"Towards A Generalization Of The Adjusted 1/N-rule: Usage Of Aggregated Advice In Groups Of Three And Individuals." Description:
The Internet Archive:
In a previous study, Schultze et al. (2019) proposed the adjusted 1/N rule as a model of advice taking in groups. This model makes accurate predictions about the extent of advice taking in groups receiving advice from an individual. Here, we test whether the adjusted 1/N can be extended to cover cases, in which advice was generated by aggregating the judgements of multiple advisors when working on so called bounded estimation tasks. Bounded estimation tasks are tasks, in which the range of possible values is restricted (e.g., percentage estimates). In this study, we will manipulate both the judge type (individual vs. 3-person groups) and the number of advice pieces (1 vs. 5 vs. 20). The participants will answer 30 percentage estimate tasks either individually or as a group. In the group condition, the participants will be instructed to give individual judgments prior to the group discussion. The level of advice taking will be calculated depending on initial and final estimates to test four hypotheses derived from the following generalized model: ATn = (Na/N + Na) * (ATind/0.5) N: Number of judges Na: Number of pieces of advice in an aggregate ATind: Individual judges' advice taking when receiving a single piece of advice
