Past research has shown that consistent contexts present at encoding and retrieval facilitate recall of encoded information. However, the vast majority of past literature on context-dependent memory focused on learnt word lists and spatial memory has received sparse attention. Therefore, this study aims to examine if virtual reality (VR) can facilitate recall of previously seen objects and their spatial location by providing a replica of the encoding context. Memory of objects and their location will be assessed across three different retrieval contexts: a physical environment that is the same as the encoding context (same room condition), a VR replica of the encoding context (VR room condition), and a novel real-world environment (different room condition). Given VR’s ability to reconstruct scenes that are highly similar to real-world settings, virtual environments modelled after the encoding context are likely to offer sufficient contextual cues for memory retrieval. As such, it is hypothesized that memory performance will be similar across the same room and VR room conditions, and the weakest performance is expected to be observed in the different room condition.
