The purpose of the current study is to better understand how the temporal proximity of reminders influences PM and the factors that influence how people strategically set reminders to optimize performance. If the reminder is not temporally proximal to the action execution stage, the intention essentially becomes a delayed-execution task, which can have negative consequences for performance. If a doctor is treating multiple patients, this may become an even bigger issue because some tasks may take priority over others. For example, when ensuring that a cancer patient receives medication, the appropriate time may be more important than remembering to treat a patient suffering from a common cold. In such instances, it may be optimal to strategically use reminders to ensure intention completion for some tasks compared to others. Experiment 4 will be similar to Experiment 3 with three primary adjustments. First, only the reminders of 0-second, 30-second, and no-reminder will be included. This change was made because performance was largely similar between 0-second and 6-second reminder conditions. Second, we use a 1 minute time interval rather than 1.15 minute. These first two changes were made to reduce the total duration of the task (now approximately 1 hr). Finally, participants will receive feedback throughout the task based on the number of points earned. During the formation of each new intention, the screen also displays the text “You have earned X out of Y possible points”. For example, if the participant successfully responds to a 5 point intention on the first trial, during encoding of the second intention it would state “You have earned 5 out of 5 possible points.” If the participant does not respond to a 20 point intention on the second trial, during encoding of the third intention it would state “You have earned 5 out of 25 possible points.” At the end of each block (fixed or choice) they are given their final point totals. This change was made because Experiment 3 showed that while point values clearly influenced offloading decisions, they had little influence on the number of intentions fulfilled in each block. Making point values more salient may encourage strategic allocation of attention to support remembering. Additionally, feedback may allow participants to learn over time that the 30-second reminder is largely ineffective.
