NASA-Goddard Space Flight Center has initiated a new project designed to expand on existing news services and add value to classrooms through the development and distribution of two-minute 'mini-supplements' which give context and teach about current weather and Earth research phenomena. The other goal is to enable on-air broadcasters to serve as distributors of high quality, standards-based educational curricula and supplemental material when they visit 8-12 grade classrooms. The focus of 'pilot effort' centers around the success of NASA's Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) but is likely expandable to other NASA earth or space science missions.

This paper contains sample exercises that investigate weather and air quality relationships for use in college-level introductory courses in climatology and meteorology. The exercises will provide students with an opportunity to apply meteorological principles to a specific geographic location, in an effort to better understand the significant role that weather plays in enhancing or reducing air pollution levels. The first part of the paper discusses the general characteristics of the five air pollutants to be studied in the exercises--ozone, sulfur dioxide, total suspended particles, carbon monoxide, and nitrogen dioxide. The second half of the paper contains tables and graphs describing ozone pollution and weather conditions in Chicago and a detailed discussion of specific methods that students can use to analyze these tables and graphs. This detailed discussion is intended to provide by example procedures that students can utilize in their investigation of the other four air pollutants. (Author/RM)

This collection of notes discusses the various types of severe- weather air masses, how severe weather systems form, which parameters best define the existence and intensity of severe weather, and how to use local information to better forecast the occurrence of phenomena at individual stations. Specifically, wind gust and hail size forecasting techniques and the usefulness of various stability indexes are presented. Also, a chapter on severe weather in tropical air masses is included. A number of detailed case studies are in the report to help the reader visualize how forecasting concepts are applied, and to emphasize the importance of forecasting experience. The revised material concentrates on the application of computer-derived aids to severe weather forecasting produced by the Air Force Global Weather Central. Foremost among these aids are analyses and prognoses of the Severe Weather Threat (SWEAT) Index.

The rate of events measured with the surface detector of the Pierre Auger Observatory is found to be modulated by the weather conditions. This effect is due to the increasing amount of matter traversed by the shower as the ground pressure increases and to the inverse proportionality of the Moliere radius to the air density near ground. Air-shower simulations with different realistic profiles of the atmosphere support this interpretation of the observed effects.

This is a PowerPoint presentation NASA airline operations center (AOC) research. It includes information on using IBM Watson in the AOC. It also reviews a dispatcher decision support tool call the Flight Awareness Collaboration Tool (FACT). FACT gathers information about winter weather onto one screen and includes predictive abilities. It should prove to be useful for airline dispatchers and airport personnel when they manage winter storms and their effect on air traffic. This material is very similar to other previously approved presentations with the same title.

This study discusses the possible role of air pollution and influence on air quality (AQ) and weather over southern Africa. Although it has long been thought that a lotof pollution occurs in the industrialized regions of the Northern Hemisphere, it is quite clear that a vast amount is also generated in the south, and southern Africa contributes significantly. Since industrial revolution, the sub-continent has become one of the major sources of atmospheric emissions mainly from human-induced activities to meet demand for energy supply and other lifelong needs. The main sources include biomass burning (BB), Aeolian dust and industrial emissions. In the process, trace components generated can negatively impact the atmosphere through aerosol influence on cloud properties and radiation budget, and also affect human health. While anthropogenic emissions are enhanced during winter, natural emissions occur and fluctuate throughout the year. In the case of dust aerosols, they are common over the Kalahari-Namib Desert where dust devils frequently develop overland, keeping the air filled with haze.Commongas pollutants include carbon monoxide (CO), sulphur-and nitrogen oxides(SOxand NOx) from the copper belt(Zambia),Highveld(South Africa), BB-dominated areas and other isolated locations. In particular, a high degree of correlation between weather and pollution in urban source centers and the effect of weather on human health are of special interest. In most cases, humans are exposed to high pollutant levels likely exceeding AQ standards. We propose that more attention should be paid to the rapidly increasing regional pollution levels, as experience from other regions suggest that this can alter climate and AQ composition.

This report summarizes current processes and information sources used when convective weather impacts Air Traffic Control (ATC) operations at the Air Traffic Control System Command Center (ATCSCC) and Kansas City Air Route Traffic Control Center (ARTCC). In addition, user needs for convective weather forecast products are presented. ACT-32O collected information from both facilities through site visits and interviews during the early summer of 2000. Based upon collected information, it is recommended that the integration of a convective weather forecast capability, for example, the National Convective Weather Forecast (NCWF), into the Traffic Situation Display (TSD) be investigated. In addition, further research should be conducted to extend the forecase period of current automated forecast products.

Weather-related losses of remotely piloted aircraft (RPA) have exceeded $100 million over the past 20 years (Preisser and Stutzreim, 2015). The growing ubiquity of RPAs in routine combat operations is driving fundamental changes to the nature of support for these unmanned aircraft. Support requirements such as bandwidth availability, data transmission capabilities, digital interoperability, and weather forecasting are being pushed to unprecedented limits to ensure they enhance RPA performance without imposing superfluous constraints. A persistent trend plaguing RPA operators has been poor environmental situational awareness degrading overall operational effectiveness. The impact of suboptimal weather forecasting, especially regarding adverse weather conditions, on RPAs is significant, and it is driving an increasing need for fundamental changes to a system that has matured over several decades of proven operational success with manned aircraft. Without humans in the cockpit, the nature and frequency of weather forecasting processes and supporting technologies must evolve to enable optimized RPA operational performance by providing weather products that achieve high levels of resolution, accuracy, and timeliness.
