"Modulation Of The Attentional Blink By Episodic Memory Traces" Description:
The Internet Archive:
In the current study, we will examine whether activating one element of an episodic memory leads to attentional capture by other elements associated to this memory. Specifically, during the encoding phase of this task, participants are shown an image of a scene (e.g., a kitchen scene), a picture of the face of a famous person, and a picture of an object (e.g., a purse). Participants are asked to imagine that they were present in the scene and that they encountered the famous person and the object in that scene. This task induces an episodic-like memory of the event. Following a series of 20 imagined scenarios, participant’s memory for the scenario is tested using a cued recognition procedure in which they need to identify the person or the object they encountered in a scene. Next, participants will perform an attentional blink task in which they need to look for pictures of objects, faces, and scenes in a rapid serial visual presentation (RSVP) task. Each sequence includes two target pictures. The first target (T1) is a picture of a face or an object that was also included in the episodic memory task. The second target (T2) is a scene picture that appears at lag 2 or 6. The scene picture can be the scene that was associated to the object/face in the encoding task (i.e., associated T2), associated to a different object / face in the encoding task (i.e., non-associated T2), or a new scene picture not encountered in the encoding task (i.e., new T2). Recognition of the object / face and scene picture is tested using a recognition test in which participants need to select the correct picture from an array of eight pictures of the same type. Lastly, participants’ memory for the scenarios will be tested again to confirm retention of the memories throughout the AB task. Authors: Giulia Quagliozzi, Mark Nieuwenstein, & Sander Martens
