I recently attended a talk by Boston-based voice actor and ethnographer Khadeja Merenkov about the need to use cultural artifacts accurately and respectfully in video games. Don't just use a mosque because you like mosques, she advocated; recognize what those objects represent to the culture they come from. I hadn't previously considered that the inspirations one draws from when creating a fictional game or story need to be taken in context. I asked her onto Polygamer to talk more about how different (non-American) cultures and peoples are portrayed in games. There is a striking disparity in COVID-19's impact along racial lines, highlighting the privileges White Americans have in increasingly important aspects of life, such as access to better health care (Feagin & Bennefield, 2014) and better health outcomes (Kate & Goodman, 2014). However, the presence of this threat of infectious disease may lead White people to increase support for behavioral conformity and personal cultural worldview (Greenberg et al., 1990; Murray & Schaller, 2012), resulting in greater denial of White Privilege. When the threat itself is unable to be eliminated, such as in the persistence of COVID-19, commitment to secure beliefs like religion may act as a buffer against this existential threat and its consequences by providing psychological security and hope (McGregor et al., 2010; Van Tongeren et al., 2016). Although religion generally boasts as a protagonist of prosocial behavior, some studies have found that greater religiosity can actually predict an increase in negative attitudes toward racial outgroups (e.g. Hall et al., 2010). To reconcile conflicting evidence of the influence of religion on interpersonal perception, it may be critical to identify what components of religion are evoked in the language used in priming, rather than evaluate the effect of religiosity as a whole. The current study aims to investigate the effect of religious cognition on the relationship between threat and denial of White Privilege, using juxtaposed spiritual/abstract and institutional/concrete religious primes as conceptually distinct categories of religious words, proposed by Ritter and Preston (2013). This study also aims to explore how exposure to racial diversity during important developmental periods, such as adolescence, shapes the relationship between threat and denial of White Privilege.

An observational study focused on White parents' racial socialization, examining perceptions of White privilege, awareness of inequalities, attributions for inequalities, and views of CRT.
