The consumption of carbohydrates prior to extra-time has shown to elicit slight improvements in skill performance, but with no impact of physical performance. The performance enhancing benefits of caffeine for intermittent, endurance and resistance exercise has well-established. Different caffeine sources, such as caffeinated gum evoke an increase in performance 5–10 minutes after ingestion with their rapid absorption capabilities perhaps providing a competitive advantage during extra-time. Therefore, the aim of the proposed study is to assess the effect of caffeinated gum on physical performance, skill acquisition and decision-making processes during the extra-time period of football. Participants will complete a 120-min football-specific exercise protocol twice separated by 7 days. Prior to extra-time, participants will consume either caffeinated gum (intervention) or a taste and texture matched gum but containing no caffeine (placebo) in a double-blind, randomised, counterbalanced and crossover fashion. All participants will complete 3 visits to the laboratory. The first visit will be used to fully habituate participants with the experimental procedures and the subsequent two visits will involve completion of a 120-min football-specific exercise protocol. Selected measures of physical performance (vertical jump neuromuscular performance and height, 30-m sprint velocity and 30-m repeated sprint maintenance) and virtual reality-based tasks (relating to skill acquisition and decision-making) will be completed at baseline, half-time (HT), and 120-min. Should the findings indicate that caffeinated gum enhances performance during extra-time, then practitioners working in football can provide players with caffeinated gum prior to extra-time as an ergogenic aid to either improve or mitigate declines in physical, technical, and cognitive performance.
