This article is from Indian Journal of Pharmaceutical Sciences , volume 73 . Abstract Supercritical fluid extract and ethanol extract of Vitex negundo Linn. were subjected to the chromatographic evaluation for identification of their constituents. Free radical scavenging activity of both extracts was studied by subjecting them to DPPH assay. IC50 values of ethanol and supercritical fluid extract of Vitex negundo indicate that ethanol extract has stronger reducing potential and ability to scavenge free radicals as compared to the supercritical fluid extract. The in vivo effect of extracts on lipid peroxidation was studied using ethanol induced oxidative stress model in rat. Ingestion of extracts for 14 days exhibited significant reduction in plasma MDA level of stressed animals. Ethanol extract exhibited higher in vivo antilipid peroxidation potential as compared to supercritical fluid extract which correlated well with radical scavenging potential of extract.

Bound in half leather marbled paper covered boards with "Galerie agreable du monde Chine" stamped on the spine in gilt. Pieter van der Aa, a Dutch publisher and printer was best known for his cartographic work. He opened a bookshop and publishing house in Leiden in 1677, and started his first business there in 1683. By 1694 he was made printer to Leiden University, and by 1715, he was appointed the official printer to the town of Leiden. He gradually broadened his publishing scope and by the turn of the eighteenth century had moved into the publication of works on travel and topography. He produced a series of atlases and collections of voyages composed of plates acquired from other cartographers. His career culminated with the publishing of his illustrated atlas of the world, the “Galerie Agreable du Monde” made up of 66 volumes, the largest book of prints ever published. Only 100 copies are said to have been printed. The great work covers Europe, Asia, Africa and America, and although it professed to cover the entire world, due to the quantity of European material in Van der Aa's stock, 47 of the 66 parts cover Europe. The “Galerie” did not just cover geography, but also carried over 3,000 plates. Most of the plates were by other contemporary publishers, to which van der Aa added his signature broad decorative borders. Many of these views are among the earliest European made views of China. Black plum (Vitex doniana) juice has received limited attention in terms of comprehensive research on their proximate and anti-nutritional compositions. This study addresses this research gap by exploring the production of dry concentrate, single strength juice and 60% diluted seven juices samples (using different treatments). The investigation of their proximate and anti-nutritional compositions were performed, using standard analytical methods. Also the Juice samples were compared with commercial black currant juice drink. The results of proximate analysis of the dried concentrate revealed a moisture content of 18.85%, ash content of 4.47%, dietary fibre content of 30.14%, fat content of 2.07%, protein content of 8.69%, and carbohydrate content of 35.78%. The single strength juice had moisture content (59.88%), Ash (1.68%), Dietary fibre (11.08%), Fat (0.70%), Protein (2.36%) and Carbohydrate (24.30%). The juices with 60% dilution had moisture content ranging from 81.26% (SSI) to 86.81% (SSC), lower than the commercial juice CEX (90.68%). An increase in the mass of the pectinase enzyme significantly reduced the moisture content, increased the ash content, but increase in the incubation time had no significant difference in the ash content. Preheating (simmering) the fruit before processing did not affect the ash content too. Neither the mass of pectinase enzyme inoculated nor the length of the incubation significantly affected the total dietary fibre of the juice samples. Both increase in the mass of enzyme inoculated and the length of incubation time did not affect the fat content of the juices. The protein content of the juice decreased significantly (p ≤ 0.05) as the mass of the pectinase and the length of incubation and aslo the heating temperature and time increased. The carbohydrate content of the diluted juices was between 8.73% (SSC) and 14.37% (SSI). Statistically, SSC, SSD, SSE, SSF, SSG, and SSI have the same carbohydrate (in quality). SSI had a significantly higher carbohydrate (14.37%). The carbohydrate content of commercial juice (CEX) (9.18%) is much less and significantly lower than that of all processed juice samples. The result of the anti-nutrients showed the concentrate (SSA) and single strength juice (SSB) contain the Oxalate (10.64 and 3.75 mg/100g), followed by Saponin (5.31 and 1.96mg/100g), Tanin (4.82 and 1.95mg/100g), Phytate (3.91 and 1.94mg/100g) while Alkaloid (1.27 and 0.39mg/100g) respectively. The increase in pectinase significantly reduced none of the anti-nutrients. Simmering the fruit before obtaining the pulp used for the juices and increasing the preheating temperature had no significant effect on most of the anti-nutrients except for saponin, which was significantly decreased by the simmering. There were no significant differences (P ≥ 0.05) in the anti-nutrients when the simmering temperature was increased from 43°C to 51°C. Almost no anti-nutrient was in the commercial juice sample (CEX).

Abstract • Premise of the study: Microsatellite loci were developed for Vitex rotundifolia, an endangered species isolated to Lake Biwa, to investigate its genetic diversity and population structure.• Methods and Results: Ten primer sets were identified in Japanese populations of V. rotundifolia. The number of alleles per locus ranged from one to six and gene diversity per locus ranged from 0.040 to 0.697 between two populations. In addition, all loci could be successfully amplified in V. trifolia.• Conclusions: These markers will be useful for studies of genetic diversity and population structure of endangered species isolated to Lake Biwa of V. rotundifolia, to aid in the development of conservation strategies.

This article is from Iranian Journal of Basic Medical Sciences , volume 15 . Abstract Objective(s): There is well documented evidence for the increase in widespread use of complementary and alternative medicine in the treatment of physical and psychiatric symptoms and disorders within the populations. In the present study, we investigated the influence of Vitex agnus-castus (vitex) on anxiety-like behaviors of rats. Materials and Methods: Elevated plus maze which is one of the methods used for testing anxiety is used in our present study. Rats were orally administrated with vitex for two week. The anxiety test was carried out after two weeks of oral administration of vitex. For evaluating interaction of vitex and serotonergic systems, rats were anaesthetized with ketamine and special cannulas were inserted stereotaxically into the third ventricle (TV) of brain. After 1 week recovery, the effects of serotonegic agents on anxiety were studied. Results: Oral administration of vitex (100, 200, 300 mg/kg) for two weeks induced an anxiogenic-like effect which was shown through specific decreases in the percentages of open arm time (OAT %) and open arm entries (OAE %). Intra-TV infusion of 5HT1A receptor agonist, 8-OH-DPAT (5, 10 and 25 ng/rat) increased OAT% and OAE%, indicating anxiolytic–like behavior. However, injection of 5HT1A receptor antagonist NAN190 (0.25, 0.5 and 1 µg/rat) produced anxiogenic-like behavior. The most effective dose of 8-OH-DPAT (10 ng/rat), when co-administered with vitex (100, 200, 300 mg/kg), attenuated the anxiogenic-like effects of vitex significantly. Injection of the less effective dose of NAN190 (0.5 µg/rat), in combination with vitex (100, 200, 300 mg/kg), potentiate anxiogenic effects of vitex. Conclusions: These results illustrate that 5HT1A receptor is involved in the anxiogenic effects of vitex.

Vitex negundo  L. (Verbenaceae) is a hardy plant, mainly distributed in the Indian subcontinent. All parts of the plant, from root to fruit, possess a massive amount of phytochemical secondary metabolites which inform a unique variety of medicinal uses to the plant. The presence of secondary metabolites such as alkaloids, flavonoids, terpenoids and phenolic compounds in the various plant parts are dependable for the anti-oxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-microbial and anti-venom properties which are being revealed in the treatment of various diseases and so on. Cell and tissue culture would offer rapid propagation and conservation of the plant species and, from the position of outlook of phytochemistry, give possibility for enrichment of the quality and quantity of the bioactive secondary metabolites occurring in the plant This review aims at presenting widespread information on phytochemical constituents and beneficial uses which can be helpful in development of modern medicine.

The present study explores the potential usefulness of wild black plum (Vitex donia) seed from Ebonyi State; by assessment of nutritional and phytochemical attributes of the seed which is usually discarded as waste after consumption of the fruit pulp. Fat and protein were the major nutrients found in the seed, with values of 36.52% and 27.57% respectively. Fatty acid profile showed that monounsaturated oleic acid (58.54%) and saturated palmitic acid (34.24%) are the predominant fatty acids of the seed oil; while amino acid profile showed that thrionine (7.55%) and methionine (6.22%) constitute the major essential amino acids; and proline (8.64%) and glutamic acid (7.33%), the major non essential amino acids. Total essential amino acid content of 37.17% was recorded, indicating that the seed can be considered a good source of essential amino acids. Ash content was 5.18% and is an indication that the wild seed contains reasonable amounts of minerals. In terms of phytochemicals, appreciable amounts of alkaloids (11.40mg/100g) and flavonoids (3.75mg/100g) were recorded, in addition to high level of phenolic compounds (170mg/100g) which suggests that the seed could possess good antioxidant properties. The above findings are indications that great potential exists for wild black plum seed as good source of nutrients and phytochemicals.

Abstract Background:: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of the combination of vitex agnus castus extract, as a source of phytoestrogens, plus magnesium supplementation on osteogenic and angiogenic factors and callus formation in women with long bone fracture. Material and Methods:: In a double-blind randomized placebo controlled trial, 64 women with long bone fracture, 20-45 years old, were randomly allocated to receive 1) one Agnugol tablet (4 mg dried fruit extract of vitex agnus castus) plus 250 mg magnesium oxide (VAC + Mg group (n = 10)), 2) one Agnugol tablet plus placebo (VAC group (n = 15)), 3) placebo plus 250 mg magnesium oxide (Mg group (n = 12)), or 4) placebo plus placebo (placebo group (n = 14)) per day for 8 weeks. At baseline and endpoint of the trial, serum alkaline phosphatase, osteocalcin, and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) were measured together with radiological bone assessment. Results:: There were no significant differences in the characteristic aspects of concern between the four groups at baseline. Despite the increased level of alkaline phosphatase in the VAC group (188.33 ± 16.27 to 240.40 ± 21.49, P = 0.05), administration of VAC + Mg could not increase alkaline phosphatase activity. However, treatment with VAC + Mg significantly enhanced the osteocalcin level. The serum concentration of VEGF was increased in the VAC group (269.04 ± 116.63 to 640.03 ± 240.16, P < 0.05). Callus formation in the VAC + Mg group was higher than the other groups but the differences between the four groups were not significant (P = 0.39). No relevant side effect was observed in patients in each group. Conclusion:: Our results suggest that administration of vitex agnus castus plus magnesium may promote fracture healing. However, more studies need to further explore the roles of vitex agnus castus in fracture repair processes.

The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of methanol leaf extract of Vitex doniana MEVd on Cadmium chloride - induced toxicity in the liver and kidney of male Wistar rats was investigated. Twenty five male Wistar rats weighing 171.87 ± 7.86g were acclimatized for two weeks and subsequently randomized into five groups Group 1 rats were administered daily 1 ml distilled water control group group 2 were administered Cadmium chloride 10 mg kg b.w. only groups 3 and 4 were administered MEVd 200 and 400 mg kg b.w. respectively six hours prior administration of Cd 10 mg Cd kg b.w. and group 5 rats were administered MEVd 400 mg kg b.w. only.  The experiment lasted six weeks and all administration was carried out orally. The final body weights of the rats were recorded at the end of the experiment and afterwards the rats were sacrificed, blood was collected and the serum was subsequently prepared. The kidneys and liver were excised, weighed and then stored in 10 formalin for histological examination. The serum was used for the determination of urea, creatinine, Na , K , and Cl- concentrations, aspartate aminotransferase AST and alanine aminotransferase ALT activities and total bilirubin T-Bil concentration.  The results showed that exposure of the rats to Cd significantly p 0.05 increased kidney weight, serum urea, creatinine, Na , K , Cl- and total bilirubin concentrations as well as serum ALT and AST activities. Cd-induced toxicity also caused severe necrosis of the tubular epithelial cells in the nephrons and degeneration of the hepatocytes. Although both doses of the plant extract significantly ameliorated these changes, the amelioration at 200 mg kg body weight of the extract compared well with the control in most of the parameters investigated. In conclusion, the oral administration of methanol leaf extract of Vitex doniana ameliorated the Cd-induced toxicity related biochemical parameters and histological changes in the rats.  by Olajide, J. Abstract Background: Oxidative stress due to abnormal induction of reactive oxygen species (ROS) molecules is believed to be involved in the etiology of many diseases. Evidences suggest that ROS is involved in nephrotoxicity through frequent exposure to industrial toxic agents such as thioacetamide (TAA). The current investigation was designed to explore the possible protective effects of the leaves of Vitex negundo(VN) extract against TAA-induced nephrotoxicity in rats. Methods: Twenty four Sprague Dawleyrats were divided into four groups: (A) Normal control, (B) TAA (0.03% w/v in drinking water), (C) VN100 (VN 100 mg/kg + TAA) and (D) VN300 (VN 300 mg/kg + TAA). Blood urea and serum creatinine levels were measured,supraoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT) and malondialdehyde (MDA) levels of renal tissue were assayed. Histopathological analysis together with the oxidative stress nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate (NADPH) oxidase p22phox in kidney sections were examined in all experimental groups. Abstract Supercritical fluid extract of leaves of Vitex negundo was tested for its antimicrobial potential and was compared with that of ethanol extract, ether extract and hydrodistilled oil of leaves. The chemical constituents of extracts were studied by chromatographic techniques. Extracts were evaluated for antimicrobial potential against bacterial strains like Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus subtilis, Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and yeast Candida albicans. Extracts showed prominent antibacterial activity against Bacillus subtilis and Staphylococcus aureus. Supercritical fluid extract exhibited good antibacterial potential.
