Davis Glasgow, extracts from six Aboriginal languages,: Pintupi, Yanyula, Burera, Wolmatjari, Gugu-Yalangi, Tiwi 1. Pintupi or Bintabe- West Desert subgroup of Southwest Group of the Pama-Nyungan Family, two monologues in Pintupi a Western Desert type language spoken around Papunya, west of Alice Springs in Central Australia. All voices are male. monologue 1: 5:50 min, monologue 2: 5:30 min 2. Yanyula or Yenyehlah same lang family as above - Two monologues in Yanyula spoken at Boroloolah, N.T., and at Doomadgee Mission, Q. Although it is not spoken in Arhem Land, it is most nearly related to Arhem Land type languages. Monologue 1: male elder, fully initiated in tribe, 60yo, native speaker at Doomafgee Mission. 1:25 min. First section on the merits of the hospital sister and how she does the work of a doctor. Second section, excusing himself from the language work because he wants to build a bough shelter. Monologue 2: 60yo female, native speaker at Borroloola, with full womens status in tribe, 3:40 min, About hinting for bush foods, eating them and taking food back to camp. 3. Burera or Berada spoken in Menangrieda or Menangreeda in Queensland NT: two conversations spoken at Maningrida, Arnhem Land N.T. Taped at different times but both conversations have the same three speakers and concern the same topic, chatting over day's activities. conversation 1: 4:16 min, Jimmy 35yo, Nym 25yo, Mark 12yo, males, single, older two initiated status in tribe, native speakers. conversation 2: 2:03 min 4. Wolmatjari Wamaderi, SW group of Pama-Ngungan or Pamanyongan Family - two monologues spoken around Fitzroy Crossing in Western Australia near Kembely. monologue 1: 3:46 min, male 50yo, fully initiated, church leader, fluent in several languages, description of events which led up to a fight and the fight itself and the results of it. monologue 2: 2:03 min, fully initiated male, fluent speaker affiliated with Wolmatjari tribe, the last half of the Prodigal Son 5. Gugu-Yalangi or Gugualangee - Two conversations spoken around Bloomfield River near Cooktown in Northern Queensland. All the speakers are men. conversation 1: 2:19 min. conversation 2: 6:05 min. 6. Tiwi - Two conversations in Tiwi spoken on Bathurst and other islands about 40miles north of Darwin, in the Northern Territory. Its relation to other Australian Aboriginal tribes and languages is negligible. speakers have good knowledge of the language and are affiliated with the Tiwi tribe. conversation 1: 2:25min, female 45yo, female 55yo and male interjector 58yo. older man is a tribal elder, younger woman wife of tribal elder, other woman no special status. about day's activities, caught wallaby, bandicoot, swam and slept, walked a long way, made a fire in a tree to catch a possum, cooked and ate it. conversation 2: 4:22min, same speakers minus the male interjector. about a trip in the bush to get food. they got mangrove worms, crabs and possums, took them home, cooked and ate them.
