"Named after her father (Joaquim José da Silva Xavier), Joaquina, the unknown, historically suppressed illegitimate daughter of Tiradentes, lived with her mother following the final punishment of Brazil's 'Martyr of Independence.' In a study accompanying this edition, and intended as a warning to teachers and historians about the difference between a historical and a fictional novel, author clarifies that Joaquina did exist, but not exactly as she, the author, created her. Indeed, the story, as partially narrated by Joaquina, mixes history and fiction creating a scenario that might have existed, with elaborate dialogues, details of landscape, and descriptions of the anguish shared by mother, daughter, their friends, and others. Verses from Romanceiro da Inconfidência by Cecília Meireles (see HLAS 38:7487) are interspersed in the narrative. As a roman à clef, narrative includes historical figures such as the painter Van Leyden, a Dutchman who lived in Brazil in the 18th century"--Handbook of Latin American Studies, v. 58.
