The results of the Fly-By-Light/Power-By-Wire (FBL/PBW) Workshop held on March 17-19, 1992, at the NASA Langley Research Center are presented. The FBL/PBW program is a joint NASA LeRC/LaRC effort to develop the technology base for confident application of integrated FBL/PBW systems to transport aircraft. The objectives of the workshop were to ascertain the FBL/PBW program technical requirements and satisfy the requirements and needs from the industry viewpoint, provide a forum for presenting and documenting alternative technical approaches which satisfy the requirements, and assess the plan adequacy in accomplishing plan objectives, aims, and technology transfer. Areas addressed were: optical sensor systems, power-by-wire systems, FBL/PBW fault-tolerant architectures, electromagnetic environment assessment, and system integration and demonstration. The workshop consisted of an introductory meeting, a 'keynote' presentation, a series of individual panel sessions covering the above areas, with midway presentations by the panel chairpersons, followed by a final summarizing/integrating session by the individual panels, and a closing plenary session summarizing the results of the workshop.

The One Box One Wire (OB1) Joint Combined Technology Demonstration (JCTD) is a United States Central Command (USCENTCOM) initiative that has been approved by congress for a FY 2009 rolling start. The primary goal of the JCTD Program is to demonstrate, operationally assess, and transition capability solutions and innovative concepts to address the joint, coalition and interagency operational gaps and shortfalls in meeting the needs of the warfighter. Since inception in 1995, the Advanced Concept Technology Demonstration (ACTD) Program, and now the Joint Capability Technology Demonstration (JCTD) Program, has deployed critically needed warfighting solutions to every major Combatant Command theater. The OB1 JCTD is an initiative designed to transform the existing Department of Defense (DoD) air-gapped networks (NIPR, SIPR, etc.) to an environment that allows the user to access all networks from a single PC terminal while still preserving the separation and security of data flows. This thesis will be a business case analysis of the cost of implementing and sustaining the OB1 JCTD as compared to the current DoD multi-network infrastructure. This thesis will address the question of whether converting the existing military network infrastructure into OB1 is financially feasible. This thesis will concentrate specifically on OB JCTD initiative.

Electron Beam Freeform Fabrication (EBF3) is an additive manufacturing technique, developed at NASA Langley Research Center, capable of fabricating large scale aerospace parts. Advantages of using EBF3 as opposed to conventional manufacturing methods include, decreased design-to-product time, decreased wasted material, and the ability to adapt controls to produce geometrically complex parts with properties comparable to wrought products. However, to fully exploit the potential of the EBF3 process development of materials tailored for the process is required. Powder cored tubular wire (PCTW) technology was used to modify Ti-6Al-4V and Al 6061 feedstock to enhance alloy content, refine grain size, and create a metal matrix composite in the as-solidified structures, respectively.

This paper presents in viewgraph format an overview of the program at NASA Langley Research Center to develop fly-by-light/power-by-wire (FBL/PBW) technology. Benefits of FBL/PBW include intrinsic electromagnetic interference (EMI) immunity and lifetime immunity to signal EMI of optics; simplified certification; the elimination of hydraulics, engine bleed air, and variable speed, constant frequency drive; and weight and volume reduction. The paper summarizes a study on the electromagnetic environmental effects on FBL/PBW systems. The paper concludes with FY 1993 plans.

This document is the third year interim report for a four-year program to refine and develop Computer-Aided Design protocols for implementation of subnanosceond Emitter Coupled Logic in High-Speed Computer Modules using a wire wrap interconnection medium. The software and user manual for implementation guides are not part of the actual report. This report describes the results of work conducted in the third year of a four year program to develop rapid methods for designing and prototyping high-speed digital processor systems using subnanosecond emitter coupled logic (ECL). The third year effort was divided into two separate sets of tasks. In Task 1, described in Sections III-VII of this report, we have nearly completed development of new sets of design rules, interconnection protocols, special components, and logic panels, for a technology based upon specially designed leadless ceramic chip carriers developed at Mayo Foundation. Task 2, described in Sections VIII and IX of this report, continued the development of a comprehensive computer-aided design/computer-aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM) software package which is specifically tailored to support the peculiar design requirements of processors operating in a high clock rate, transmission line environment, either with subnanosecond ECL components or with any other families of subnanosecond devices.

This report describes the results of work conducted to develop rapid methods for designing and prototyping high-speed digital processor systems using subnanosecond emitter coupled logic (ECL). In Task I, we have begun a conversion of the design rules, interconnection protocols, special components, and standard logic panels developed during the first year for high-speed ECL-based digital processors from a technology based upon dual-in-line packages (DIP) to a technology based upon specially designed leadless ceramic chip carriers. This conversion was undertaken since it was learned during the first year that the DIP packages themselves are compromising the maximum performance levels of which the ECL dice are capable. We have also undertaken an extensive investigation of several possible approaches to increasing these operational maxima to an even greater extent than with our present design for new Leadless Ceramic Chip Carriers. Task 2 was to continue development of a comprehensive computer-aided design/computer-aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM) software package which would be specifically tailored to support the peculiar design requirements of processors operating in a high clock rate, transmission line environment. The CAD/CAM software package has been structured to be sufficiently flexible to assimilate advances in device and component technology, and to accept new sets of design rules resulting from advances in engineering design practice.

This process will automatically inspect flimsies, panels, and completed boards measuring line spacing, widths, and flaws. The cell will incorporate robotic technologies. A flight experiment has demonstrated a modular solar concentrator that can be used as a direct substitute replacement for planar photovoltaic panels in spacecraft solar arrays. The Light Concentrating Panel (LCP) uses an orthogrid arrangement of composite mirror strips to form an array of rectangular mirror troughs that reflect light onto standard, high-efficiency solar cells at a concentration ratio of approximately 3:1. The panel area, mass, thickness, and pointing tolerance has been shown to be similar to a planar array using the same cells. Concentration reduces the panel's cell area by 2/3, which significantly reduces the cost of the panel. An opportunity for a flight experiment module arose on NASA's Small Explorer / Wide-Field Infrared Explorer (SMEX/WIRE) spacecraft, which uses modular solar panel modules integrated into a solar panel frame structure. The design and analysis that supported implementation of the LCP as a flight experiment module is described. Easy integration into the existing SMEX-LITE wing demonstrated the benefits of technology transparency. Flight data shows the stability of the LCP module after nearly one year in Low Earth Orbit.

While some continue to use the copper-wire landline connections for their phone service, the vast majority of landlines are now based upon an Internet connection. Several fixed-winged airplanes have successfully used fly-by-wire (FBW) technology for the last 40 years. This technology is now beginning to be incorporated into rotary wing aircraft. By using FBW technology, manufacturers are expecting to improve upon the weight, maintenance time and costs, handling and reliability of the aircraft. Before mass production of this new system begins in new models such as the UH-60MU, testing must be conducted to insure the safety of this technology as well as to reassure others it will be worth the time and money to make such a dramatic change to a perfectly functional machine. The RASCAL JUH-60A has been modified for these purposes. This Black Hawk helicopter has already been equipped with the FBW technology and can be configured as a near perfect representation of the UH-60MU. Because both machines have very similar qualities, the data collected from the RASCAL can be used to make future decisions about the UH-60MU. The U.S. Army AFDD Flight Project Office oversees all the design modifications for every hardware system used in the RASCAL aircraft. This project deals with specific designs and analyses of unique RASCAL aircraft subsystems and their modifications to conduct flight mechanics research.

An investigation of wire-to-wire crosstalk is presented in an attempt to accurately predict the magnitude of the voltage coupled to a twisted wire pair. A sensitivity analysis of the twisted wire pair is conducted to determine the effect that line twist has on the coupled differential mode voltage when the twisted pair is connected in an unbalanced configuration. An improved computer model is developed to aid in the prediction of the voltage coupled to the twisted wire pair when it is terminated in low impedance loads. Another circuit configuration which is investigated consists of a differential line driver connected to a differential line receiver by a twisted wire pair. Predictions of the common mode voltage coupled to the twisted pair are computed with a single wire model and a comparison is made with experimental results. (Author)

We present the design and performance of a prototype ASIC digitizer for integrated wire chamber readout, implemented in 65 nm commercial CMOS technology. Each channel of the 4-channel prototype is composed of two 16-bit Time-to-Digital Converters (TDCs), one 8-bit Analog-to-Digital Converter (ADC), a front-end preamplifier and shaper, plus digital and analog buffers that support a variety of digitization chains. The prototype has a multiplexed digital backend that executes a state machine, distributes control and timing signals, and buffers data for serial output. Laboratory bench tests measure the absolute TDC resolution between 74 ps and 480 ps, growing with the absolute delay, and a relative time resolution of 19 ps. Resolution outliers due to cross-talk between clock signals and supply or reference voltages are seen. After calibration, the ADC displays good linearity and noise performance, with an effective number of bits of 6.9. Under normal operating conditions the circuit consumes 32 mW per channel. Potential design improvements to address the resolution drift and tails are discussed.

Gadsby and his youthful army, despite some opposition, transform Branton Hills from a stagnant municipality into a bustling, thriving city. The story begins around 1906 and continues through World War I, Prohibition, and President Warren G. Harding's administration.<br><br> "Gadsby" is a lipogram - a whole novel of some 50.000 words without a single instance of the letter E. When it first appeared in 1939 it was hardly noticed by the general public, but a modern reviewer called it "probably the most ambitious work ever attempted in this genre". Ernest Vincent Wright was an American author known for his book Gadsby, a 50,000-word novel which, except for the introduction and a note at the end, did not use the letter "e". The biographical details of his life are unclear. A 2002 article in the Village Voice by Ed Park said he might have been English by birth but was more probably American. The article said he might have served in the navy and that he has been incorrectly called a graduate of MIT. The article says that he attended a vocational high school attached to MIT in 1888 but there is no record that he graduated. This is a fairly substantial western, written in 1911 by Harold Bell Wright, then a major bestselling author. (His best-known novel is “The Shepherd of the Hills”) Strangely, the winning of Barbara Worth is a small part of the story, though she is one of the main characters. She was a foundling, discovered with her dying mother in the desert. She takes the name of her adopted father, Jefferson Worth. He is perhaps the main character; he is a capitalist, with very humanitarian qualities. He is pitted against other capitalists, ones with little concern for the good of the settlers attracted to the desert they are developing. The story concerns the efforts to reclaim the desert (Jaquinn Valley), by diverting waters of the Colorado River into canals that will make the land suitable for crops and cities. (Wright could not possibly have imagined the low water level of the Colorado River of today.) Wright wrote about capitalism vs. labor in several of his novels, and he does here. He often showed biased support for labor; however, he also showed a real effort to understand the role of each. In his time there were almost no regulations on capitalists, and there was, in fact, great abuses by the barons. This conflict is the heart of the story. But it is also a story of the loyalty of several employees of Jefferson Worth–loyalty, and love toward Worth, and also toward his adopted daughter. He attempts to make the town realize that the real enemy is neither labor nor capital; it is the extremes of capital greed and labor socialism.
