate of return). The entries are listed alphabetically by the name of the institution under the following headings: (1) SUNY university centers; (2) colleges of arts and sciences; (3) health science centers; (4) specialized colleges; (5) colleges of agriculture and technology; (6) community colleges; and (7) statutory colleges. Each entry includes the name, address, and telephone number of the library as well as information about its collections, users, hours, personnel concerned with archives and special collections, whether there is a separate budget for special collections, and specific aspects, issues, or problems mentioned by the respondent. Conclusions based on the findings of the survey are also presented, and it is recommended that resource sharing among these types of SUNY libraries be implemented, and that those with specific expertise in this area create a special collections/archives caucus, workgroup, roundtable, or other appropriate organization. Introduction: Explores the approach to communication of memory in archives, libraries and museums in European Union research projects in 2000-2005. The main objectives were: to identify predominant aspects of heritage communication; to determine whether and how heritage communication was related to memory; to establish patterns of participation in projects by determining types of institutions and their country of origin. Method: Content analysis of European Union project descriptions to determine the perceptions of how memory is communicated in archives, libraries and museums. Analysis: Qualitative and quantitative analyses were carried out to identify the most visible aspects of heritage communication, interrelationship of memory and heritage and impact of certain institutions and countries on the development of project ideas. Results: The analysis revealed that the definitive features of archives, libraries and museums were collections and information management processes. Meeting social needs of present communities and developing meaningful stories of the past were almost not considered. The domination of libraries and museums in information and cultural projects respectively was identified, while archives were the least visible. Conclusions: The priorities of European Union programmes should provide more space for creative feedback from project initiators, incorporate humanitarian and social strands to enrich understanding of the roles of memory institutions and heritage, and maintain the proper balance between informational and socio-cultural aspects of heritage communication. They have been so by providing public access to culture and knowledge, by being agents for enlightenment and by being public meeting places in their communities. Digitization and globalization poses new challenges in relation to upholding a sustainable public sphere. Can libraries, archives and museums contribute in meeting these challenges?

The development of an integrated national plan of information services is the topic of the provisional final report of the seminar which is in Spanish. The accompanying five-page declaration, conclusions and recommendations, in English, implicitly include concepts which will permit the drawing up of a national information policy. The Seminar considered, however, that a Latin American and Caribbean Working Group should be created as soon as possible for the purpose of elaborating a document containing, in a hierarchical and systematic way, the elements and bases for the formulation of such a policy, in order to help governments determine their own information policies, according to their circumstances and their needs. To this end, recommendations are made to governments, international organizations and to professionals in the field of library-information science. (Author/SJ)

This publication follows the tradition of publishing selected papers from Pacific Islands Association of Libraries, Archives and Museums (PIALA) annual conferences. This 21st annual conference was held in Kosrae, Federated States of Micronesia, November 14-17, 2011. The volume begins with a listing of the members of the PIALA 2011 Planning Committee and PIALA Officers and Executive Board, Acknowledgements, and the Conference program schedule. Welcoming remarks from Kosrae State Governor Lyndon L. Jackson and Kosrae State Legislature Speaker Lyndon P. Abraham are provided. Lecture via Zoom by Kevin C. Miller, Head of Archives and Special Collections, UC Davis Library. This talk explores possible career trajectories with an ethnomusicology degree, particularly in combination with additional education or training in library and archival science. Using his own educational and career pathways as a starting point, Miller will demonstrate how he used his PhD in Ethnomusicology and a Master of Library and Information Science–both from UCLA–to navigate a successful career that ultimately leveraged both degrees. The talk will also discuss the importance of working with archives and special collections–both as a researcher and a depositor of your fieldwork materials–and call attention to the similar tenets and even techniques of the professions. For example, both ethnomusicology and archival science place a high value on working with communities. In the case of the latter, “community archiving” centers local knowledge and values, encourages partnerships, and emphasizes consultation over custodianship. A significant portion of the talk will be reserved for Q&A. Dr. Kevin C. Miller holds a PhD in Ethnomusicology (2008) and a Master of Library and Information Science (2010), both from UCLA. He has held positions at the Los Angeles Philharmonic Archives and Pepperdine University, and is currently the Head of Archives and Special Collections at the UC Davis Library, where he has worked since 2016.
