1Fermi And The Theory Of Weak Interactions
By G. Rajasekaran
The history of weak interactions starting with Fermi's creation of the beta decay theory and culminating in its modern avatar in the form of the electroweak gauge theory is described. Discoveries of parity violation, matter-antimatter asymmetry, W and Z bosons and neutrino mass are highlighted.

2The Quenched Generating Functional For Hadronic Weak Interactions
By E. Pallante
The ultraviolet behaviour of the generating functional for hadronic weak interactions with $|\Delta S| =1, 2$ is investigated to one loop for a generic number of flavours and in the quenched approximation. New quenched chiral logarithms generated by the weak interactions can be accounted for via a redefinition of the weak mass term in the $\Delta S=\pm 1$ weak effective Lagrangian at leading order. Finally, we illustrate how chiral logarithms are modified by the quenched approximation in $K\to\pi\pi$ matrix elements with $\Delta I=1/2$ and 3/2.

3On Weak Interactions As Short-distance Manifestations Of Gravity
By Roberto Onofrio
We conjecture that weak interactions are peculiar manifestations of quantum gravity at the Fermi scale, and that the Fermi constant is related to the Newtonian constant of gravitation. In this framework one may understand the violations of fundamental symmetries by the weak interactions, in particular parity violations, as due to fluctuations of the spacetime geometry at a Planck scale coinciding with the Fermi scale. As a consequence, gravitational phenomena should play a more important role in the microworld, and experimental settings are suggested to test this hypothesis.

4Closed-shell Ring Coupled Cluster Doubles Theory With Range Separation Applied On Weak Intermolecular Interactions
By Julien Toulouse, Wuming Zhu, Andreas Savin, Georg Jansen and János G. Angyán
We explore different variants of the random phase approximation (RPA) to the correlation energy derived from closed-shell ring-diagram approximations to coupled cluster doubles theory. We implement these variants in range-separated density-functional theory, i.e. by combining the long-range random phase approximations with short-range density-functional approximations. We perform tests on the rare-gas dimers He_2, Ne_2, and Ar_2, and on the weakly interacting molecular complexes of the S22 set of Jurecka et al. [Phys. Chem. Chem. Phys. 8, 1985 (2006)]. The two best variants correspond to the ones originally proposed by Szabo and Ostlund [J. Chem. Phys. 67, 4351 (1977)]. With range separation, they reach mean absolute errors on the equilibrium interaction energies of the S22 set of about 0.4 kcal/mol, corresponding to mean absolute percentage errors of about 4 %, with the aug-cc-pVDZ basis set.

6Weak Axial Nuclear Heavy Meson Exchange Currents And Interactions Of Solar Neutrinos With Deuterons
By B. Mosconi, P. Ricci and E. Truhlik
Starting from the axial heavy meson exchange currents, constructed earlier in conjunction with the Bethe--Salpeter equation, we first present the axial $\rho$--, $\omega$-- and $a_1$ meson exchange Feynman amplitudes that satisfy the partial conservation of the axial current. Employing these amplitudes, we derive the corresponding weak axial heavy meson exchange currents in the leading order in the 1/M expansion ($M$ is the nucleon mass), suitable for the nuclear physics calculations beyond the threshold energies and with wave functions obtained by solving the Schr\"odinger equation with one--boson exchange potentials. The constructed currents obey the nuclear form of the partial conservation of the axial current. We apply the space component of these currents in calculations of the cross sections for the disintegration of deuterons by low energy (anti)neutrinos. The deuteron and the final state nucleon--nucleon wave functions are derived (i) from a variant of the OBEPQB potential, and (ii) from the Nijmegen 93 and Nijmegen I nucleon-nucleon interaction. The extracted values of the constant $L_{1, A}$, entering the axial exchange currents of the pionless effective field theory, are in a reasonable agreement with its value predicted by the dimensional analysis.

8Electromagnetism In Nonleptonic Weak Interactions
By G. Ecker, G. Isidori, G. Mueller, H. Neufeld and A. Pich
We construct a low-energy effective field theory that permits the complete treatment of isospin-breaking effects in nonleptonic weak interactions to next-to-leading order. To this end, we enlarge the chiral Lagrangian describing strong and Delta S=1 weak interactions by including electromagnetic terms with the photon as additional dynamical degree of freedom. The complete and minimal list of local terms at next-to-leading order is given. We perform the one-loop renormalization at the level of the generating functional and specialize to K -> pi pi decays.

9Neutrino Oscillations Due To Nonuniversal Gauge Interactions In The Weak Sector
By Ehab Malkawi
We discuss the structure of the neutrino mass matrix as derived from a nonuniversal electroweak gauge interaction model. We discuss two interesting patterns of neutrino masses. The first pattern is hierarchal which fits the LMA or LOW solutions of solar neutrino data. The second pattern gives rise to inverted mass spectrum which fits the currently not preferred SMA solution. The mechanism for generating a light sterile neutrino mass is interesting and is briefly discussed.

10Neutron Star Equilibrium Configurations Within A Fully Relativistic Theory With Strong, Weak, Electromagnetic, And Gravitational Interactions
By Riccardo Belvedere, Daniela Pugliese, Jorge A. Rueda, Remo Ruffini and She-Sheng Xue
We formulate the equations of equilibrium of neutron stars taking into account strong, weak, electromagnetic, and gravitational interactions within the framework of general relativity. The nuclear interactions are described by the exchange of the sigma, omega, and rho virtual mesons. The equilibrium conditions are given by our recently developed theoretical framework based on the Einstein-Maxwell-Thomas-Fermi equations along with the constancy of the general relativistic Fermi energies of particles, the "Klein potentials", throughout the configuration. The equations are solved numerically in the case of zero temperatures and for selected parametrization of the nuclear models. The solutions lead to a new structure of the star: a positively charged core at supranuclear densities surrounded by an electronic distribution of thickness $\sim \hbar/(m_e c)$ of opposite charge, as well as a neutral crust at lower densities. Inside the core there is a Coulomb potential well of depth $\sim m_\pi c^2/e$. The constancy of the Klein potentials in the transition from the core to the crust, impose the presence of an overcritical electric field $\sim (m_\pi/m_e)^2 E_c$, the critical field being $E_c=m^2_e c^3/(e \hbar)$. The electron chemical potential and the density decrease, in the boundary interface, until values $\mu^{\rm crust}_e < \mu^{\rm core}_e$ and $\rho_{\rm crust}

11Non-entropic Theory Of Rubber Elasticity: Flexible Chains With Weak Excluded-volume Interactions
By A. D. Drozdov
Strain energy density is calculated for a network of flexible chains with weak excluded-volume interactions (whose energy is small compared with thermal energy). Constitutive equations are developed for an incompressible network of chains with segment interactions at finite deformations. These relations are applied to the study of uniaxial and equi-biaxial tension (compression), where the stress--strain diagrams are analyzed numerically. It is demonstrated that intra-chain interactions (i) cause an increase in the Young's modulus of the network and (ii) induce the growth of stresses (compared to an appropriate network of Gaussian chains), which becomes substantial at relatively large elongation ratios. The effect of excluded-volume interactions on the elastic response strongly depends on the deformation mode, in particular, it is more pronounced at equi-biaxial tension than at uniaxial elongation.

13Electro-Weak Interactions In Light Nuclei
By Doron Gazit
In this thesis, conducted in the field of few--body nuclear physics,I studied low energy inelastic reactions of electro--weak probes on light nuclei. Such interactions hold experimental and theoretical attention in recent years because of the role they play in various fields of physics, stretching from checking the standard model limits; through nuclear structure and dynamics research; up to microscopic interaction in astrophysical phenomena, such as supernova explosion and the nucleosynthesis of the elements. The reactions considered in this work are: (i) Neutrino interaction with A=3 and $^4$He nuclei, in energies typical to core-collapse supernova. For $^4$He both the neutral and charged current reactions were calculated, whereas only neutral current reactions are calculated for A=3 nuclei. (ii) Photoabsorption on $^4$He. This long standing problem has been the attraction of theoretical and experimental efforts in the last three decades. The calculations make use of two novel methods. the Lorentz Integral Transform (LIT) method, which is used to transform the scattering problem to a bound state like problem. The resulting equations are solved using the Effective Interaction in the Hyperspherical Harmonics (EIHH) method.

14Resonance Reactions And Enhancement Of Weak Interactions In Collisions Of Cold Molecules
By V. V. Flambaum and J. S. M. Ginges
With the creation of ultracold atoms and molecules, a new type of chemistry - "resonance" chemistry - emerges: chemical reactions can occur when the energy of colliding atoms and molecules matches a bound state of the combined molecule (Feshbach resonance). This chemistry is rather similar to reactions that take place in nuclei at low energies. In this paper we suggest some problems for future experimental and theoretical work related to the resonance chemistry of ultracold molecules. Molecular Bose-Einstein condensates are particularly interesting because in this system collisions and chemical reactions are extremely sensitive to weak fields; also, a preferred reaction channel may be enhanced due to a finite number of final states. The sensitivity to weak fields arises due to the high density of narrow compound resonances and the macroscopic number of molecules with kinetic energy E=0 (in the ground state of a mean-field potential). The high sensitivity to the magnetic field may be used to measure the distribution of energy intervals, widths, and magnetic moments of compound resonances and study the onset of quantum chaos. A difference in the production rate of right-handed and left-handed chiral molecules may be produced by external electric and magnetic fields and the finite width of the resonance. The same effect may be produced by the parity-violating energy difference in chiral molecules.

15Weak Spin Interactions In Mott Insulating La2O2Fe2OSe2
By E. E. McCabe, C. Stock, E. E. Rodriguez, A. S. Wills, J. W. Taylor and J. S. O. Evans
Identifying and characterizing the parent phases of iron-based superconductors is an important step towards understanding the mechanism for their high temperature superconductivity. We present an investigation into the magnetic interactions in the Mott insulator La2O2Fe2OSe2. This iron oxyselenide adopts a 2-k magnetic structure with low levels of magnetic frustration. This magnetic ground state is found to be dominated by next-nearest neighbor interactions J2 and J2' and the magnetocrystalline anisotropy of the Fe2+ site, leading to 2D-Ising-like spin S=2 fluctuations. In contrast to calculations, the values are small and confine the spin excitations below ~ 25 meV. This is further corroborated by sum rules of neutron scattering. This indicates that superconductivity in related materials may derive from a weakly coupled and unfrustrated magnetic structure.

19Weak Values Could Reveal The Hidden Effects Of Quantum Interactions
By Miao Zhang
Due to the reduced probability of successful post-selection, the weak-value amplification seems to be unavailable for the parameter-estimation. Here, we show theoretically that, some effects due to the weak interactions present only in the properly post-selected sub-ensemble, however are canceled by themselves in the total ensemble. From this point of view, the post-selection induced weak value could be one of the feasible methods for measuring the weak interaction, since the standard measurement does not work. Additionally, we employ the system of trapped ions to simulate the weak measurement and calculate relevant results without the frequently-used weak interaction approximation.

20Generating Functional For Strong And Nonleptonic Weak Interactions
By R. Unterdorfer and G. Ecker
The generating functional for Green functions of quark currents is given in closed form to next-to-leading order in the low-energy expansion for chiral SU(3), including one-loop amplitudes with up to three meson propagators. Matrix elements and form factors for strong and nonleptonic weak processes with at most six external states can be extracted from this functional by performing three-dimensional flavour traces. To implement this procedure, a Mathematica program is provided that evaluates amplitudes with at most six external mesons, photons (real or virtual) and virtual W (semileptonic form factors). The program is illustrated with several examples that can be compared with existing calculations.

21Non-leptonic Weak Decays And Final State Interactions In Lattice QCD

We show that, under a reasonable "smoothness" hypothesis, it is possible to extract informations on the amplitude and phase of two-body non-leptonic weak decay matrix elements from the study of Euclidean correlation functions in lattice QCD.

22Weak Interactions Of Supersymmetric Staus At High Energies
By Yiwen Huang, M. H. Reno, I. Sarcevic and J. Uscinski
Neutrino telescopes may have the potential to detect the quasi-stable staus predicted by supersymmetric models. Detection depends on stau electromagnetic energy loss and weak interactions. We present results for the weak interaction contribution to the energy loss of high energy staus as they pass through rock. We show that the neutral current weak interaction contribution to the energy loss increases with energy, but it is much smaller than the photonuclear energy loss, however, the charged current contribution may become the dominant process above the energy of $\sim 10^9$ GeV, depending on the parameters of the model. As a consequence, the stau range may be reduced above $\sim 10^9$ GeV as compared to the range neglecting weak interactions. We contrast this with the tau range which is barely changed with the inclusion of charged current interactions.

23Flavor Changing Interactions Mediated By Scalars At The Weak Scale
By Aram Antaramian, Lawrence J. Hall and Andrija Rašin
The quark and lepton mass matrices possess approximate flavor symmetries. Several results follow if the interactions of new scalars possess these approximate symmetries. Present experimental bounds allow these exotic scalars to have a weak scale mass. The Glashow-Weinberg criterion is rendered unnecessary. Finally, rare leptonic B meson decays provide powerful probes of these scalars, especially if they are leptoquarks.

26NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS) 19750004171: Weak Incident Shock Interactions With Mach 8 Laminar Boundary Layers. [of Flat Plate
By NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS)
Weak shock-wave interactions with boundary layers on a flat plate were investigated experimentally in Mach 8 variable-density tunnel for plate-length Reynolds numbers. The undisturbed boundary layers were laminar over the entire plate length. Pressure and heat-transfer distributions were obtained for wedge-generated incident shock waves that resulted in pressure rises ranging from 1.36 to 4.46 (both nonseparated and separated boundary-layer flows). The resulting heat-transfer amplifications ranged from 1.45 to 14. The distributions followed established trends for nonseparated flows, for incipient separation, and for laminar free-interaction pressure rises. The experimental results corroborated established trends for the extent of the pressure rise and for certain peak heat-transfer correlations.

29A Non-Commutative Geometric Approach To Left-Right Symmetric Weak Interactions
By B. E. Hanlon and G. C. Joshi
By combining the generalized exterior algebra of forms over a noncommutative algebra with the gauging of discrete directions and the associated Higgs fields, we consider the construction of the bosonic sector of left-right symmetric models of the form $SU(2)_{L}\otimes SU(2)_{R}\otimes U(1)$. We see that within this formalism maximal use can be made of the gauge connection associated with the non-commutative graded algebra.

30Quantum Interference Effects In The Detection Probability Of Charged Leptons Produced In Charged Current Weak Interactions
By J. H. Field
The phases of quantum interference effects in charged lepton production by neutrinos (neutrino oscillations) following pion decay at rest and in flight, muon decay and nuclear $\beta-$decay at rest as well as for `muon oscillations' following pion decay at rest and in flight are calculated. The same phase is found for neutrino and muon oscillations following pion decay at rest. The results found disagree with the conventionally used value: $\phi_{12} = \Delta m^2 L/(2P)$. Differences to previous treatments are briefly commented on

31Particle Physics On Ice: Constraints On Neutrino Interactions Far Above The Weak Scale
By Luis A. Anchordoqui, Jonathan L. Feng and Haim Goldberg
Ultra-high energy cosmic rays and neutrinos probe energies far above the weak scale. Their usefulness might appear to be limited by astrophysical uncertainties; however, by simultaneously considering up- and down-going events, one may disentangle particle physics from astrophysics. We show that present data from the AMANDA experiment in the South Pole ice already imply an upper bound on neutrino cross sections at energy scales that will likely never be probed at man-made accelerators. The existing data also place an upper limit on the neutrino flux valid for any neutrino cross section. In the future, similar analyses of IceCube data will constrain neutrino properties and fluxes at the O(10%) level.

3214th International Workshop On Weak Interactions: Concluding Remarks
By F. Halzen
This superbly organized workshop invited the participants to focus on four outstanding questions in weak interactions: i) is the electroweak model correct at the quantum level? ii)supersymmetry? iii) neutrino mass? iv) what is the nature of CP-violation? The meeting demonstrated how weak-interaction physics has become a terrain successfully covered by accelerator and non-accelerator experiments in a very complimentary way.

33Unification Of Weak And Hypercharge Interactions At The TeV Scale
By Lawrence J. Hall and Yasunori Nomura
A realistic SU(3)_C x SU(3)_W unified theory is constructed with a TeV sized extra dimension compactified on the orbifold S_1/Z_2, leaving only the standard model gauge group SU(3)_C x SU(2)_L x U(1)_Y unbroken in the low energy 4D theory. The Higgs doublets are zero modes of bulk SU(3)_W triplets and serve to normalize the hypercharge generator, apparently giving a tree-level prediction for the weak mixing angle: \sin^2\theta = 1/4. The orbifold boundary conditions imply a restricted set of SU(3)_W gauge transformations: at an orbifold fixed point only the transformations of SU(2)_L x U(1)_Y are operative. This allows quarks to be located at this fixed point, overcoming the longstanding problem of how to incorporate matter in a unified SU(3)_W theory. However, in general this local, explicit breaking of SU(3)_W symmetry, necessary for including quarks into the theory, destroys the tree-level prediction for the weak mixing angle. This apparent contradiction is reconciled by making the volume of the extra dimension large, diluting the effects of the local SU(3)_W violation. In the case that the electroweak theory is strongly coupled at the cutoff scale of the effective theory, radiative corrections to the weak mixing angle can be reliably computed, and used to predict the scale of compactification: 1 - 2 TeV without supersymmetry, and in the region of 3 - 6 TeV for a supersymmetric theory. The experimental signature of electroweak unification into SU(3)_W is a set of ``weak partners'' of mass 1/2R, which are all electrically charged and are expected to be accessible at LHC. These include weak doublets of gauge particles of electric charge (++,+), and a charged scalar. When pair produced, they yield events containing multiple charged leptons, missing large transverse energy and possibly Higgs and electroweak gauge bosons.

34Gauge Theory Of Weak Interactions
By Greiner, Walter, 1935-
A realistic SU(3)_C x SU(3)_W unified theory is constructed with a TeV sized extra dimension compactified on the orbifold S_1/Z_2, leaving only the standard model gauge group SU(3)_C x SU(2)_L x U(1)_Y unbroken in the low energy 4D theory.

35Molecular Bose-Einstein Condensate As An Amplifier Of Weak Interactions
By V. V. Flambaum and J. S. M. Ginges
Collisions and chemical reactions of molecules in Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) are extremely sensitive to weak fields. This sensitivity arises due to the high density of compound resonances and a macroscopic number of molecules with kinetic energy E=0 (perfect energy resolution). We suggest that chemical reactions in molecular BECs could be used to enhance effects produced by small external perturbations and search for a parity-violating energy difference in chiral molecules.

37NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS) 19790005659: An Experiment To Verify That The Weak Interactions Satisfy The Strong Equivalence Principle. [electron Capture And Gravitational Potential
By NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS)
The construction of a clock based on the beta decay process is proposed to test for any violations by the weak interaction of the strong equivalence principle bu determining whether the weak interaction coupling constant beta is spatially constant or whether it is a function of gravitational potential (U). The clock can be constructed by simply counting the beta disintegrations of some suitable source. The total number of counts are to be taken a measure of elapsed time. The accuracy of the clock is limited by the statistical fluctuations in the number of counts, N, which is equal to the square root of N. Increasing N gives a corresponding increase in accuracy. A source based on the electron capture process can be used so as to avoid low energy electron discrimination problems. Solid state and gaseous detectors are being considered. While the accuracy of this type of beta decay clock is much less than clocks based on the electromagnetic interaction, there is a corresponding lack of knowledge of the behavior of beta as a function of gravitational potential. No predictions from nonmetric theories as to variations in beta are available as yet, but they may occur at the U/sg C level.

40CP Violation And Strong Pion-pion Interactions In The Weak B Charged Decays Into Three Charged Pions
By B. Loiseau, J. -P. Dedonder, A. Furman, R. Kaminski and L. Lesniak
An analysis of charged B decay data in a quasi two-body decay into a charged pion plus a S, P,or D state of two charged pions is performed in the QCD factorization framework. The short distance amplitudes are calculated including next-to-leading order corrections in the strong coupling constant for vertex and penguin contributions. The long distance amplitudes due to the two charged pion final state interactions are described by the pion non-strange scalar and vector form factors for the two-pion S- and P-wave states, respectively and by a relativistic Breit-Wigner formula for the D-wave state. We achieve a good fit of the data with only three parameters for the S wave, one for the P wave and one for the D wave. Our model gives a unified unitary description of the three scalar resonances, f_0(600), f_0(980) and f_0(1400) in terms of the pion scalar form factor. We predict for the B to f_2(1270) transition form factor a value of 0.098+-0.007 at a momentum transfer square equal to the pion-mass square.

42Weak Interactions In Atoms And Nuclei: The Standard Model And Beyond
By M. J. Ramsey-Musolf and J. Secrest
Studies in nuclear and atomic physics have played an important role in developing our understanding of the Standard Model of electroweak interactions. We review the basic ingredients of the Standard Model, and discuss some key nuclear and atomic physics experiments used in testing these ideas. We also summarize the conceptual issues of the Standard Model that motivate the search for new physics.

By Defense Technical Information Center
We will investigate air-sea transfer of momentum, heat, and moisture under weak wind conditions. We will focus on effects of swell on turbulence transfer since swell phase speeds can be much faster than weak wind and swell can have significant impacts on air-sea interactions. Improved understanding of wave effects on marine atmospheric turbulent fluxes under weak wind conditions will be used to modify the existing bulk aerodynamic formula for numerical models.

50DTIC ADA334797: Weak Interactions Of Boron, Aluminum, And Carbon Atoms: Experiment
By Defense Technical Information Center
A primary goal of this project has been the characterization of non-bonding interactions of the boron atom, in its ground and, resonance-excited electronic states with the hydrogen molecule and rare gases. These interaction potentials are critical ingredients in the theoretical modeling of cryogenic media doped with isolated boron atoms. Since electronic spectroscopy is the primary diagnostic tool in the experimental investigation of such doped cryogenic matrices, knowledge of the interaction between the matrix species and dopant in both its ground and electronically excited states is required to interpret such spectra. Because of the need for a close interaction between experiment and theory in the elucidation of the dopant-matrix bimolecular interactions and the structure of small complexes of these species, we have collaborated very closely with the group of Professor Millard H. Alexander, of the University of Maryland, who has also been funded by AFOSR for this work.
