"ERIC ED466277: A National Symposium On Best Practices For Student Achievement In Science, Mathematics, Engineering, And Technology In Two-Year Hispanic-Serving Institutions (HSIs) (Avondale, Arizona, April 27-28, 2001)." Description:

The Internet Archive:

Approximately 130 community colleges in the U.S. are designated as Hispanic Serving Institutions (HSIs). The Census Bureau predicts that there will be approximately 21 million Hispanic residents in the U.S. by 2025. A total of 55% of Hispanic students seeking undergraduate degrees are enrolled in community colleges. Therefore, it is critical that community college faculty and administrators recognize the role they play in ensuring the success of Hispanic students in the science, mathematics, engineering, and technology (SMET) disciplines. Estrella Mountain Community College (Arizona), with a grant from the National Science Foundation, hosted a group of leading SMET educators representing HSI community colleges. This report provides an overview of the presentations made and recommendations developed during the two-day meeting. A report by the Western Interstate Commission for Higher Education predicts that the Latino high school enrollment will increase by 137% between 1995 and 2012, while the white/non-Latino enrollment will decrease by 12.5%. Among the recommendations made in this report are: the National Science Foundation should request $20 million from Congress for new grant programs for HSI colleges; schools should set high standards for their students; and Hispanic families and communities should be involved in all stages of education. The digital divide is also discussed, along with the role of K-12 education, institutional cooperation, and faculty preparation. Participating campuses' best practices are included. (NB)
