8Using Diacritics In English Writing; The Da Nang COVID-19 Outbreak

By

On this week's show, we begin (1:08) with a conversation about our recent decision to use diacritics in Vietnamese names on the Saigoneer website. What are the benefits of using the language to its full extent, and what does the fact that most websites publishing in English don't use diacritics say about our relationship to Vietnamese? Then (21:16), we look at the ongoing COVID-19 outbreak centered on Da Nang - how has this development impacted daily life in Saigon, and what do we think of the protective measures being taken here?As always, we close with Bánh Mì Banter (31:38).

His quest for the perfect cup of coffee is never-ending, and will likely kill him some day.In this highly caffeinated interview, Chris explains: * What National Novel Writing Month is * Why the event attracts 60,000 masochists from around the world * How to sign up, and what you're getting yourself into if you do * Why it's okay to produce a bad novel during the event * How people throw lots of parties before, during, and after the event * Why it's unlikely he'll be sending his winged monkey enforcers after you * How to have the time of your life even if you don't write fiction

1220 - Richard Paul Evans NY Times Bestselling Author On Writing Your Own Story

By

*PARENTAL GUIDANCE: Santa spoiler included as part of one of Richard's stories!*  Each of us has a story.  Most contain common features - adventure, some sort of crisis, a struggle, learning, growth and ultimately, triumph over adversity. Just last week, I took on a challenge to write my autobiography in one page. I cheated. I wrote two pages. It was difficult to sum up a lifetime of challenges and opportunities that have molded me into who I am today; or at least, who I think I am. As I pondered over the experiences that have transformed me, challenged me or made a difference in my life, I noticed something. All of those experiences were very difficult. Infertility, recurrent pregnancy loss, divorce, betrayal - painful, painful things to go through. And yet, those experiences each brought with them a message. That I CAN. That I am not what happens to me. That time truly does heal. And that there is always, always hope. I'm kicking off season two with one of my personal hero's - Richard Paul Evans.  His story is nothing short of amazing (and I'll bet it's one you haven't heard before). Richard is the #1 New York Times and USA Today bestselling author of more than forty novels. There are currently more than thirty-five million copies of his books in print worldwide, translated into more than twenty-four languages. Richard has won several esteemed awards and is the founder of, \"The Christmas Box International,\" an organization devoted to maintaining emergency children's shelters and providing services and resources for abused, neglected or homeless children, teens and young adults.  You can connect with Niki Bennett at https://www.ascentcoachingandtherapy.com/ P.S. 18Technical Report Writing Today

43438: Writing Abstractions In Tests

By

Writing abstractions in tests can be surprisingly similar to storytelling. The most masterful stories are those where the author has stripped away all of the extra information, and given you just enough knowledge to be immersed and aware of what is going on. But striking that balance can be tricky, both in storytelling and abstractions in tests. Too much information and you risk overwhelming the reader. Too little and they won't understand why things are operating the way they are. Today, Stephanie and Joel get into some of the more controversial practices around testing, why people use them, and how to strike the right balance with your information. They discuss the most common motivations for introducing abstractions, from improved readability to simplifying the test's purpose and the types of tests where they are most likely to introduce abstractions. Our hosts also reflect on how they feel about different abstractions in tests - like custom matchers and shared examples - outlining when they reach for them, and the tradeoffs and benefits that come with each. To learn more about how to find the perfect level of abstraction, be sure to tune in!Key Points From This Episode:What's new in Joel's world; mocking out screens for processes or a new bit of UI.The new tool Stephanie's using for reading on the web: Reader by Readwise.Today's topic: controversial practices around testing. How Stephanie and Joel feel about looping through arrays and having IT blocks for each. The most common motivations for introducing abstractions or helper methods into your tests.Pros and cons of factories as abstractions in testing.Types of tests where Joel and Stephanie are more likely to introduce abstractions.Using page objects in system tests to improve user experience.Finding the balance between too little and too much information with abstraction in testing. Why Stephanie has been enjoying fancier matchers like RSpecs.Top uses of custom matchers, especially for specialized error messaging. Why Stephanie prefers custom matchers over shared examples.Using helper methods as a lighter version of abstraction.Differences and similarities between abstractions in tests versus application code.A reminder to keep your goals in mind when using abstraction.Links Mentioned in Today's Episode:Reader by ReadwiseWhy factoriesWhy not factoriesCapybara at a single level of abstractionWriting custom RSpec matchersValue objects shared examples'DRY is about knowledge'Joel Quenneville on LinkedInSupport The Bike Shed

47097 - Is Writing Good For Your Mental Health?

By

In today's episode, I talk to Maxwell Ivey, the Blind Blogger, about his childhood spent in his family run carnival. It taught him a lot about life generally, and also give him the skills he would need as an independent blind person.Skills like seeing past his ego and asking for, and accepting, help where he needed it. Or, of asking for what you want, not just what you need. As Max says, if you don't ask someone you don't give them the opportunity to say yes!We talk about how writing, and being creative generally, is good for your mental health. It makes you feel good about yourself and lets you connect with others who 'get' you.A big component of what Max teaches is to look for the positive in life and he gives me examples of when he's been challenged and had to work hard to see the positive in a situation - but it's always there if you look for it.This is so relevant to you as a writer because there will be times that you don't like what you write, or an agent rejects your manuscript or short story. How will you navigate those challenging times so that you come out the other side still in tact?He gives advice on how to start and run a blog or podcast, so if that's something you've been thinking about, this interview is a great listen.Max is building a network called the WYE Network (What's Your Excuse) with the aim of helping disabled people start and publish their own podcast, and support the disability community. As always, you'll find all links in the show notes.Links:The Blind Blogger - Helping you share your story and grow your passion through the power of TV, radio, and podcast interviews. What's Your Excuse Show - What's Your Excuse?
