The Informedia Project at Carnegie Mellon University has created a multi-terabyte digital video library consisting of thousands of hours of video, segmented into over 50,000 stories, or documents. Since Informedia's inception in 1994, numerous interfaces have been developed and tested for accessing this library, including work on multimedia abstractions, or surrogates, which represent a video document in an abbreviated manner. The utility and efficiency of these surrogates have been reported in detail elsewhere, validated through a number of usability methods, including transaction log analysis, formal empirical studies, contextual inquiry, heuristic evaluation, and cognitive walkthroughs. This paper begins with an introduction to a few of these interfaces and their implementation history. The promise of Web technologies is then discussed, particularly the recommendations of the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C), leading to a presentation of the Informedia digital video library delivered through a Web browser via XML and XSLT. Emphasis is placed on the tailored accessibility offered by this information architecture, with specific examples given as evidence. The paper concludes with a discussion of next steps planned for the Informedia library work. (Contains 19 references.) (AEF)

XSLT is a general purpose, document-oriented functional language, generally used to transform XML documents (or, in general, solve any problem that can be coded as an XML document). This work represents the realization of Network-Centric goals of interoperability, information management, systems integration and cohesive battlespace visualization using networked computer technology. The application of structured data methodologies using the E xtensible Markup Language (XML) allows organizations and systems to exchange and process battlespace information cooperatively. The practical application of this technology is demonstrated. Governance of information systems using structured data and the rejection of proprietary, application specific solutions is a leadership responsibility that is defined as Data Control. XML is presented as a leadership control measure that can be used to achieve Network-Centricity on the battlefield. The fundamental principles of XML application development are presented in the context of warfighting. Exemplars address a cross-section of battlespace applications. The visualization of the physical battlefield is demonstrated with network delivered 3D terrain views. Geodesy and position reporting is addressed using an XML defined data structure to enforce interoperability. An XML expression of the Battlespace Generic Hub is applied to joint and multilateral interoperability and information exchange. An approach to the effective employment of multiple different, but cooperative, autonomous systems in the battlespace uses XML to define parameters that determine artificial intelligence multi-agent behavior and environmental factors. This thesis combines a critical analysis of the priorities of Network- Centricity and interoperability with practical and functional exemplars that demonstrate the efficacy of extensible architectures. The pragmatic approach is directed at the warfighter, and leadership challenges are identified.

Over the years, XML has been a rich target for attackers due to flaws in its design as well as implementations. It is a tempting target because it is used by other programming languages to interconnect applications and is supported by web browsers. In this talk, I will demonstrate how to use XSLT to produce documents that are vulnerable to new exploits. XSLT can be leveraged to affect the integrity of arithmetic operations, lead to code logic failure, or cause random values to use the same initialization vector. Error disclosure has always provided valuable information, but thanks to XSLT, it is possible to partially read system files that could disclose service or system's passwords. Finally, XSLT can be used to compromise end-user confidentiality by abusing the same-origin policy concept present in web browsers. This presentation includes proof-of-concept attacks demonstrating XSLT’s potential to affect production systems, along with recommendations for safe development. A generic transformation of XML data into the Resource Description Framework (RDF) and its implementation by XSLT transformations is presented. It was developed by the grid integration project for robotic telescopes of AstroGrid-D to provide network communication through the Remote Telescope Markup Language (RTML) to its RDF based information service. The transformation's generality is explained by this example. It automates the transformation of XML data into RDF and thus solves this problem of semantic computing. Its design also permits the inverse transformation but this is not yet implemented.

In this short paper we present our solution for the Hello World case study of the Transformation Tool Contest (TTC) 2011 using the QVTR-XSLT tool. The tool supports editing and execution of the graphical notation of QVT Relations language. The case study consists of a set of simple transformation tasks which covers the basic functions required for a transformation language, such as creating, reading/querying, updating and deleting of model elements. We design a transformation for each of the tasks.

A common problem between Military applications and operators is the consistent and meaningful exchange of data. Currently, several models and simulations exist for the purposes of training and analyzing military data. Due to the absence of an agreed-upon standard with which to represent unit data, much is lost during interchange and applications are not maximized. This thesis is a step towards a solution. Extensible Markup Language (XML) technology has been widely accepted as a standard for representing information in such a way that it is self-documenting, self-validating and platform independent. By using the Command and Control Information Exchange Data Model (C2IEDM), formerly known as Generic Hub, and XML it is possible to develop a representation of unit data that is extensible and broadly useable by tactical systems and human operators alike. This thesis approaches the problem exploring the Model Driven Architecture (MDA) and the Extensible Modeling Simulation Framework (XMSF) as possible overarching architectural concepts for a global solution. The C2IEDM is used as the core data interchange model for this research and applies XML technologies, schema and the Extensible Stylesheet Language for Transformations (XSLT) to derive a formatted data representation that is acceptable within the Flexible Asymmetric Simulation Technologies (FAST) Toolbox. The transformation example serves as template for other simulation programs to follow for interchange through the common base model. This thesis shows that by using a common data representation like C2IEDM coupled with the power of XML and XSLT, unit information can be transformed and interchanged between applications. In order to accomplish this, an extensive analysis is done on recently performed and ongoing research as well as the development of exemplars to show how the proposed process is completed.

XSLT is an increasingly popular language for processing XML data. It is widely supported by application platform software. However, little optimization effort has been made inside the current XSLT processing engines. Evaluating a very simple XSLT program on a large XML document with a simple schema may result in extensive usage of memory. In this paper, we present a novel notion of \emph{Streaming Processing Model} (\emph{SPM}) to evaluate a subset of XSLT programs on XML documents, especially large ones. With SPM, an XSLT processor can transform an XML source document to other formats without extra memory buffers required. Therefore, our approach can not only tackle large source documents, but also produce large results. We demonstrate with a performance study the advantages of the SPM approach. Experimental results clearly confirm that SPM improves XSLT evaluation typically 2 to 10 times better than the existing approaches. Moreover, the SPM approach also features high scalability.
