This paper concerns itself with the problem of estimating the parameters in a one-way and two-way classification model by minimizing the sum of the absolute deviations of the regression function from the observed points. The one-way model reduces to obtaining a set of medians from which optimal parameters can be obtained by simple arithmetic manipulations. The two-way model is transformed into a specially structured linear programming problem and two algorithms are presented to solve this problem. The occurrence of alternative optimal solutions in both models is discussed, and numerical examples are presented. (Author)

Efficient algorithms have been developed recently which utilize the specialized structure of the linear programming formulation for the problem of least absolute value estimation. These algorithms generally proceed in the direction of steepest descent along an edge of a convex polyhedral surface. However, we will show that the extreme point path of steepest descent may not be taken when degeneracy occurs. We will also present a criterion that determines the basic edge for steepest descent. Humans can rationally rank the options according to their preferences, choosing the one with the highest value. One way to achieve rational decision-making is to characterize all items using an absolute scale, where item values are translated into a "common currency" based on the actual number of units presented, i.e., absolute value encodings for options. In addition to absolute encoding, there is considerable evidence in neuroscience and economics that the subjective economic value of an option is often not estimated in isolation, but is highly dependent on the context in which the option is placed. This context-dependent form of relative value encoding may lead to irrational decision-making in certain situations, such as the Ebbinghaus optical illusion. However, the existence of relative value has its rationale: the decision-making process of organisms needs to consider the balance between coding efficiency and cognitive load; Relative coding can use as few cognitive resources as possible to represent item value based on the contextual relationship between options, and improve the discriminability of items. Relative encoding, like absolute encoding, is thus a natural learning mechanism in the human decision-making process. A key recent scientific question about situational decision-making is how to arbitrate absolute and relative coded costs and benefits to optimize decision-making. Previous studies have found that relative and absolute coding can be flexibly switched according to task requirements, but they have ignored that the human brain, as a flexible system, can process this multidimensional information in parallel to assist decision-making. Therefore, we believe that a reasonable hypothesis for this question is that two types of encoded information will be input into a cognitive processing system (i.e., brain) as a function of time, and affect individual value decisions with different weights during the dynamic time response process. Currently, we have recruited 75 effective subjects to complete the behavioral experiments and verify the current hypothesis. We hope to examine whether the brain's processing circuits for the two learning mechanisms are integrated or distributed in the next fMRI experiments.

Abstract This paper proposes two modified generalized Gauss-Seidel iteration techniques to determine the Absolute Value Equations (AVEs). Convergence of the new techniques is established under some appropriate conditions lastly; several numerical examples verify the significance of the techniques.

A method is presented to measure the absolute value of the London penetration depth, $\lambda$, from the frequency shift of a resonator. The technique involves coating a high-$T_c$ superconductor (HTSC) with film of low - Tc material of known thickness and penetration depth. The method is applied to measure London penetration depth in YBa2Cu3O{7-\delta} (YBCO) Bi2Sr2CaCu2O{8+\delta} (BSCCO) and Pr{1.85}Ce{0.15}CuO{4-\delta}$ (PCCO). For YBCO and BSCCO, the values of $\lambda (0)$ are in agreement with the literature values. For PCCO $\lambda \approx 2790$ \AA, reported for the first time.

Recently, a class of inexact Picard iteration method for solving the absolute value equation: $Ax-|x~|=b$ have been proposed in [Optim Lett 8:2191-2202,2014]. To further improve the performance of Picard iteration method, a new inexact Picard iteration method is proposed to solve the absolute value equation. The sufficient conditions for the convergence of the proposed method for the absolute value equation is given. Some numerical experiments are given to demonstrate the effectiveness of the new method.

The zero temperature value of the in-plane London penetration depth, $\lambda_{ab}(0)$, has been measured in single crystals of Ba(Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_x$)$_2$As$_2$ as a function of the Co concentration, $x$, across both the underdoped and overdoped superconducting regions of the phase diagram. For $x\gtrsim0.047$, $\lambda_{ab}(0)$ has been found to have values between 120 $\pm$ 50~nm and 300 $\pm$ 50~nm. A pronounced increase in $\lambda_{ab}(0)$, to a value as high as 950 $\pm$ 50~nm, has been observed for $x\lesssim0.047$, corresponding to the region of the phase diagram where the itinerant antiferromagnetic and superconducting phases coexist and compete. Direct determination of the doping-dependent $\lambda_{ab}(0)$ has allowed us to track the evolution of the temperature-dependent superfluid density, from which we infer the development of a pronounced superconducting gap anisotropy at the edges of the superconducting dome.

Recently, two families of HSS-based iteration methods are constructed for solving the system of absolute value equations (AVEs), which is a class of non-differentiable NP-hard problems. In this study, we establish the Picard-CSCS iteration method and the nonlinear CSCS-like iteration method for AVEs involving the Toeplitz matrix. Then, we analyze the convergence of the Picard-CSCS iteration method for solving AVEs. By using the theory about nonsmooth analysis, we particularly prove the convergence of the nonlinear CSCS-like iterationsolver for AVEs. The advantage of these methods is that they do not require the storage of coefficient matrices at all, and the sub-system of linear equations can be solved efficiently via the fast Fourier transforms (FFTs). Therefore, computational cost and storage can be saved in practical implementations. Numerical examples including numerical solutions of nonlinear fractional diffusion equations are reported to show the effectiveness of the proposed methods in comparison with some existing methods.

The purpose of this paper is to prove that the weighted uni- dimensional similarities problem with least absolute value metric (USPAM) is, in general, NP-Hard. In the first four sections of the paper, the USPAM problem and four lemmas are presented which will be used in Section 6 to prove the main theorem of this paper. It is shown that the simple max cut problem can, in a polynomial number of steps, be converted into a special case of the USPAM problem, which shows that the USPAM problem is NP-Hard. Finally, some special cases of the USPAM problem are described for which polynomial solutions exist.
