SCORES ON THE NELSON DENNY READING TESTS, ADVANCED FORM A, ON THE OTIS QUICK SCORING TESTS OF MENTAL ABILITY, GAMMA FORM BM, AND GRADE POINT AVERAGES COVERING 4 YEARS OF COLLEGE WORK WERE ANALYZED FOR 29 NEGRO ELEMENTARY STUDENT TEACHERS. APPROXIMATELY ONE THIRD OF THE SUBJECTS WERE IN THE 30-40 AGE RANGE, AND TWO-THIRDS WERE LESS THAN 25 YEARS OLD. RESULTS INDICATED THAT THE MEAN TOTAL GRADE EQUIVALENT ON THE NELSON DENNY READING TEST FOR THE SAMPLE GROUP TESTED WAS SUFFICIENTLY BELOW THAT OF THE NORMATIVE POPULATION TO JUSTIFY THE ELEMENTARY STUDENT TEACHERS' NEED FOR READING IMPROVEMENT. THE CORRELATION COEFFICIENTS BETWEEN SCORES WAS NOT SIGNIFICANT ENOUGH TO STATE THAT THESE STUDENT TEACHERS READ AT LEVELS COMMENSURATE WITH THEIR IQ, OR THAT THEIR GRADE POINT AVERAGES WERE COMMENSURATE WITH THEIR READING PERFORMANCE. VARIABLES SUCH AS AGE, SIZE OF HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATING CLASS, AND EDUCATION AND OCCUPATION OF PARENTS DID NOT SEEM TO INFLUENCE THE READING SCORES OF THE SUBJECTS. A SIMILAR STUDY WITH 200 SUBJECTS EQUATED ON THE BASIS OF AGE AND INTELLIGENCE IS PLANNED. A REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND REFERENCES ARE INCLUDED.
