Focusing upon the central problems of effective community practice in town and country areas, the four speeches in this collection emphasize some key analytical notions in what has been termed an interactional or activity field conception of community. Among the ideas emphasized are the complexity/integration and the coordination/integration of community structure and the coordinating association and the service agency as key organizations in community development. The four papers are titled and sub-titled as follows: (1) "Community Development: Dialectics in Practice and Theory" (Technology and Community Structure; Community Structures and Processes; Multiple Fields and Goal-Structure Interaction; Community Coordination and Development Models); (2) "Two Basic Structures in the Development of the Modern Community" (Community Coordinating Structures; The Service Agency; Basic Structures, Development Models, and Goal Attainment); (3) "The Multi-County Area as a Community" (The Social Field Perspective; The Emerging Rural-Urban Locality; Two or More Fields in a Multicounty Area; Type of Field and Nature of Integration; Integration of the Multicounty Area); (4) "The Community Association and Comprehensive Development" (Structural Dimensions; New Structures and Projects; The Coordination of Organization; Use of External Resources; Local Development and Community Theory). 2ERIC ED520961: Experiences Of Learning And Teaching Mathematics: Using Activity Theory To Understand Tensions In Practice

By

This paper originates from a larger qualitative study exploring how teachers incorporate the affective domain into the primary mathematics classroom. This paper analyses teacher's experiences of mathematics and explores, using activity theory, how these experiences impact their teaching. An important factor to emerge from the data was teacher's own experiences learning mathematics and how this shaped their mathematical identity. (Contains 1 figure.) Proceedings of the Annual Conference of the Mathematics Education Research Group of Australasia (33rd, Freemantle, Western Australia, Australia, July 3-7, 2010)," see ED520764.]

3ERIC EJ1104804: Activity Theory In Information Systems Research And Practice: Theoretical Underpinnings For An Information Systems Development Model

By

Introduction: The purpose of information systems is to facilitate work activities: here we consider how Activity Theory can be applied in information systems development. Method. The requirements for an analytical model for emancipatory, work-oriented information systems research and practice are specified. Previous research work in Activity Theory is then elaborated to satisfy these requirements in parallel with practical applications. Elaboration: Activity Analysis and Development (ActAD) which sees work activity as a systemic entity, its constituent elements and networks of activities, is introduced and the information systems viewpoint is applied throughout the elaboration. Information systems development is modelled as an activity, applying the ActAD framework. Results: Our contribution is a participatory development model called the Activity Driven ISD Model, aimed at developing work and information systems in parallel, in three phases: understanding the present state of an activity; describing the goal state of the activity; and planning for the transformation to the goal state. Conclusion: The ActAD framework and the Activity Driven ISD Model meet six of the seven criteria set. The seventh requirement will be satisfied after the finalisation of the model. The experiences in our pilot studies concerning its applicability to the practitioners have been encouraging.
