Adolescents in Humanitarian Crisis investigates the experiences of adolescents displaced by humanitarian crisis. The world is currently seeing unprecedented levels of mass displacement, and almost half of the world’s 70 million displaced people are children and adolescents under the age of 18. Displacement for adolescents comes with huge disruption to their education and employment prospects, as well as increased risks of poor psychosocial outcomes and sexual and gender-based violence for girls. Considering these intersectional vulnerabilities throughout, this book explores the experiences of adolescents from refugee, internally displaced persons and stateless communities in Bangladesh, Ethiopia, Jordan, Lebanon, Palestine and Rwanda. Drawing on innovative mixed-methods research, the book investigates adolescent capabilities, including education, health and nutrition, freedom from violence and bodily integrity, psychosocial wellbeing, voice and agency, and economic empowerment. Centring the diverse voices and experiences of young people and focusing on how policy and programming can be meaningfully improved, this book will be a vital guide for humanitarian students and researchers, and for practitioners seeking to build effective, evidence-based policy.

Cameroons war torn North West region faces a serious mental health crisis among adolescents that hasnt received enough research attention. Our work looks at how the ongoing Anglophone crisis affects displaced teens psychological wellbeing, studying both what puts them at risk and how they cope. The study used two key theories Bronfenbrenners Ecological Systems Theory and Lazarus and Folkmans stress coping model to understand how the conflict disrupts teens lives and what helps them adapt. For this study, the study combined survey data from 366 displaced adolescents getting responses from nearly 92 of those asked with in depth focus group discussions. The study carefully selected participants from displaced communities and analyzed the information using both statistics and thematic methods. The results paint a troubling picture about two thirds of teens showed signs of mental health disorders. School disruptions average score 4.21 5 , family separation 4.15 , and constant fear of violence 4.18 emerged as major stressors. Negative attitudes about mental health 3.72 made things even harder. But theres hope teens relied on their faith 4.12 , family support 3.98 , and community ties 3.75 to get through tough times. These findings show the study urgently need trauma sensitive support in conflict areas. The study suggests building mental health services into schools and camps, training local health workers, and working with religious leaders to reduce stigma. This research offers practical ways to help teens in Cameroon and other crisis zones, showing that while war takes a heavy psychological toll, culturally appropriate coping methods combined with systemic support can foster recovery. According to the Carnegie Council on Adolescent Development, young adolescents are felt to be far more at risk for self-destructive behaviors than ever before, and middle grades schools are failing to meet students' needs. As part of a plan for restructuring middle grades education, Illinois has created a middle school endorsement added to elementary or secondary teacher certification and has created a model for integrating health, education, and social services into middle level education. One of the university courses designed to meet requirements for the middle school endorsement involves inservice and preservice teachers in learning about basic issues in eight developmentally appropriate areas and embedding those issues within each subject of the regular curriculum. The eight areas include self-esteem, peer relationships, gangs and violence, loss (including death and dying), nutrition, sexual activity, alcohol/drugs/tobacco, and communicable diseases. For each topic, a representative from a community or social service agency presents critical information, and teams of class members devise interdisciplinary units. Appendices to this paper list groups involved in the restructuring process, health and social indicators for early adolescents, health data about students in grades 5 through 8, and a table of contents from a guide to the middle school endorsement course described. Parents' behavior as perceived by an adolescent population admitted to the adolescent crisis Ward at USC Medical Center is analyzed. The sample consisted of 86 patients who were admitted to the adolescent crisis ward during 1969 and 1970. The population could be divided according to four distinct crisis groups: (1) the suicidal group; (2) the aggressive group; (3) the psychotic group; and (4) the drug-induced psychotic group. Questionnaires were given out and data was analyzed in reference to various questions. It was found that the parents of the patients in the Adolescent Crisis Ward are perceived as significantly more punitive than parents of a control group of normal low socioeconomic children. It was also found that the perception of parental behavior by psychiatrically disturbed adolescents in a crisis ward can be described in terms of three dimensions: the nurturing parent, the punishing parent, and the bipolar parent. Finally it was found that the four crisis groups are not significantly different with respect to their perception of parental behavior. (WS)

Increasingly in the last decade, adolescent patients have come to the attention of psychiatrists, psychologists and social workers. Characteristically, when a teenager comes for help, he is in a state of crisis. After dealing for two years with adolescents in crisis, the Outpatient Clinic at McLean Hospital has learned to subdivide the great number of adolescents in crisis into meaningful types and categories. The main finding on clinical adolescent crisis is that families are intimately involved in the crisis; that there is family reinforcement. An adolescent in crisis also has to be distinguished from the chronically disturbed adolescent where the crisis is merely the visible peak of larger disturbance which had been hitherto clinically submerged. A four weeks limit is set on treatment of crisis situations. The use of a team approach and information gathering in three different settings is given by means of case examples. Treatment can be given in two ways, either by family treatment or individual treatment. Family therapy is more effective, since often the crisis is symptomatic of a larger family disturbance.
