1Bayesian methods for finite population sampling

    By

Bayesian methods are finding increasing acceptance in the theory and practice of statistics. Bayesian Methods in Finite Population Sampling discusses some of these methods in the context of finite population sampling. Assuming a basic knowledge of the frequentist approach to finite population sampling, this monograph begins with a discussion of the underlying foundation of the subject. It describes the Bayesian and predictive approaches to inferential problems with an emphasis on the likelihood principle. Next Polya Posteriors are introduced to give non-informative Bayesian justification for standard frequentist methods, and various extensions of such posteriors are also considered. Finally, the book develops hierarchical and empirical Bayes models for simultaneous estimation of several stratum or area means, and discusses the relationship of these models with general mixed linear models. Appealing primarily to graduate students and researchers in finite population sampling, the book has also been written for Government and other applied statisticians who use sampling, and will be of interest to lecturers and researchers in statistics and biostatistics in general.
