1How Major Are Volcanoes? With Professor Chris Jackson
By Getting Curious with Jonathan Van Ness
Since 1997, Jonathan has been haunted by a question: could a volcano erupt a la Dante's Peak and turn a local creek into a river of hot acid? This week, Professor Chris Jackson answers all of Jonathan's burning questions about how volcanoes are formed, what happens when they erupt, and how Pierce Brosnan's character in Dante's Peak would have fared against a real pyroclastic flow.Chris Jackson is Chair in Sustainable Geoscience at the University of Manchester and spent 16 years at Imperial College. Chris works in the general area of sedimentary basin analysis. When not studying rocks, Chris gives geoscience lectures to the public and schools, and he's appeared on several Earth Science-focused television productions and podcasts. Chris is engaged in efforts to improve equality, diversity, and inclusivity in Higher Education. He runs, too! You can follow Professor Jackson on Twitter @seis_matters, and on Instagram @christopher.aiden.lee.jackson.Want to learn more about volcanoes? 10NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS) 19720024684: Thermal Surveillance Of Volcanoes
By NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS)
The author has identified the following significant results. A systematic aircraft program to monitor changes in the thermal emission from volcanoes of the Cascade Range has been initiated and is being carried out in conjunction with ERTS-1 thermal surveillance experiments. Night overflights by aircraft equipped with thermal infrared scanners sensitive to terrestrial emission in the 4-5.5 and 8-14 micron bands are currently being carried out at intervals of a few months. Preliminary results confirm that Mount Rainier, Mount Baker, Mount Saint Helens, Mount Shasta, and the Lassen area continue to be thermally active, although with the exception of Lassen which erupted between 1914 and 1917, and Mount Saint Helens which had a series of eruptions between 1831 and 1834, there has been no recent eruptive activity. Excellent quality infrared images recorded over Mount Rainier, as recently as April, 1972, show similar thermal patterns to those reported in 1964-1966. Infrared images of Mount Baker recorded in November 1970 and again in April 1972 revealed a distinct array of anomalies 1000 feet below the crater rim and associated with fumaroles or structures permitting convective heat transfer to the surface.

12Volcanoes : Disaster & Survival
By Buckwalter, Stephanie

25Volcanoes
By Walker, Colin

27Topography And Volcanoes On Io (color)
By NASA
The images used to create this enhanced color composite of Io were acquired by NASA's Galileo spacecraft during its seventh orbit (G7) of Jupiter. Low sun angles near the terminator (day-night boundary near the left side of the image) offer lighting conditions which emphasize the topography or relief on the volcanic satellite. The topography appears very flat near the active volcanic centers such as Loki Patera (the large dark horse-shoe shaped feature near the terminator) while a variety of mountains and plateaus exist elsewhere. The big reddish-orange ring in the lower right is formed by material deposited from the eruption of Pele, Io's largest volcanic plume. North is to the top of this picture which merges images obtained with the clear, red, green, and violet filters of the solid state imaging (CCD) system on NASA's Galileo spacecraft. The resolution is 6.1 kilometers per picture element. The images were taken on April 4th, 1997 at a range of 600,000 kilometers. The Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Pasadena, CA manages the Galileo mission for NASA's Office of Space Science, Washington, DC. JPL is an operating division of California Institute of Technology (Caltech). Concurrent results from Galileo's exploration of Io appear in the October 15th, 1997 issue of Geophysical Research Letters. The papers are: * Temperature and Area Constraints of the South Volund Volcano on Io from the NIMS and SSI Instruments during the Galileo G1 Orbit, by A.G. Davies, A.S. McEwen, R. Lopes-Gautier, L. Keszthelyi, R.W. Carlson and W.D. Smythe. * High-temperature hot spots on Io as seen by the Galileo Solid-State Imaging (SSI) experiment, by A. McEwen, D. Simonelli, D. Senske, K. Klassen, L. Keszthelyi, T. Johnson, P. Geissler, M. Carr, and M. Belton. * Io: Galileo evidence for major variations in regolith properties, by D. Simonelli, J. Veverka, and A. McEwen. This image and other images and data received from Galileo are posted on the World Wide Web, on the Galileo mission home page at URL http://galileo.jpl.nasa.gov. 29ERIC ED232640: Volcanoes. MicroSIFT Courseware Evaluation.
By ERIC
THE FOLLOWING IS THE FULL TEXT OF THIS DOCUMENT (Except for the Evaluation Summary Table): VERSION: 1.4E. PRODUCER: Earthware Computer Services, P.O. Box 30039, Eugene, OR 07403. EVALUATION COMPLETED: June 1982 by staff of NWREL and constituents of the Alaska Department of Education. COST: $49.50. ABILITY LEVEL: Secondary and College. SUBJECT: Earth Sciences/Geology: Volcanoes. MEDIUM OF TRANSFER: 5 1/4" flexible disk. REQUIRED HARDWARE: Apple II or Apple II Plus, one disk drive, a color monitor or TV with RF modulator (a B & W will work). REQUIRED SOFTWARE: Applesoft, DOS 3.3. INSTRUCTIONAL PURPOSE: Standard instruction and enrichment. INSTRUCTIONAL TECHNIQUES: Game/simulation. DOCUMENTATION AVAILABLE: In computer program: program operating instructions, student's instructions. In supplementary materials: instructional objectives, sample program output, program operation instructions, pretest, posttest, teacher's information, resource/reference information, student's instructions, student worksheets, follow-up activities, glossary of terms. INSTRUCTIONAL OBJECTIVES: The program teaches volcanic terminology, the types of volcanoes, methods and results of remote sensing surveys, interpretation of bar graphs, keeping careful records and interpretation of scientific observations. INSTRUCTIONAL PREREQUISITES: Knowledge of the terms included in the documentation; knowledge of the various methods of surveying a volcanic region. This information is included in the documentation. CONTENT AND STRUCTURE: Package consists of two diskettes, two Blue Books (user reference manuals), two sets of reproducible maps and one teacher's manual. Two to three players are assigned areas on a map by the computer. Each player is assigned a research fund and skill level. Players must conduct simulated scientific surveys, such as infrared scans, of their areas and predict volcanic eruptions. Players keep records, dispense a research budget, plan research strategies and evaluate research results. ESTIMATED STUDENT TIME REQUIRED: Two to four hours. POTENTIAL USES: Volcanoes could be used to supplement a high school geology or earth science class which covers volcanism. The package could also be used with advanced upper elementary and junior high school students. The teacher would need to provide students with adequate background information and time in order to successfully complete the simulation game. MAJOR STRENGTHS: The background information and instructor's manual are very well written. A pretest, posttest and helpful bibliography are included. Volcanoes allows the student to simulate the role of a volcanologist and provides insight into the role of a research scientist and the science of volcanology. MAJOR WEAKNESSES: Students had some difficulty learning what to do to successfully predict an eruption. It would be helpful to have the computer print a list of current conditions, i.e., gases, recent seismic activity, location of hot spots, etc. This would give student more of an opportunity to get a "feel" for expected eruptions. EVALUATION SUMMARY: Evaluators indicate they would use or recommend use of this package with little or no change. (Author)

32NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS) 19740003072: Volcanic Activity And Satellite-detected Thermal Anomalies At Central American Volcanoes
By NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS)
The author has identified the following significant results. A large nuee ardente eruption occurred at Santiaguito volcano, within the test area on 16 September 1973. Through a system of local observers, the eruption has been described, reported to the international scientific community, extent of affected area mapped, and the new ash sampled. A more extensive report on this event will be prepared. The eruption is an excellent example of the kind of volcanic situation in which satellite thermal imagery might be useful. The Santiaguito dome is a complex mass with a whole series of historically active vents. It's location makes access difficult, yet its activity is of great concern to large agricultural populations who live downslope. Santiaguito has produced a number of large eruptions with little apparent warning. In the earlier ground survey large thermal anomalies were identified at Santiaguito. There is no way of knowing whether satellite monitoring could have detected changes in thermal anomaly patterns related to this recent event, but the position of thermal anomalies on Santiaguito and any changes in their character would be relevant information.

41Shiveluch And Klyuchevskaya Volcanoes: Natural Hazards
By NASA -- NASA Image Of The Day
A distance of about 80 kilometers (50 miles) separates Shiveluch and Klyuchevskaya Volcanoes on Russia's Kamchatka Peninsula. Despite this distance, however, the two acted in www.spacemart.com/reports/Volcanic_Eruptions_In_Kamchatka_999.html unison on April 26, 2007, when the Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer asterweb.jpl.nasa.gov (ASTER) on NASA's terra.nasa.gov Terra satellite caught them both erupting simultaneously. ASTER ''sees'' a slightly different portion of the light spectrum than human eyes. Besides a portion of visible light, ASTER detects thermal energy, meaning it can detect volcanic activity invisible to human eyes. Inset in each image above is a thermal infrared picture of the volcano's summit. In these insets, dark red shows where temperatures are coolest, and yellowish-white shows where temperatures are hottest, heated by molten lava. Both insets show activity at the crater. In the case of Klyuchevskaya, some activity at the crater is also visible in the larger image. In the larger images, the landscapes around the volcanoes appear in varying shades of blue-gray. Dark areas on the snow surface are likely stains left over from previous eruptions of volcanic ash. Overhead, clouds dot the sky, casting their shadows on the snow, especially southeast of Shiveluch and northeast of Klyuchevskaya. To the northwest of Klyuchevskaya is a large bank of clouds, appearing as a brighter white than the snow surface. www.volcano.si.edu/world/volcano.cfm?vnum=1000-27= Shiveluch (sometimes spelled Sheveluch) and www.volcano.si.edu/world/volcano.cfm?vnum=1000-26= Klyuchevskaya (sometimes spelled Klyuchevskoy or Kliuchevskoi) are both composed of alternating layers of hardened lava, solidified ash, and rocks from earlier eruptions. Both volcanoes rank among Kamchatka's most active. Because Kamchatka is part of the Pacific www.pbs.org/edens/kamchatka/ring.html ''Ring of Fire,'' the peninsula experiences regular seismic activity as the Pacific Plate slides below other tectonic plates in the Earth's crust. Large-scale plate tectonic activity causing simultaneous volcanic eruptions in Kamchatka is not uncommon. You can download a eoimages.gsfc.nasa.gov/images/imagerecords/18000/18338/kamchatka_ast_2007116.kmz 15-meter-resolution Kamchatka KMZ file which includes Shiveluch and Klyuchevskaya for use with earth.google.com/download-earth.html Google Earth. NASA image created by Jesse Allen, using data provided courtesy of the NASA/GSFC/MITI/ERSDAC/JAROS, and U.S./Japan asterweb.jpl.nasa.gov/ ASTER Science Team.

43Congo Volcanoes Erupt: Natural Hazards
By NASA -- NASA Image Of The Day
The borderland between Rwanda, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and Uganda contains eight volcanoes, including Mount Nyamulagira and Mount Nyiragongo, which were both erupting on May 25, 2004. The volcanoes are both located north of Lake Kivu in Virunga National Park. The dense tropical forests of the park are home to endangered mountain gorillas. The www.awf.org/news/17081 African Wildlife Foundation does not believe that the eruptions will threaten the gorillas' habitat, but cautions that ash may contaminate drinking water sources and food crops, forcing local people to turn to the park for material. Mount Nyamulagira is Africa's most active volcano. Its neighbor 14 kilometers (9 miles) to the northwest, Nyiragongo has the world's fastest flowing lava. In 2002, 500,000 people in Goma were displaced when Nyiragongo erupted. Neither of this week's eruptions have been reported to have caused damage, though ash falls have been reported within 60 kilometers (37 miles) of the volcanoes. The modis.gsfc.nasa.gov Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA's terra.nasa.gov/ Terra satellite captured this image of the eruptions on May 25, 2004. The large image shows the scene in true color. Red dots around Mount Nyiragongo indicate a thermal anomaly, and may be flowing lava or fires near the volcano. The inset shows the scene immediately around the volcanoes in false color to differentiate between cloud and the aerosol plumes. The plumes, which are a darker orange than the surrounding clouds, may be ash and steam or smoke from the fires around the volcanoes. Vegetation is dark green. The high-resolution image shows the scene in natural color at MODIS' maximum resolution of 250 meters per pixel. NASA image courtesy Jesse Allen, based on data from the rapidfire.sci.gsfc.nasa.gov MODIS Rapid Response Team at GSFC

44NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS) 20000010816: Deformation Of Alaskan Volcanoes, Measured By Satellite Radar Inferometry
By NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS)
The purpose of this project was to determine the suitability of measuring active deformation of volcanoes in Alaska using Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (INSAR) techniques. Work sponsored by this grant supported one graduate student (for almost 2 years) and one postdoc (for several months), and has resulted in two published peer-reviewed papers and a front-page article in EOS. An additional paper is in review and a fourth is in preparation. An additional paper in preparation was based in part on research supported by this grant and in part by a successor grant from NASA's Solid Earth Natural Hazards program. Over the course of this research, we documented measurable uplift of Trident volcano in the Katmai group, conducted a systematic study of the change in phase coherence over time on volcanic surfaces, and measured and modeled the spectacular 1.5 m deflation of Okmok caldera associated with its 1997 eruption. We also generated initial interferograms spanning the 1996 seismic swarm of Akutan volcano; however, during the period covered by this project we were not able to remove topography. That has been done under the subsequent funding and a paper is now in preparation. This report summarizes work done under two separate contracts because both were based on the same proposal to NASA's ADRO (Application Development and Research Opportunity) program. The first year was funded out of a grant from NASA Headquarters and the second and third years out of a grant through Goddard. The work, however, was a continuous three year effort.
