In 1894, when women’s lives and choices were restricted and their influence was limited, a group of Kansas Citians answered a call to “stand shoulder to shoulder in the uplifting of the mental, moral, and physical status of our city.” They established the Kansas City Athenaeum women’s club, which advocated in ensuing decades for improved health, education, and public safety throughout the city. It lent women the voice and impact to exact positive change. Joyce Merrill , a longtime member of the Athenaeum and the organization’s current vice president, examines the roles and contributions of the Athenaeum and other women’s clubs and their importance to Kansas City’s development over more than a century.

A study investigated the working relationship between writing program directors and writing center directors nationally, to develop a picture of such a relationship and to compare the nature and status of the two positions and the backgrounds of the people who hold them. In all, about 650 surveys were distributed to members of professional associations, and useable responses were received from 176 people. Responses suggest that writing program directors regard writing center directors more as partners and less as helpmates than they did in a 1988 study (Olson and Ashton-Jones), and that the relation of the program director to the center director is much more collaborative than supervisory. Often, collaboration and communication can help overcome a lack of power or status in their institutions or a lack of knowledge about composition research, management practices, or institutional politics. Still, survey data suggest that program directors enjoy a more privileged place in college/university structures and that the professionalization of center directors is lagging behind the professionalization of other writing program administrators. Respondents almost never described coming to an agreement about philosophies and goals as a result of collaboration. Many respondents mentioned how important it was for a director in either position to be a scholar in composition studies. (Contains 9 tables, 4 notes, and 27 references. This article describes a program called "Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports" (PBIS), a nationwide effort to develop school-wide systems of support that include proactive strategies for defining, teaching, and supporting appropriate student behaviors to create positive school environments. The John Powers Center is the Illinois Service Resource Center (ISRC) demonstration site for this program in a setting for deaf and hard of hearing students. The ISRC is an Illinois State Board of Education Technical Assistance Project serving deaf and hard of hearing students' behavioral needs. PBIS provides behavioral support for students along a continuum following the same model used to provide intervention in academics. This continuum extends to all students, with increased support for students who need it. The program has a strong visual component, specific behavioral expectations, and an understanding that students are sometimes cut off from incidental learning and need to have positive behaviors taught, modeled, prompted, and reinforced. PBIS addresses student behavior from three perspectives: (1) development of a system-wide approach; (2) consistent practices; and (3) review of data. When systems, practices, and data are connected, opportunities for student success are enhanced. As school personnel focus on a positive approach, students respond in a positive way. When students succeed in demonstrating appropriate behavior, there is often a noticeable change in school climate. (Contains 1 resource.)

You know you have lots of people who talk the talk about investing in higher education, and everybody understands that a better higher education institution creates the opportunity for more good paying jobs not only for the folks who build and renovate these building, but for the folks in the private sector who will come in and then wind up with new opportunities for growth in all these different industries in our state. It's easy to talk about it, the more difficult part is making the decision to commit the resources that are necessary to be able to make it happen. That's why I want to compliment the Senate President Steve Sweeney, the Speaker Sheila Oliver, for doing this is a bipartisan way. And I want to compliment the men and women of New Jersey who went to the polls -- and even during at times of challenging economic times -- said investing $1.3 billion in New Jersey's students will make New Jersey a better and stronger place.

"The frame of this chapter is how clinicians and leaders employed in psychiatric departments in hospitals experience and cope with patients who commit suicide while undergoing treatment. The major focus is the phenomenon which in the Bow-tie model is called “stabilization”. To explore this phenomenon in an empirical analysis, two concepts of samhandling are introduced, these being coordination and cooperation. These two concepts are used in an interpretation of what eight leaders and clinicians report on how they handle working together after a patient during treatment in a psychiatric hospital has unexpectedly committed suicide. The findings are that leaders and clinicians have different views on what stabilization is. Stabilization to the leaders seems to be something they can handle by using mandatory organizational procedures of coordination. To the clinicians (psychologists and psychiatrists) however, stabilization is less straightforward. Professional stabilization is, to them, more important than organizational stabilization, and it requires another form of interaction – namely, cooperation. Cooperation is, in its simplest and purest form, a symmetrical way of working together, based on equality in competence and an unforced relation between the parties. For the purpose of professional stabilization, this is the form of interaction preferred by the clinicians. However, these findings are tentative and more research is needed to elaborate why leaders and clinicians respond as they do after a patient suicide."
