2Shared Identity And Political Persuasiveness Across The Political Spectrum
By Asha Worsteling
The success of leaders ultimately depends on their ability to attract and maintain a loyal following. I propose that the success of such leaders depends on their ability to form a sense of shared identity with their followers. I will explore how leaders create a shared identity with followers to foster loyal followership and further explore conditions where this process fails. I will explore this in the context of political leaders who generally sit on either the left or right of the political spectrum and how audiences with different and similar values perceive a shared sense of identity. As such, posing the following question: Does the use of inclusive language increase the persuasiveness of a politician’s message by instilling a sense of shared identity, even if the politician is on the other side of the political spectrum?

3Embodiment Of Manipulation-based Knowledge Of Object Concepts Across The Autism Spectrum: Evidence From Eye-tracking
By Charles P. Davis, Gitte H. Joergensen, Eiling Yee, Inge-Marie Eigsti and Roisin Healy
This plan was created on April 1, 2019, but not formally registered until May 10, 2020. We outline specifically where we have deviated from the original plan. The original plan is available by request (https://docs.google.com/document/d/1Z1IJhWZ6Wcaf6t6Ju3WK6kguZD_luwBpe22dIjtSoAA/edit?usp=sharing). Please request access to see full version history. When a concept is experienced, its semantic features are primed. This activation of features leads to priming effects for later experiences of the same concept. Therefore, when primed with the word green, a picture of a cucumber in an array of red objects will be processed more quickly in the brain because of the earlier exposure to the green. During language comprehension, priming effects can be observed in an object identification task when one object influences a response to a subsequent object with similar semantic features. This study will look at semantic manipulation features, such as the rotation of one's hand while using a screwdriver. Evidence for the activation of manipulation features was found in Myung et al.’s (2006) eye-tracking study. They showed that being presented typewriter can prime piano because of similar finger manipulations. Additionally, it was discovered that participants with apraxia, a disorder that involves motor deficits, did not show the same manipulation effect (Myung et al. 2010). In this study, adults with high versus low autism traits (as measured by the AQ) will perform an object identification task while their eye movements are tracked. This study will test if the overlap of conceptual representations in manipulation features of objects activates the same priming effects in adults with high ASD traits, as measured by the Autism-Spectrum Quotient (AQ; Baron-Cohen et al., 2001). Differences between participants with high AQ versus low AQ scores in the activation of specific semantic features should be evident during this task, with the high-scoring AQ participants looking less to the manipulation-related items (i.e. the target word “lighter”) when primed with its analogous pair (i.e. “stopwatch”).

5Resting-state Effective Connectivity Across The Psychosis Spectrum
By Daniel J. Hauke, Felice Loi and Rick Adams
Diagnosis of mental illness remains challenging due to a lack of biological foundations. Resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI) in conjunction with machine learning can improve this process by uncovering hidden neural signatures of psychotic disorders. In this study we aim to investigate effective connectivity changes across psychosis-spectrum disorders (schizophrenia, schizoaffective disorder, and psychotic bipolar disorder), and healthy controls in a large sample of individuals (N = 1160) from the Bipolar-Schizophrenia Network on Intermediate Phenotypes (B-SNIP) project and previously identified biotypes during resting-state fMRI to identify transdiagnostic biological mechanisms of across the psychosis spectrum. rs-fMRI data from the B-SNIP project will be extracted from bilateral A1, superior temporal gyri, and inferior frontal gyri, and modelled with spectral Dynamic Causal Modelling. Group differences in effective connectivity will be assessed with parametric empirical Bayes while effective connectivity will be used as features to classify diagnostic groups and previously derived biotypes (Meda et al., 2016) to test how well diagnostic groups and biotypes can be distinguished based on effective connectivity at the single-subject level. Additional analyses will be carried out to investigate the correlation between effective connectivity parameters and positive and negative symptoms of illness in patients grouped by DSM-IV (American Psychiatric Association, 2000) diagnosis and by biotypes.

8DTIC ADA620866: Digitizing Consumption Across The Operational Spectrum
By Defense Technical Information Center
U.S. Marine Corps logisticians and operational planners must simultaneously plan for the sustainment of current operations while planning for future operations. Currently, this process is hindered by the manual correlation of force consumption data from electronic and hardcopy documents. In order to refine this process, this thesis presents a process for converting, analyzing, and storing these documents in an electronic format. In order to aid in the conversion process, three optical character recognition (OCR) applications are compared: an open-source and freely-available online application, Microsoft OneNote , and Nuance OmniPage . Two data extraction programs were created and compared to assess the feasibility of automating the analysis phase. The first program concentrated on automated analysis with user review at the end. The second program concentrated on continual user interaction throughout the entire process. The results of these comparisons advocate the use of professional-grade OCR software such as OmniPage to create a standard file that can be accepted as an input by a data extraction program. Based on the consumption documents reviewed by this thesis, a manual data extraction program is advised to create a universal output format for later use in an appropriate data storage method.

9Investigating The Inverse Relationship Between Hippocampal And Caudate Nucleus Volume Across The Lifespan And Cognitive Health Spectrum And Extending The Investigation To Relevant Brain Regions Involved In Navigation
By Alana Muller and Denise Head
Research in the past has highlighted an inverse association between hippocampal and caudate volumes in younger and older adults (Bohbot et al., 2007; Sodums & Bohbot, 2020) with some additional evidence in Alzheimer’s disease (Persson et al., 2018). These observations were interpreted as indicative of competitive interactions between two spatial navigation/memory systems supported by these structures, with the hippocampus underlying place-learning and allocentric navigation (using world-referenced coordinates to navigate) and the caudate nucleus underlying response-learning which is similar to egocentric navigation (using self-reference coordinates to navigate; Ekstrom et al., 2014; Ekstrom et al., 2017; Packard & Mcgaugh, 1996). However, the previous studies analyzing such relationships were based on relatively small sample sizes, had limited investigation of the possibility of this competitive relationship existing with other brain regions, and did not incorporate longitudinal analyses. In addition, one study (Persson et al., 2018) suggested that there may be an initial increase in caudate volume in aging, as a compensatory mechanism for hippocampal atrophy, followed by caudate atrophy during the progression of Alzheimer’s disease (AD). Thus, our primary research goals are to a) determine whether we can replicate the inverse association between hippocampal and caudate volume in multiple samples across the lifespan and the AD spectrum; and b) determine whether the inverse association extends to other brain regions in the networks supporting the two navigation/memory systems again across the healthy lifespan and the AD spectrum; and c) examine longitudinal trajectories of the caudate nucleus, hippocampus and their ratio in older adults and across AD spectrum. Full details can be found in the attached preregistration document.

10Characteristics And Perceptions Of Testimony Provided By Witnesses With Autism Spectrum Disorder Across The Lifespan
By Tori Holland
The current review examines the narrative and episodic memory characteristics (amount, coherence and accuracy/suggestibility) of eyewitness testimony in individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) compared to neurotypical (NT) peers across the lifespan. The current review also evaluates perceptions of testimony (credibility, defendant guilt and culpability) individuals have about individuals with ASD as perpetrators and witnesses to crimes compared to NT peers across the lifespan. Finally, the current review evaluates developmental trends and whether there is alignment between the literature on narrative and episodic memory characteristics and perceptions of testimony in individuals with ASD.

11Neurocognitive Networks In SCD And Across The Dementia Risk Spectrum: Investigating The Multivariate Associations Between Brain And Cognitive Measures
By Nicholas Grunden and Natalie Phillips
This project focuses on the brain-behavior relationships within subjective cognitive decline (SCD), a clinical condition where individuals report memory and thinking difficulties despite normal performance on cognitive tests. SCD is increasingly considered a potential early risk factor for further cognitive decline and dementia, but understanding the relationships between reported cognitive changes and possible underlying brain changes remains a challenge in this clinical state. The study will examine how structural brain changes — specifically, hippocampal volume (HV) and white matter hyperintensities (WMHs) — relate to cognitive measures in individuals with SCD. Prior research suggests that, while individuals with SCD may not perform worse on tests than cognitively unimpaired (CU) adults, they may still exhibit distinct brain-behavior associations compared to their CU peers, making these changes in association potentially useful indicators of underlying neurocognitive changes occurring at the SCD stage. Using psychometric network analysis, this study will map the conditional relationships between brain structures and cognitive domains (e.g., memory, executive function, processing speed) in SCD. This approach allows us to capture complex dynamics between various cognitive abilities and brain integrity that traditional methods may miss. Our study will then compare the SCD network to different non-clinical (CU) and clinical groups (mild cognitive impairment and Alzheimer’s disease) to investigate how these relationships compare across the dementia risk spectrum. Primary outcomes will include: (1) Identifying relationships between neurostructural and cognitive measures in the SCD group. (2) Clarifying how these neurocognitive associations in the SCD network differ from other clinical groups, particularly the CU group. Exploratory analyses will also investigate how factors like sex and APOE genetic status influence brain-behavior relationships in SCD, aiming to better understand its heterogeneity.

The vision of the TRANSCENDENT (Transforming Research by Assessing Neuroinformatics across the Spectrum of Concussion by Embedding iNterdisciplinary Data-collection to Enable Novel Treatments) Concussion Research Program is to be a global centre of excellence in concussion research that will transform clinical care. This will be achieved by leveraging a learning health system that integrates the application of novel, innovative assessments, including physiological evaluations, fluid biomarkers and advanced neuroimaging. Using extensive, validated, rigorous data-collection methods standardized across clinic sites collected routinely by interdisciplinary providers, we will assess concussion across the spectrum of disease. We will expand our existing large data registry and link with other datasets to answer pressing clinical questions about diagnosis, management, and treatment across the spectrum of concussion. Research participants will consent to the use of de-identified clinical data, collected at 360 Concussion Care, being used for research purposes and shared with research organizations – the CHEO Research Institute and the Ontario Brain Institute (OBI). For Ontario patients, health card number (OHIP) will also be collected to be linked to other research datasets. The TRANSCENDENT concussion research program is primarily funded by the Ontario Brain Institute’s Integrated Discovery Program. Additional funding is provided by the Canada First Research Excellence Fund for the Brain-Heart Interconnectome.

14Ep207 - Dr. Temple Grandin | The Autistic Brain: Thinking Across The Spectrum
By Talks at Google
When Temple Grandin was born in 1947, autism had only just been named. Today it is more prevalent than ever, with one in 88 children diagnosed on the spectrum. Our thinking about it has undergone a transformation in her lifetime: Autism studies have moved from the realm of psychology to neurology and genetics, and there is far more hope today than ever before thanks to groundbreaking new research into causes and treatments. Now, Dr. Temple Grandin reports from the forefront of autism science, bringing her singular perspective to a thrilling journey into the heart of the autism revolution. Weaving her own experience with remarkable new discoveries, Grandin introduces the neuroimaging advances and genetic research that link brain science to behavior, even sharing her own brain scan to show us which differences might explain common symptoms. We meet the scientists and self-advocates who are exploring innovative theories of what causes autism and how we can diagnose and best treat it. Grandin also highlights long-ignored sensory problems and the transformative effects we can have by treating autism symptom by symptom, rather than with an umbrella diagnosis. She argues that raising and educating kids on the spectrum isn't just a matter of focusing on their weaknesses; in the science that reveals their long-overlooked strengths, she shows us new ways to foster their unique contributions. 22Supersymmetry Across The Light And Heavy-Light Hadronic Spectrum II
By Hans Gunter Dosch, Guy F. de Teramond and Stanley J. Brodsky
We extend our analysis of the implications of hadronic supersymmetry for heavy-light hadrons in light-front holographic QCD. Although conformal symmetry is strongly broken by the heavy quark mass, supersymmetry and the holographic embedding of semiclassical light-front dynamics derived from five-dimensional anti-de Sitter (AdS) space nevertheless determines the form of the confining potential in the light-front Hamiltonian to be harmonic. The resulting light-front bound-state equations lead to a heavy-light Regge-like spectrum for both mesons and baryons. The confinement hadron mass scale and their Regge slopes depend, however, on the mass of the heavy quark in the meson or baryon as expected from Heavy Quark Effective Theory (HQET). This procedure reproduces the observed spectra of heavy-light hadrons with good precision and makes predictions for yet unobserved states.

2325-Hydroxyvitamin D In Obese Youth Across The Spectrum Of Glucose Tolerance From Normal To Prediabetes To Type 2 Diabetes.
By de las Heras, Javier, Rajakumar, Kumaravel, Lee, SoJung, Bacha, Fida, Holick, Michael F. and Arslanian, Silva A.
This article is from Diabetes Care , volume 36 . Abstract OBJECTIVE: To 1) determine if plasma 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25[OH]D) concentrations differ among obese youth with normal glucose tolerance (NGT) versus prediabetes versus type 2 diabetes and 2) assess the relationships between 25(OH)D and in vivo insulin sensitivity and β-cell function in this cohort. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: Plasma 25(OH)D concentrations were examined in banked specimens in 9- to 20-year-old obese youth (n = 175; male 42.3%, black 46.3%) (NGT, n = 105; impaired glucose tolerance [IGT], n = 43; type 2 diabetes, n = 27) who had in vivo insulin sensitivity and secretion measured by hyperinsulinemic-euglycemic and hyperglycemic clamp techniques and had an assessment of total body composition and abdominal adiposity. RESULTS: The mean age and BMI of the subjects were 14.3 ± 2.1 years and 35.7 ± 5.6 kg/m2, respectively. BMI, plasma 25(OH)D, and the proportion of vitamin D–deficient and –insufficient children did not differ across the three groups. Furthermore, there was no association between 25(OH)D and in vivo insulin sensitivity or β-cell function relative to insulin sensitivity (disposition index) in all groups combined or in each group separately. CONCLUSIONS: Our data in obese youth show 1) no differences in plasma 25(OH)D concentrations across the glucose tolerance groups and 2) no relationship between 25(OH)D and in vivo insulin sensitivity and β-cell function relative to insulin sensitivity in any of the groups. It remains uncertain if enhancement of the vitamin D status could improve pathophysiological mechanisms of prediabetes and type 2 diabetes in obese youth.

26Magnetospheres Of Massive Stars Across The EM Spectrum
By V. Petit, S. P. Owocki, M. E. Oksala and the MiMeS Collaboration
Magnetic massive stars -- which are being discovered with increasing frequency -- represent a new category of wind-shaping mechanism for O and B stars. Magnetic channeling of these stars' radiation-driven winds, the Magnetically Confined Wind Shock paradigm, leads to the formation of a shock-heated magnetosphere, which can radiate X-rays, modify UV resonance lines, and create disks of Halpha emitting material. The dynamical properties of these magnetospheres are well understood from a theoretical point of view as an interplay between the magnetic wind confinement and rotation. However, the manifestations of magnetospheres across the spectrum may be more complex and various than first anticipated. On the other hand, recent advances in modeling these magnetospheres provide a key to better understand massive star winds in general. We will summarize the coordinated observational, theoretical, and modeling efforts from the Magnetism in Massive Star Project, addressing key outstanding questions regarding magnetosphere manifestations across the spectral domain.

27On The Location Of The Gamma-ray Emission In The 2008 Outburst In The BL Lacertae Object AO 0235+164 Through Observations Across The Electromagnetic Spectrum

We present observations of a major outburst at centimeter, millimeter, optical, X-ray, and gamma-ray wavelengths of the BL Lacertae object AO 0235+164. We analyze the timing of multi-waveband variations in the flux and linear polarization, as well as changes in Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA) images at 7mm with 0.15 milliarcsecond resolution. The association of the events at different wavebands is confirmed at high statistical significance by probability arguments and Monte-Carlo simulations. A series of sharp peaks in optical linear polarization, as well as a pronounced maximum in the 7 mm polarization of a superluminal jet knot, indicate rapid fluctuations in the degree of ordering of the magnetic field. These results lead us to conclude that the outburst occurred in the jet both in the quasi-stationary "core" and in the superluminal knot, both parsecs downstream of the supermassive black hole. We interpret the outburst as a consequence of the propagation of a disturbance, elongated along the line of sight by light-travel time delays, that passes through a standing recollimation shock in the core and propagates down the jet to create the superluminal knot. The multi-wavelength light curves vary together on long time-scales (months/years), but the correspondence is poorer on shorter time-scales. This, as well as the variability of the polarization and the dual location of the outburst, agrees with the expectations of a multi-zone emission model in which turbulence plays a major role in modulating the synchrotron and inverse Compton fluxes.

29DTIC ADA600257: Human Electro-Muscular Incapacitation (HEMI) Use In The Military/Applicability Across The Full Spectrum Of Operations
By Defense Technical Information Center
HEMI is currently fielded in each of the military branches of the armed forces but in a limited way that is mostly constrained to military policing type functions. The technology itself, like all non-lethal systems, is not without its risks and limitations. HEMI technology does not substitute for lethal force when that need exists; however, it does give the warfighter an ability to incapacitate without the strategic implications that occur from wrongful death or serious injury when deadly force is used. The technology has a place in any situation of uncertainty, especially in a counterinsurgency. Every individual involved in normal combat operations should be issued a HEMI system, as it can have positive use no matter the type of battlefield. HEMI technology will give our front line warrior better tools to effectively carry out their job and positively contribute to the strategic goals of the United States.

30DTIC ADA464526: Effects-Based Operations: Success Across The Spectrum Of Conflict
By Defense Technical Information Center
Although effects-based operations (EBO) is not a new concept for waging war, it is rarely thought of as a methodology that can be applied across the spectrum of conflict to achieve national security objectives. This paper argues that the EBO methodology should be used as the joint standard to ensure success for America in symmetric and asymmetric conflicts. By first analyzing trends in the world's political environment, this paper will show the necessity of harnessing all instruments of national power in an integrated effort to defeat our adversaries. Second, this paper will highlight how EBO has taken hold as the joint standard, although doctrine and training has been slow in documenting progress across the services. Third, this paper will look at the steady development of EBO since Gulf War I while focusing on the lessons learned from that conflict, OPERATION IRAQI FREEDOM and OPERATION ENDURING FREEDOM. Last, this paper will discuss the future of American combat and the prospect for winning America's wars with EBO.

31Individual Differences In Generalizing Fear Extinction Learning Across The Spectrum Of Trait Anxiety.
By Edgar Nazarenus, Jan Richter and Eva-Lotta Brakemeier
Exposure-based cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) is currently the most recommended treatment choice for anxiety disorders (Bandelow et al., 2021). However, a substantial number of patients fail to benefit or experience a return of fear after treatment (Vervliet et al., 2013). The inhibitory model of exposure therapy suggests extinction learning to be a relevant mechanism of change (Craske et al., 2012). Extinction learning involves different memory processes that might affect fear reduction, including memory acquisition, (re ) consolidation, recall, retention, and generalization. Given the limited dose available during psychotherapeutic treatments, transfer of extinction learning to feared cues and contexts not considered during guided exercises is critical for long-lasting and effective treatment outcomes. However, contemporary science knows little about the specific process of fear extinction generalization. Therefore, this study investigates the existence of extinction generalization gradients, as already demonstrated in fear learning (e. g. Lissek et al., 2008). Three groups of 25 healthy subjects, each exhibiting low, moderate, and high levels of trait anxiety as assessed by the trait subscale of the State-Trait-Anxiety-Inventory (STAI; Lothar Laux, 1981), respectively, are examined and compared to a sample of 25 patients with anxiety disorders. All subjects will participate in two newly developed paradigms – one is tailored to investigate fear extinction generalization across a fear conditioned and extinguished cue, a fear conditioned and non-extinguished cue, a non-conditioned safety cue, and several generalization cues; the other is adapted to study context-related extinction generalization, meaning the recall of extinction learning in several generalization contexts similar to the presented context during extinction training. Both experimental protocols include instructed fear acquisition on day 1 followed by an extinction training and generalization test 24-hours later on day 2 and another generalization re-test 24-hours later on day 3.

33DTIC ADA261200: The Effects Of Raman Scattering Across The Visible Spectrum In Clear Ocean Water: A Monte Carlo Study
By Defense Technical Information Center
This report documents the effects of water Raman scattering activity in clear ocean waters for the visible spectrum. The mode of study is a Monte Carlo simulation utilizing the accepted physical properties of the water molecule and minimal amounts of suspended matter. This Raman scattering activity has a significant effect on the upwelling irradiance in air and on the properties of the submarine light field in the surface layers. At wavelengths greater than 500 nm the water Raman activity significantly affects the submarine light field at depth.

34DTIC ADA366270: Naval Gunfire Support To Amphibious Operations Across The Spectrum Of Conflict.
By Defense Technical Information Center
The United States strategic environment has changed drastically in the past ten years. As a result of numerous, complex factors, the United States carried out a significant redeployment and retrenchment of its military forces. Ironically, as the United States reduced and withdrew its military forces, the threats to national security have become more numerous and more uncertain, thereby increasing the need for the United States to maintain a capability to project power across the oceans. This paper uses three illustrative scenarios in which amphibious forces perform missions representing the spectrum of conflict, to determine the amphibious forces' requirements for support. The capabilities of naval gunfire assets are then determined and compared against the support requirements to determine if their capabilities meet the requirements. Where the capabilities fall short of meeting the requirements, the capabilities of other supporting agencies are then examined to determine if other agencies can compensate for the shortfalls of naval gunfire. Finally, the net shortfalls and their impact on the abilities of the NCA and Unified Commanders to achieve the national security objectives are determined.

35A Complete Model Of The CR Spectrum And Composition Across The Galactic To Extragalactic Transition
By Noemie Globus, Denis Allard and Etienne Parizot
We present a complete phenomenological model accounting for the evolution of the cosmic-ray spectrum and composition with energy, based on the available data over the entire spectrum. We show that there is no need to postulate any additional component, other than one single Galactic component depending on rigidity alone, and one extragalactic component, whose characteristics are similar to those derived from a study of particle acceleration at mildly relativistic shocks in a GRB environment (Globus et al., 2015). In particular, we show that the resulting cosmic ray spectrum and composition satisfy the various constraints derived from the current data in the Galactic/extragalactic transition region, notably from the measurements of KASCADE Grande and Auger. Finally, we derive some generic features that a working phenomenological scenario may exhibit to give a global account of the cosmic ray data with a minimum number of free parameters.

36Associations Between Smoking To Relieve Stress, Motivation To Stop And Future Quit Attempts Across The Social Spectrum: A Population Survey In England
By Olga Perski, Maria Theodoraki, Sharon Cox, Loren Kock, Lion Shahab and Jamie Brown
Smoking prevalence is declining in England but remains persistently high in ‘lower’ socioeconomic position (SEP) groups compared with more advantaged groups. Smoking is a significant contributor to health and social inequalities. There is therefore an urgent need to identify factors that underpin this disparity and use this information to inform public health policies and smoking cessation interventions tailored to the needs of lower SEP groups. Lower SEP is associated with multiple stressors, including financial insecurity, ill health and reduced social capital, with lower SEP smokers experiencing greater nicotine dependence and therefore greater negative affect from withdrawal. Although research indicates that smoking to relieve stress is a commonly endorsed motive overall, it is unclear whether this is more pronounced in lower (compared with higher) SEP groups and if so, whether this has a negative impact on motivation to stop and future quit attempts. We therefore aim to examine whether smoking to relieve stress is associated with motivation to stop and attempts to quit in the next 12 months, and whether these associations are moderated by SEP. This will be an observational study, with cross-sectional and prospective survey data from the nationally representative Smoking Toolkit Study in England.

38Does Why We Drink Matter? Exploring The Role Of Drinking Motives In The Consumption Of No- And Low-alcohol Across The Sociodemographic Spectrum
By Lucy C Burke, Colin Angus and Inge Kersbergen
The study aims to determine the degree to which age, sex, and socioeconomic status are directly associated with the consumption of no and low-alcohol (NoLo) drinks. The UK government specifies these drinks as being below <1.2% ABV (Department for Health and Social Care, 2018). It will further contribute to the scientific literature on NoLo by exploring whether these sociodemographic characteristics also indirectly influence consumption of NoLo via their association with drinking motives. The methods include building a structural equation model to explore whether the reasons people drink alcohol (drinking motives) provide indirect pathways which partially mediate relationships between sociodemographic characteristics (socioeconomic status, age, and gender) and NoLo consumption. The drinking motives explored in the study are based on Cooper’s (1994) and Grant et al’s (2007) work, capturing drinking for the following reasons: social, conformity, enhancement, coping-depression, coping-anxiety.

39Metallicity Indicators Across The Spectrum Of Composite Stellar Populations
By Claudia S. Moeller, Uta Fritze v. - Alvensleben and Klaus J. Fricke
With a chemically consistent evolutionary synthesis approach we follow the enrichment of individual chemical elements in the ISM. We describe the time With a chemically consistent evolutionary synthesis approach we follow the enrichment of individual chemical elements in the ISM. We describe the time evolution of broad band colors U to K and metal indices (Fe5335, Fe5270, Mg2, Mgb), taking into account the increasing initial metallicities of successive generations of stars. Using specific star formation prescriptions for the different spectral types of galaxies, we show our model galaxy broad band colors, synthetic spectra, and ISM abundances are in agreement with observations of nearby samples and template galaxies of the respective spectral types. We compare our synthetic Mg2 indices with observations and study the time evolution of the stellar index [MgFe] for composite elliptical galaxy models and for simple stellar populations of various metallicities. We show how the luminosity weighted stellar metallicity indicators in different wavelength bands from U to K compare to each other for the various star formation histories and how they evolve in time. We analyse as a function of wavelength the luminosity contributions of stellar subpopulations with different metallicities in the various galaxy types. The relations between luminosity weighted stellar metallicity indicators in different passbands, stellar absorption indices and ISM abundances are shown to depend significantly on the star formation history and evolutionary stage.

40ERIC ED445162: Student Voices Across The Spectrum: The Educational Integration Initiatives Project.
By ERIC
The Educational Integration Initiatives Project (EIIP) was a multidisciplinary study designed to explore the complexities of the interaction of race and education. The EIIP also evaluated how the environment in which students are educated affects their educational performance and personal development. The study begins with a history of the relationship between race and education in the United States including the value of public education and the contention surrounding segregation, desegregation, and integration. An analysis follows of student, teacher, and administrator interviews from the 10 urban schools participating in the EIIP. Between 6 and 12 student interviews were conducted at each school, and interviews were also held with 4 or 5 teachers and administrators from each school. No school that participated in the EIIP was truly integrated as the researchers defined integration. None of these desegregated schools was providing its students with a truly multicultural education in a learning environment that was inclusive and supportive of various student learning styles and that prepared students of all races to continue to higher education and to interact successfully in a multicultural society. Still, students attending the more desegregated schools enjoyed educational advantages that were not available to the students in the racially isolated schools. Recommendations are made to begin a transformative process toward true integration. (Contains 193 endnotes.) (SLD)

42Digitizing Consumption Across The Operational Spectrum
By Branham, Andrew R.
U.S.Marine Corps logisticians and operational planners must simultaneously plan for the sustainment of current operations while planning for future operations. Currently, this process is hindered by the manual correlation of force consumption data from electronic and hardcopy documents. In order to refine this process, this thesis presents a process for converting, analyzing, and storing these documents in an electronic format. In order to aid in the conversion process, three optical character recognition (OCR) applications are compared: an open-source and freely-available online application, Microsoft OneNote®, and Nuance OmniPage®. Two data extraction programs were created and compared to assess the feasibility of automating the analysis phase. The first program concentrated on automated analysis with user review at the end. The second program concentrated on continual user interaction throughout the entire process. The results of these comparisons advocate the use of professional-grade OCR software such as OmniPage® to create a standard file that can be accepted as an input by a data extraction program. Based on the consumption documents reviewed by this thesis, a manual data extraction program is advised to create a universal output format for later use in an appropriate data storage method.

47Impact Of Huntington's Across The Entire Disease Spectrum: The Phases And Stages Of Disease From The Patient Perspective.
By Ho, AK and Hocaoglu, MB
This article is from Clinical Genetics , volume 80 . Abstract Ho AK, Hocaoglu MB for the European Huntington's Disease Network Quality of Life Working Group. Impact of Huntington disease across the entire disease spectrum: the phases and stages of disease from the patient perspective.Although Huntington's disease (HD) is a neurodegenerative disease characterized by motor, cognitive and behavioural disturbances, there has been little empirical data examining what patients are most concerned about throughout the different stages of disease, which can span many years. Semi-structured face-to-face interviews were individually conducted with 31 people living with different stages of Huntington's, from pre-clinical gene carriers to advanced stage. We examined how often participants raised issues and concerns regarding the impact of Huntington's on everyday life. The Physical/functional theme hardly featured pre-clinically, but was strongly present from Stage 1, rose steadily and peaked at Stage 5. There were no significant changes between stages for the Emotional, Social, and Self themes that all featured across all stages, indicating that these issues were not raised more frequently over the course of the disease. Likewise, the more rarely mentioned Financial and Legal themes also remained similar across stages. However, the Cognitive theme only featured between Stages 1 and 4, and hardly at all pre-clinically and at Stage 5. These findings provide insight into patients' important and unique perspective and have implications for the management and development of interventions across the spectrum of HD stages.Section Editor: Aad Tibben, email: [email protected]

MEMORIAL ADDRESSES AND OTHER TRIBUTES FOR TED STEVENS Proceedings in the Senate Thursday, August 12, 2010 prayer The Chaplain, Dr. Barry C. Black, offered the following prayer: Let us pray. Fountain of life and source of all goodness, You make all things and fill them with Your blessings. You created us to rejoice in the splendor of Your radiance. Help our Senators today to nurture the inner light of Your presence in their lives. Enable them to hear Your still small voice calling them to embrace Your wisdom and to follow Your leadership. Lord, we commend to You former Senator Ted Stevens. We thank You for his life and legacy and acknowledge that we are diminished by his sudden and unexpected death. We are grateful for his wisdom, dedication, patriotism, courage, and service. Comfort his family and all who mourn. We pray in Your merciful Name. Amen. MOMENT OF SILENCE Mr. SCHUMER. Mr. President, I ask unanimous consent that the Senate observe a moment of silence in memory of our former colleague, the late Senator from Alaska, Ted Stevens. The ACTING PRESIDENT pro tempore. Without objection, it is so ordered. (Moment of silence.) Mr. SCHUMER. Mr. President, I ask unanimous consent that the Senate proceed to the immediate consideration of S. Res. 617, submitted earlier today. The ACTING PRESIDENT pro tempore. Without objection, the clerk will report the resolution by title. The legislative clerk read as follows: A resolution (S. Res. 617) relative to the death of the Honorable Theodore ''Ted'' Fulton Stevens, former Senator for the State of Alaska. There being no objection, the Senate proceeded to consider the resolution. Mr. SCHUMER. Mr. President, I would like to take this opportunity, and I think I speak on behalf of all of our colleagues, certainly in sentiment if not my exact words, about our friend and former colleague, Ted Stevens. On Tuesday we were all deeply saddened to learn about his tragic passing. Ted's dedication to his Nation began with his valiant service in World War II and endured through six decades of public service. Ted helped secure statehood for his beloved Alaska and never stopped fighting for the people of the Pioneer State for over 40 years as its senior Senator. Our thoughts are with Ted's wife Catherine and the entire Stevens family and all of those who lost their lives and were injured in this week's sad accident. Mr. President, I want to personally add the thoughts of Senator Reid. I spoke with him last night. We spoke about Senator Stevens and remembered him fondly. Senator Reid particularly noted to me one of his prize possessions was a Hulk tie that Senator Stevens had given him, and he proudly still has it with him. Mr. McCONNELL. Mr. President, in the history of our country, no one man has done more for one State than Ted Stevens. His commitment to the people of Alaska and his Nation spanned decades, and he left a lasting mark on both. From his early military service as a pilot in World War II, to his involvement in the statehood of the Last Frontier, to his fierce support and defense of our Nation's military, Ted Stevens was always there, fighting for what he believed in, and usually winning. He was a force to be reckoned with, and we will miss him greatly. We extend our deepest sympathies to Catherine and the entire Stevens family, and to the families of the friends who were lost in this terrible accident. Mr. SCHUMER. I ask unanimous consent that the resolution be agreed to, the preamble be agreed to, the motions to reconsider be laid on the table en bloc, and that any statements relating to the resolution be printed in the Record. The ACTING PRESIDENT pro tempore. Without objection, it is so ordered. The resolution (S. Res. 617) was agreed to. The preamble was agreed to. The resolution, with its preamble, reads as follows: S. Res. 617 Whereas Theodore ''Ted'' Fulton Stevens, who began serving in the Senate 8 years after Alaska was admitted to Statehood, represented the people of the State of Alaska with distinction in the Senate from 1968 to 2009 and played a significant role in the transformation of the State of Alaska from an impoverished territory to a full- fledged State through the assistance he provided in building energy facilities, hospitals and clinics, roads, docks, ferry terminals and airports, water and sewer facilities, schools, and other community facilities in the State of Alaska, which earned him recognition as ''Alaskan of the Century'' from the Alaska Legislature in 2000; Whereas Ted Stevens distinguished himself as a transport pilot during World War II in support of the ''Flying Tigers'' of the Army Air Forces, flying supplies to China over the treacherous ''Hump'' route in the eastern Himalayan mountains and earning 2 Distinguished Flying Crosses and other decorations for his skill and bravery; Whereas Ted Stevens, after serving as a United States Attorney in the territory of Alaska, came to Washington, District of Columbia in 1956 to serve in the Eisenhower Administration in the Department of the Interior, where he was a leading force in securing the legislation that led to the admission of Alaska as the 49th State on January 3, 1959, and then as Solicitor of the Department of the Interior; Whereas, in 1961, Ted Stevens returned to the State of Alaska and, in 1964, was elected to the Alaska House of Representatives, where he was subsequently elected as Speaker pro tempore and majority leader until his appointment to the Senate to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Senator E.L. White Physical Education Program (20 U.S.C. 7261 et seq.); Whereas Ted Stevens unconditionally supported the needs of the Armed Forces of the United States through visits to soldiers, sailors, airmen, and marines in ever[y] major military conflict and war zone where United States military personnel have been assigned, including Vietnam, Kuwait, Bosnia, Kosovo, Iraq, and Afghanistan, and in his role as Chairman and Ranking Member of the Subcommittee on Defense Appropriations for more than 20 years; and Whereas Ted Stevens was well respected for reaching across the aisle to forge bipartisan alliances and enjoyed many close friendships with colleagues in both political parties and with his staff, who were deeply loyal to him: Now, therefore, be it Resolved, That Date(s) Held: 2010-08-12, 2010-09-15, 2010-09-20, 2010-01-03, 2010-09-27, 2010-09-28, 2010-09-29, 2010-11-17, 2010-11-15, 2010-11-17, 2010-12-09, 2010-12-14, 2010-09-29 111th Congress, 2nd Session GPO Document Source: CHRG-111shrg61600 Related Items: United States House Concurrent Resolution 307 (111th Congress) United States Senate Resolution 617 (111th Congress) United States Senate Bill 3802 (111th Congress) U.S. Code: 16 U.S.C. 1801et seq. Ted was born in Indianapolis, IN, and was raised by his grandmother. When he was 13 he moved to Manhattan Beach, CA, where he lived with his aunt and uncle. Having promised his aunt he would not enlist until he was 19, Ted attended Oregon State College for one semester in 1942. On his 19th birthday Ted enlisted in the Marine Air Corps but he failed the eye test. He returned to California to take eye exercises. On March 15, 1943, Ted entered the Army and was assigned to the Army Air Corps. He became a pilot and flew missions in India and China in support of the Flying Tigers of the 14th Air Force. He was awarded numerous medals for his service, including two Distinguished Flying Crosses. After the war, Mr. Stevens completed degrees at UCLA and Harvard Law School. In 1950 he joined a law firm in Washington, DC, where he met his first wife Ann Cherrington. In 1952 Mr. Stevens accepted a position with Combs and Clasby, a law firm in Fairbanks. Later, in 1953 he became U.S. Attorney in Fairbanks. During President Eisenhower's administration, he took a job with the Interior Department in Washington, DC. In that position, he worked with many other Alaskans to push for Alaska statehood and became the Chief Legal Officer (the Solicitor) of Interior. In 1961 Ted returned to Alaska to practice law in Anchorage in the new State of Alaska. He was elected to the Alaska House of Representatives in 1964. In his second term, Mr. Stevens became the House majority leader. Mr. Stevens was appointed to the U.S. Senate in 1968 by then-Governor Walter J. Hickel to fill a vacancy created by the death of Senator E.L. (Bob) Bartlett. Two years later in 1970, Alaskans chose Senator Stevens to finish that term. He was re-elected in 1972, 1978, 1984, 1990, 1996, and 2002. During his service in the Senate, Senator Stevens was instrumental in the passage of the legislation settling Alaska Native land claims, the authorization of the Trans- Alaska Pipeline, transfer of the Alaska Railroad to the State, creating the essential air service program and bypass mail service. He has worked tirelessly to improve health care, communications, and transportation for Alaskans. Ted fought to enact the 200 mile limit to protect Alaska's fisheries. He authored the American Fisheries Act to reduce foreign ownership of Alaska's fisheries and created the Community Development Quota Program to promote economic development in Western Alaska. Ted was a strong supporter of development of Alaska's resources including construction of a gas pipeline and opening the coastal plain of the Arctic National Wildlife Range to oil and gas exploration. He was a national leader on pension reform, women in sports, national security and defense. The Ted Stevens Amateur Sports Act created the U.S. Olympic Committee. The longest serving member of Alaska's congressional delegation, Senator Stevens had more years of service than any other Republican in the U.S. Senate and was the longest serving Senator in the history of the Republican Party. Having served for 4 years as the Senate's President pro tempore, the Presiding Officer in the absence of the Vice President, Senator Stevens also served as the Senate's President pro tempore emeritus; vice chairman of the Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation; cochairman of the Defense Appropriations Subcommittee; and ranking member of the Disaster Recovery Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Subcommittee. He was married to the former Catherine Bittner, a fourth generation Alaskan and lawyer. He has 6 children and 11 grandchildren. His first wife, Ann Cherrington Stevens, was killed in a 1978 airplane crash at the Anchorage Airport. On August 9, 2010, Senator Stevens was among five people who died in an airplane crash north of Dillingham, AK, about 325 miles southwest of Anchorage. ? SCHUMER.
