6Local representation theory
modular representations as an introduction to the local representation theory of finite groups
By J. L. Alperin
The aim of this text is to present some of the key results in the representation theory of finite groups. In order to keep the account reasonably elementary, so that it can be used for graduate-level courses, Professor Alperin has concentrated on local representation theory, emphasising module theory throughout. In this way many deep results can be obtained rather quickly. After two introductory chapters, the basic results of Green are proved, which in turn lead in due course to Brauer's First Main Theorem. A proof of the module form of Brauer's Second Main Theorem is then presented, followed by a discussion of Feit's work connecting maps and the Green correspondence. The work concludes with a treatment, new in part, of the Brauer-Dade theory. As a text, this book contains ample material for a one semester course. Exercises are provided at the end of most sections; the results of some are used later in the text. Representation theory is applied in number theory, combinatorics and in many areas of algebra. This book will serve as an excellent introduction to those interested in the subject itself or its applications.

8Ever-Evolving Groups
An Introduction to Modern Finite Group Theory
By Alexander A. Ivanov
This book presents an original approach to the theory of finite groups, placing finite sporadic groups on an equal footing. It provides a nearly comprehensive overview of developments in the study of sporadic groups since the classification of finite simple groups was completed. Authored by one of the key contributors to these developments, a major theme of the book is the growing role that geometry has played in this story in the form of diagram geometries, amalgams, graph theory and “pushing up”. The chapters interweave various ideas and techniques applicable to all sporadic groups. Many of the results presented—several due to the author and collaborators—appear in book form for the first time. While much of the book describes developments from recent decades, it also includes significant new material, notably on the enigmatic Thompson group and the Monster. The final chapter explores connections to Majorana algebras and discusses some remarkable conjectures. A valuable addition to the literature on finite simple groups, this book will appeal to a wide audience, from advanced graduate students to researchers in group theory, combinatorics, finite geometry, coding theory, graph theory, and other mathematical fields that use group theory to study symmetries and structures.

9theory of finite groups
an introduction
By Hans Kurzweil and B. (Bernd) Stellmacher
From reviews of the German Edition: "This is an exciting text and a refreshing contribution to an area in which challenges continue to flourish and to captivate the viewer. Even though representation theory and constructions of simple groups have been omitted, the text serves as a springboard for deeper study in many directions. One who completes this text not only gains an appreciation of both the depth and the breadth of the theory of finite groups, but also witnesses the evolutionary development of concepts that form a basis for current investigations. This is accomplished by providing a thread that permits a natural flow from one concept to another rather than compartmentalizing. Operators on sets and groups are introduced early and used effectively throughout. The bibliography provides excellent supplemental support." H. Bechtell, Mathematical Reviews "Altogether, we have a well written book, which gives an introduction into the field and furthermore shows us one of the most active recent areas of research. This is the first book which shows us the amalgam method and moreover shows us how it works. Maybe it can get the same influence on group theory today as Gorenstein's famous book got in the late sixtees and seventees. This book should be in any library." G. Stroth, Zentralblatt
