White organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) are ultra-thin, large-area light sources made from organic semiconductor materials. Over the last decades, much research has been spent on finding the suitable materials to realize highly efficient monochrome and white OLEDs. With their high efficiency, color-tunability, and color-quality, white OLEDs are emerging to become one of the next generation light sources. In this review, we discuss the physics of a variety of device concepts that are introduced to realize white OLEDs based on both polymer and small molecule organic materi als. Owing to the fact that about 80 % of the internally generated photons are trapped within the thin-film layer structure, we put a second focus on reviewing promising concepts for improved light outcoupling.

In recent efforts to improve the performance of white light-emitting diode (WLEDs), researchers have focused on angular color uniformity (ACU), an effective index for evaluating the light quality of WLEDs. In this article, we also aim for the WLED development by applying three phosphor layers in the remote phosphor structure. The dual-layer phosphor (DLP) remote structure is also included in the research for comparison with the triple-layer phosphor (TLP) in terms of their impacts on the lighting quality of WLEDs. To ensure the diversity and applicability in different scenarios, performances of multi-layer phosphor structures in WLED devices with average correlated color temperatures (ACCTs) from 5,600 K to 8,500 K are measured. The experimental results have proved that both TLP and DLP structures are suitable to enhance WLEDs’ performance as each structure excels at specific qualities. In particular, at all ACCTs, the DLP structure is getting better in improving the color rendering index (CRI), while the TLP is more advantageous to color quality scale (CQS) and light output. The TLP also presents a lower color deviation than the DLP does, which leads to a better color uniformity in WLEDs at all ACCTs.

The effects of injecting TiO2 nanoparticles with phosphorus silicone packing on white color light-emitting diodes (WLEDs) are examined. In WLED packages, the proposed approach may increase luminance emission by 2.7%, while the coordinated color temperature will increase by 39%. At the same time, the required phosphorus quantity will be lowered by 5% along with the joint temperature of 6.5 °C. The modifications, which boost illuminating performance and also reduce temperature aggregation, are because of the packing material's increased illuminating dispersion efficiency or even refracting indices, along with lower illuminating reduction, for which color fusing inside the parcels is responsible. Consequently, the results suggest improved WLED lighting system performance makes the products more appropriate in solid-state lighting.

Nevertheless, it was recently called into question whether all two-ribbon flares are eruptive. In this paper, we investigate a two-ribbon-like white-light (WL) flare that is associated with a failed magnetic flux rope (MFR) eruption on 2015 January 13, which has no accompanying CME in the WL coronagraph. Observations by the. Optical and Near-infrared Solar Eruption Tracer and the Solar Dynamics Observatory reveal that with the increase of the flare emission and the acceleration of the unsuccessfully erupting MFR, two isolated kernels appear at the WL 3600 angstrom passband and quickly develop into two elongated ribbon-like structures. The evolution of the WL continuum enhancement is completely coincident in time with the variation of Fermi hard X-ray 26-50 keV flux. An increase of continuum emission is also clearly visible at the whole FUV and NUV passbands observed by the. Interface Region Imaging Spectrograph. Moreover, in one WL kernel, the Si IV, C II, and Mg II h/k lines display significant enhancement and non-thermal broadening. However, their Doppler velocity pattern is location-dependent. At the strongly bright pixels, these lines exhibit a blueshift, while at moderately bright ones, the lines are generally redshifted. These results show that the failed MFR eruption is also able to produce a two-ribbon flare and high-energy electrons that heat the lower atmosphere, causing the enhancement of the WL and FUV/NUV continuum emissions and chromospheric evaporation. Spread spectrum communication requires several operational processes. First, the informational signal should be encoded by some pseudorandom code into a broad bandwidth signal (e.g., frequency hopping). The transmitted signal should have the capability of anti-jamming or interference during the transmission. Second, the transmitted signal, which is at high bandwidth, must be decoded at the receiving end to give rise to the low bandwidth informational signal. The decoding process requires a synchronous psuedorandom reference code. Third, the informational signal may or may not be error correction coded and hence requires an appropriate decoding process. In this study the author investigates the utilization of a white-light or incoherence optical correlator for the signal decoding.

Progress has been made on the white-light optical information processing and holography research program. Work was completed on a broad band color image deblurring and this technique was extended to the restoration of 2-D out-of-focused color photographic images. A new technique of white-light density pseudocolor encoder was developed for three primary colors. This white-light pseudocolor encoder is very cost effective and offers a high image resolution, which would be an excellent alternation for the digital counterpart. We have also in this period conducted a measuring technique for the degree of coherence in the Fourier plane of the grating-based white-light signal processor. We have shown that high degree of coherence is achievable with a signal sampling grating at the input plane. Thus the white-light technique is capable of processing the information in complex amplitude and it is very suitable for color signal processing. In this phase of research we have also studied the effect of coherence due to source encoding, signal sampling and spectral band filtering, as applied to the white-light signal processing.

LaAlO 3 :Dy 3+ (LAO:Dy 3+ ) with blue-yellow emission for brilliant white light of light-emitting diodes (LEDs) was prepared using gel-combustion process. The chemical content of the created material was confirmed using energy dispersive X-ray analysis (EDX). The transmission electron microscopy was used to examine the phosphor crystal size and morphology. The luminescence analysis showed that LAO:Dy 3+ phosphors exhibited peaks at 482 nm (blue) and 574 nm (yellow), attributed to the transitions 4F 9/2 à 6H 15/2 and 4F 9/2 à 6H 13/2, respectively. The investigating of correlated color temperature (CCT) and Commission International de L'Eclairage (CIE) described that the phosphor LAO:Dy 3+ helped to attained good CCT coordination and bright cool-white emission under ultraviolet (UV) stimulation. However, when using in white LED fabrication, the concentration of LAO:Dy 3+ should be modified to fulfill the need from manufactures. According to results from this work, the white light luminescence intensity and color rendering performance may be reduced if the LAO:Dy 3+ is high (>10%) because of too much scattering. On the other hand, such scattering improvements offered by LAO:Dy 3+ phosphor is beneficial to reduce the color deviance for better color uniformity of light.

The first X-class flare of the current solar cycle 24 occurred in Active Region NOAA 11158 during its central meridian passage on 2011 February 15. This two ribbon white-light flare was well observed by the Helioseismic and Magnetic Imager (HMI) on board Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO). During the peak phase of the flare, we detected magnetic and Doppler velocity transients appearing near the umbral boundary of the main sunspot. These transients persisted for a few minutes and showed spatial and temporal correspondence with the flare kernels. The observed magnetic polarity at the transients' locations underwent sign reversal, together with large enhancement in Doppler velocities. We explain this observational phenomena using the HMI spectral data obtained before, during and after the flare. These changes were reflected in the maps of the AR in all the Stokes parameters. Association of the transient features with various signatures of the flare and the cause and effects of their appearance are also presented on the basis of present theoretical models.

This work focus on the first results on the identification and characterization of periodic plasma density fluctuations in the outer corona, observed in STEREO-A COR1 white-light image time series. A 2D reconstruction of the spatial distribution and temporal evolution of the coronal fluctuation power has been performed over the whole plane of the sky, from 1.4 to 4.0 solar radii. The adopted diagnostic tool is based on wavelet transforms. This technique, with respect to the standard Fourier analysis, has the advantage of localizing non-persistent fluctuating features and exploring the variations of the relating wavelet power in both space and time. The map of the variance of the coronal brightness clearly outlines intermittent, spatially coherent fluctuating features, localized along, or adjacent to, the strongest magnetic field lines. In most cases they do not correspond to the coronal structures visible in the brightness maps. The results obtained provide a scenario in which the solar corona shows quasi-periodic, non-stationary density variations characterized by a wide range of temporal and spatial scales and strongly confined by the magnetic field topology. In addition, structures fluctuating with larger power are larger in size and evolve more slowly. The characteristic periodicities of the fluctuations are comparable to their lifetimes. This suggests either that plasma fluctuations lasting only one or two wave periods and initially characterized by a single dominant periodicity, rapidly decay into a turbulent mixed flow via nonlinear interactions with other plasma modes, or that they are damped by thermal conduction. Observations of flare emissions in the optical continuum are very rare. Therefore, the analysis of such observations is useful and may contribute to our understanding of the flaring chromosphere and photosphere. We study the white light continuum emission observed during the X6.9 flare which occurred on August 09, 2011. This emission comes not only from the flare ribbons but also from the nearby plage area. The main aim of this work is to disentangle the flare and plage (facula) emission. We analyzed the spatial, spectral and temporal evolution of the flare and plage properties by analyzing multi-wavelength observations. We study the morphological correlation of the whitelight continuum emission observed with different instruments. We found that some active region areas which produce the continuum emission correspond rather to plages than to the flare kernels. We showed that in some cases the continuum emission from the WL flare kernels is very similar to the continuum emission of faculae.

Double-degenerate (DD) mergers of carbon-oxygen white dwarfs have recently emerged as a leading candidate for normal Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia). However, many outstanding questions surround DD mergers, including the characteristics of their light curves and spectra. We have recently identified a spiral instability in the post-merger phase of DD mergers and demonstrated that this instability self-consistently leads to detonation in some cases. We call this the spiral merger SN Ia model. Here, we utilize the SuperNu radiative transfer software to calculate three-dimensional synthetic light curves and spectra of the spiral merger simulation with a system mass of 2.1 $M_\odot$ from Kashyap et al. Because of their large system masses, both violent and spiral merger light curves are slowly declining. The spiral merger resembles very slowly declining SNe Ia, including SN 2001ay, and provides a more natural explanation for its observed properties than other SN Ia explosion models. Previous synthetic light curves and spectra of violent DD mergers demonstrate a strong dependence on viewing angle, which is in conflict with observations. Here, we demonstrate that the light curves and spectra of the spiral merger are less sensitive to the viewing angle than violent mergers, in closer agreement with observation. We find that the spatial distribution of 56Ni and IMEs follows a characteristic hourglass shape. We discuss the implications of the asymmetric distribution of 56Ni for the early-time gamma-ray observations of 56Ni from SN 2014J. We suggest that DD mergers that agree with the light curves and spectra of normal SNe Ia will likely require a lower system mass.

Abstract Studies in Polar Base stations, where personnel have no access to sunlight during winter, have reported circadian misalignment, free-running of the sleep-wake rhythm, and sleep problems. Here we tested light as a countermeasure to circadian misalignment in personnel of the Concordia Polar Base station during the polar winter. We hypothesized that entrainment of the circadian pacemaker to a 24-h light-dark schedule would not occur in all crew members (n = 10) exposed to 100–300 lux of standard fluorescent white (SW) light during the daytime, and that chronic non-time restricted daytime exposure to melanopsin-optimized blue-enriched white (BE) light would establish an a stable circadian phase, in participants, together with increased cognitive performance and mood levels. The lighting schedule consisted of an alternation between SW lighting (2 weeks), followed by a BE lighting (2 weeks) for a total of 9 weeks. Rest-activity cycles assessed by actigraphy showed a stable rest-activity pattern under both SW and BE light. No difference was found between light conditions on the intra-daily stability, variability and amplitude of activity, as assessed by non-parametric circadian analysis. As hypothesized, a significant delay of about 30 minutes in the onset of melatonin secretion occurred with SW, but not with BE light. BE light significantly enhanced well being and alertness compared to SW light. We propose that the superior efficacy of blue-enriched white light versus standard white light involves melanopsin-based mechanisms in the activation of the non-visual functions studied, and that their responses do not dampen with time (over 9-weeks). This work could lead to practical applications of light exposure in working environment where background light intensity is chronically low to moderate (polar base stations, power plants, space missions, etc.), and may help design lighting strategies to maintain health, productivity, and personnel safety.

Light at 410 nanometers is affected by the sizes and compositions of cloud particles, as well as the trace chemicals that give Jupiter's clouds their colors. This mosaic shows the features of Jupiter's main visible cloud deck and the hazy cloud layer above it. Oval cloud systems of this type are often associated with chaotic cyclonic systems such as the balloon shaped vortex seen here between the well formed ovals. This system is centered near 30 degrees south planetocentric latitude and 100 degrees west longitude and rotates in a clockwise sense about its center. The oval shaped vortices in the upper half of the mosaic are two of the three long-lived White Ovals that formed to the south of the Red Spot in the 1930's and, like the Red Spot, rotate in a counterclockwise sense. The east to west dimension of the leftmost White Oval is 9000 kilometers (km). (The diameter of the Earth is 12,756 km.) The White Ovals drift in longitude relative to one another, and are presently restricting the cyclonic structure. The interaction between these two cyclonic storm systems is producing high, thick cumulus-like clouds in the southern part of the more northerly trapped system. North is at the top of this mosaic. The smallest resolved features are tens of kilometers in size. These images were taken on February 19, 1997, at a range of 1.1 million kilometers by the Solid State Imaging (CCD) system aboard NASA's Galileo spacecraft. We generate double-charge white-light optical vortices by sending a circularly polarized partially incoherent light through an uniaxial crystal. We show that the generated polichromatic vortices are structurally stable, and their correlation properties can be altered by the beam focusing, resulting in changes of the vortex core visibility.

During the second year (FY'82) a great deal of progress has been made on the white-light optical information processing and holography research program. In this period, we have evaluated the coherence requirement, source encoding, and signal sampling concept for the proposed white-light optical signal processor. We have shown that the spatial coherence requirement is governed by source distributions, while the temporal coherence requirement is controlled by spatial frequency bandwidth of the input signal and the grating sampling frequency. In order to alleviate the basic constraints of a white-light source, we have developed a source encoding and signal sampling concept, so that the information can be processed in complex amplitude for the entire spectral band of the white-light source. We have also evaluated an apparent transfer function for the proposed white-light signal processor. We have shown that the MTF is dependent upon the degree of spatial and temporal coherence. The derived apparent transfer function is very general, which can be applied to any partially coherent optical processor. Since the proposed white-light signal processor is very suitable for color image processing, we have, in this period, also demonstrated several color image processing capabilities. Among those are broadband color image deblurring and color image subtraction. From those results, we have seen high quality deblurred color images and subtracted color images can be performed by the proposed white-light optical processor. We have also in this period evaluated the primary aberrations and the bandwidth requirements for rainbow holographic processes. The conditions for the removal of the five primary aberrations are also determined. (Author)

Several studies showed the interesting properties of trivalent lanthanide ions when doped in various types of phosphor. Magnesium sulfoborate phosphor doped with different concentrations of Dy3+ were synthesized using solid-state reaction method at 850 °C for 4 hours. The samples were characterized by X-ray Diffraction (XRD). The excitation and luminescence properties of MgO-SO4-B2O3:Dy3+ were determined. The emission spectrum of Dy3+ ion doped MgO-SO4-B2O3 phosphor exhibit three bands at 480 nm, 573 nm and 660 nm with excitation of 386 nm due to 4F9/2 →6H15/2, 6H13/2 and 6H11/2 of Dy3+ transitions, respectively. The excitation spectrum of Dy3+ ion doped MgOSO4-B2O3 phosphor display several bands at 347 nm, 362 nm, 386 nm, 426 nm, 449 nm and 469 nm with emission of 573 nm, which is in agreement with the ultraviolet LED (349.9–410 nm) and blue LED (450–470 nm). An intense in the emission peak at 573 nm in the yellow region was observed with the 0.5 Dy2O3. The luminescence properties of phosphor show that MgO-SO4-B2O3:Dy3+ phosphor could be potentially used as white LEDs

We analyze the effects of noise and parameter deviations in a bichromatic Raman type white light cavity, with potential applications in precision measurements such as gravitational wave detection. The results show that the dispersion variation induced by parameter deviation can be controlled within $10^{-4}$. The laser phase noise decreases the dispersion magnitude while the amplitude noise increases it. Although we can always adjust the parameters to satisfy the white light condition, both noises make the cavity transmission curve uneven.
