The Washington Monument is in the background.; The smokejumper program was first established in the U.S. in 1939 as a way to provide quick initial response to forest fire by parachuting firefighters into the fires, a. We are fortunate to have a few early photos. Smokejumping has always had hazards: 12 smokejumpers died in the Mann Gulch Fire of 1949, and 12 again in the 1994 South Canyon Fire. In spite of the risks, there are currently nine smokejumping crews in the U.S., seven of those with the Forest Service. The collection includes aerial equipment used in wildland firefighting.

This radar image of the Washington, D.C. area demonstrates the capability of imaging radar as a useful tool for urban planners and managers to map and monitor land use patterns. The image was acquired by the Spaceborne Imaging Radar-C/X- band Synthetic Aperture Radar (SIR-C/X-SAR) aboard the space shuttle Endeavour on its 150th orbit on April 18, 1994. North is toward the upper right. The Potomac River enters the scene at the top of the image, widens near the center of the image, then runs south and west off the left side of the image. Downtown Washington appears near the center, just to the right of the point where the river widens. The image shows an area 50.3 kilometers by 45.0 kilometers (31.2 miles by 27.9 miles) that is centered at 38.9 degrees north latitude and 77.1 degrees west longitude. The radar illumination is from the left side of the image. The image shows a single channel of SIR- C radar data: L-band, horizontally transmitted and received. State and city boundaries are also visible in the image. Virginia is to the left (southwest) of the Potomac River. Maryland and the District of Columbia are to the right (northeast). The avenues that form the boundary between Maryland and the District of Columbia appear as bright lines because the radar strikes the walls of buildings along the avenues at a perpendicular angle. The dark strip near the center of the image is the National Mall, and the Ellipse and White House grounds can be seen as an adjacent dark patch. The Capital Beltway highway appears as a thin black strip encircling the city. The large dark rectangle near the bottom of the image is Andrews Air Force Base, home of the presidential plane Air Force One. Wheat states that "students of early Wyoming history will sometimes find Holt their most helpful cartographic tool." With a paste down ad for Holt's map on the inside front cover - "The only reliable and accurate map of Wyoming ever published." Border color by county. Map is folded into stamped dark brown cloth covers 16.5x12 with "Holt's New Map Of Wyoming Published By Geo. L. Holt Cheyenne 1885." in gilt. Shasta to the Sierras west of Pyramid Lake. This Quarto issue of the report is the House issue, except for volume XI which is the Senate issue. W. Heckrotte has an unusual copy of the Warren U.S. map found in this report. It is dissected on linen and is an earlier version of the map published with the Quarto report. It has 40 authorities vs. 42 in the quarto issue map, shorter note to left of authorities, lots of plate differences, especially: nothing in Owyhee area, differences in N.M., Calif., etc. Looks like someone asked for the map before it was finished -see the Lack of ocean lines in the top half south of Gray's Harbor. In 13 volumes. Bound in full leather with "Explorations and Surveys for a Railroad to the Pacific Ocean" and the volume number on the spine in gold. WC 262.

Shows townships and sections, landowners, acreages, railroads, schools, churches, farm houses, timbered areas, etc. This is very much in the Andreas Minnesota Atlas style - Warner and Beers in fact collaborated with Andreas and did the coloring on the Minnesota Atlas. This 1876 edition bears little resemblance to the earlier 1871 edition by Warner, Higgins & Beers (see our #3749) which used entirely different maps and had no views. Bound in half leather dark brown cloth covered boards with "Atlas of Illinois 1876 illustrated" stamped in gold on the front and blind stamped on the back. Phillips, 1513; LeGear Atlas of the United States, L4062; Phillips Maps of America, p. 330.

The copyright date is 1876, so it is probably similar to that edition. There are many changes, as one would hope (or expect) between this and the 1869 edition, both in graphic composition and topography. The map has been completely reengraved by S.B.Linton (the original engraver) and shows much of the General Land Office surveys. It is so full of detail as to be difficult to read in many areas. Two views are added: the Capital-Nevada, and University-California. The 1888 edition is reengraved completely yet again (WH's copy). This copy belonged to Lewis M. Clement, Chief Engineer of the Atlantic & Pacific Railroad. The inside of the case flap closure reads "Lewis M. Clement, Chief Engineer of the Atlantic & Pacific Railroad - Office: Safe Deposit Building Room 8 - San Francisco, Cal." in calligraphic manuscript. The map is slightly trimmed at the bottom (affecting only the decorative border) in order to fit into his custom brown cloth case 28x17. Map has outline color, is in two sheets (Northern and Southern halves), each undissected and mounted on linen. See note field above. cf Vogdes p203 (1876 edition); Wheat 1202 (1869 edition).

Many views, several of which have extensive biographical text with them. Higgins, Belden & Co. published five county atlases, all in Indiana. This is one of the most elaborate and attractive county atlases we have seen. Full color. At the end is a full printed color Rand McNally folding map of the United States which has appeared in several county atlases and other atlases and gazetteers of the period (although this may be a very early version since the atlas was published in 1874 and most of the other examples of the map are in books dated 1875). Higgins also worked with F.W. Beers, A. Warner, and D.J. Lake. Pages 55-56 missing. P12841; Ristow p.417-18.

Rosenberg and Grafton in "Cartographies of Time" say that as a timeline, Adams Synchronological Chart "was ninetheenth-century America's surpassing achievement in complexity and synthetic power." see note field above Rosenberg and Grafton, pp 171-177.
