We show that all of the Sch\"{u}tzenberger complexes of an Adian inverse semigroup are finite if the Sch\"{u}tzenberger complex of every positive word is finite. This enables us to solve the word problem for certain classes of Adian inverse semigroups (and hence for the corresponding Adian semigroups and Adian groups).

3ERIC ED403006: Spreading The Word: Providing Composition Instruction Through Links With Social Science Classes.

In an effort to provide students with instruction in academic writing early in their college careers, a project was undertaken to link a developmental composition course to an introductory psychology course at Washington's Bellevue College. The two professors designed a sequence of four papers offering practice in two of the more common academic writing forms: exposition and experiment write-up. For each type, students wrote two papers, one simpler and one more complex. The first expository assignment involved the application of a psychological theory to a set of facts, while the second required students to apply several theories of learning to a case study regarding a boy who is afraid of school. The third paper, which represented a simple write-up of an experiment, required students to perform a test of children's cognitive development and relate results. The fourth paper, the more complex write-up, involved the design, execution, and write-up of a field experiment. Although the project had drawbacks, including the high burden for grading papers placed on the psychology instructor, it was successful in providing students with much needed guidance in academic writing. Course materials, including the four paper assignments and a homework assignment asking students to locate a primary journal article and discuss its structure in groups, are appended. (HAA)

One of the main problems in digital filter implementation is that all practical devices are of finite precision. Therefore, the finite word length effect of digital filters is an area of high interest. There are various types of digital filter structures. Due to the effect of finite word length registers, each digital filter structure gives a slightly different output response for the same transfer function. Therefore, it is important to find the best filter structure which has the lowest affect on the output response for the same transfer function. In this paper, six IIR (Infinite Impulse Response) digital filters and six FIR (Finite Impulse Response) digital filters are investigated, theoretically, for the low sensitivity due to a finite work length register. In addition, the six FIR digital filters are simulated by computer to obtain practical results. Finally, it will be shown that NS (Nested Structure) digital filter produce the 'best' response if minimum sensitivity is the figure of merit. (Author)

13ERIC ED037446: The Grammatical Form Class Of Verbs And The Operant Conditioning Of Word Classes. Report From The Motivated Learning Project.

An analysis of part-of-speech membership was made utilizing certain mechanisms that have been proposed to explain the nature of word classes. It was proposed that words of the same form class constitute "verbal habit families" on the basis of either a common grammatical meaning response, a common affix, or a common label (e.g., "verb"). One implication of this model was that sentences may be regarded as sequences of grammatical habit families. Three experiments tested two derivations from the model. Experiments one and two indicated that, under certain circumstances, words classified as verbs do indeed constitute a word response class. Experiment three tested the hypothesis that a novel word will gain verb properties by being paired with other verbs. The results of this experiment indicated that the greater the number of times a nonsense syllable was paired with verbs, the less often it was used as a verb in a sentence completion task. The effects of age and intelligence levels upon word associations were studied in 96 intellectually retarded, normal, and superior children with IQ's of 65 to 80, 91 to 110, and 117 to 158 respectively. A word association and a word usage task (reliability coefficients of .91 and .98) called for homogeneous responses to six form classes--count nouns, mass nouns, adjectives, intransitive verbs, transitive verbs, and adverbs. Results generally supported the conclusions that homogeneous responding increased in a linear fashion across age with the more frequently occurring form classes leveling off in some instances, and followed a regular sequence of development regardless of intelligence group. Performance level differed for retardates when they were compared with the superior group and, in some instances, with the normal group while performance level does not differ when normal and superior groups are compared. The rate of homogeneous responding appears to be similar for all intelligence groups on the more commonly used form classes while the groups respond differentially in some instances on the more complex form classes.
