3Ground States And Singular Vectors Of Convex Variational Regularization Methods
By Martin Benning and Martin Burger
Singular value decomposition is the key tool in the analysis and understanding of linear regularization methods. In the last decade nonlinear variational approaches such as $\ell^1$ or total variation regularizations became quite prominent regularization techniques with certain properties being superior to standard methods. In the analysis of those, singular values and vectors did not play any role so far, for the obvious reason that these problems are nonlinear, together with the issue of defining singular values and singular vectors. In this paper however we want to start a study of singular values and vectors for nonlinear variational regularization of linear inverse problems, with particular focus on singular one-homogeneous regularization functionals. A major role is played by the smallest singular value, which we define as the ground state of an appropriate functional combining the (semi-)norm introduced by the forward operator and the regularization functional. The optimality condition for the ground state further yields a natural generalization to higher singular values and vectors involving the subdifferential of the regularization functional. We carry over two main properties from the world of linear regularization. The first one is gaining information about scale, respectively the behavior of regularization techniques at different scales. This also leads to novel estimates at different scales, generalizing the estimates for the coefficients in the linear singular value expansion. The second one is to provide exact solutions for variational regularization methods. We will show that all singular vectors can be reconstructed up to a scalar factor by the standard Tikhonov-type regularization approach even in the presence of (small) noise. Moreover, we will show that they can even be reconstructed without any bias by the recently popularized inverse scale space method.

4Variational Methods In AdS/CFT
By T. Andrade, M. Banados and F. Rojas
We prove that the AdS/CFT calculation of 1-point functions can be drastically simplified by using variational arguments. We give a simple universal proof, valid for any theory that can be derived from a Lagrangian, that the large radius divergencies in 1-point functions can always be renormalized away (at least in the semiclassical approximation). The renormalized 1-point functions then follow by a simple variational problem involving only finite quantities. Several examples, a massive scalar, gravity, and renormalization flows, are discussed. Our results are general and can thus be used for dualities beyond AdS/CFT.

5A Remark On Natural Constraints In Variational Methods And An Application To Superlinear Schrödinger Systems
By Benedetta Noris and Gianmaria Verzini
For a regular functional J defined on a Hilbert space X, we consider the set N of points x of X such that the projection of the gradient of J at x onto a closed linear subspace V(x) of X vanishes. We study sufficient conditions for a constrained critical point of J restricted to N to be a free critical point of J, providing a unified approach to different natural constraints known in the literature, such as the Birkhoff-Hestenes natural isoperimetric conditions and the Nehari manifold. As an application, we prove multiplicity of solutions to a class of superlinear Schr\"odinger systems on singularly perturbed domains.

6Convex Variational Methods For Multiclass Data Segmentation On Graphs
By Egil Bae and Ekaterina Merkurjev
Graph-based variational methods have recently shown to be highly competitive for various classification problems of high-dimensional data, but are inherently difficult to handle from an optimization perspective. This paper proposes a convex relaxation for a certain set of graph-based multiclass data segmentation problems, featuring region homogeneity terms, supervised information and/or certain constraints or penalty terms acting on the class sizes. Particular applications include semi-supervised classification of high-dimensional data and unsupervised segmentation of unstructured 3D point clouds. Theoretical analysis indicates that the convex relaxation closely approximates the original NP-hard problems, and these observations are also confirmed experimentally. An efficient duality based algorithm is developed that handles all constraints on the labeling function implicitly. Experiments on semi-supervised classification indicate consistently higher accuracies than related local minimization approaches, and considerably so when the training data are not uniformly distributed among the data set. The accuracies are also highly competitive against a wide range of other established methods on three benchmark datasets. Experiments on 3D point clouds acquired by a LaDAR in outdoor scenes, demonstrate that the scenes can accurately be segmented into object classes such as vegetation, the ground plane and human-made structures.

7Adaptive Multilevel Monte Carlo Methods For Stochastic Variational Inequalities
By Evgenia Babushkina and Ralf Kornhuber
While multilevel Monte Carlo (MLMC) methods for the numerical approximation of partial differential equations with uncertain coefficients enjoy great popularity, combinations with spatial adaptivity seem to be rare. We present an adaptive MLMC finite element approach based on deterministic adaptive mesh refinement for the arising "pathwise" problems and outline a convergence theory in terms of desired accuracy and required computational cost. Our theoretical and heuristic reasoning together with the efficiency of our new approach are confirmed by numerical experiments.

8Polaron Variational Methods In The Particle Representation Of Field Theory : II. Numerical Results For The Propagator
By R. Rosenfelder and A. W. Schreiber
For the scalar Wick-Cutkosky model in the particle representation we perform a similar variational calculation for the 2-point function as was done by Feynman for the polaron problem. We employ a quadratic nonlocal trial action with a retardation function for which several ans\"atze are used. The variational parameters are determined by minimizing the variational function and in the most general case the nonlinear variational equations are solved numerically. We obtain the residue at the pole, study analytically and numerically the instability of the model at larger coupling constants and calculate the width of the dressed particle.

9Singularity In Potential, Perturbation And Variational Methods
By Yi-Bing Ding, Xue-Qian Li and Peng-Nian Shen
In this work, we carefully study the energy eigen-values and splitting of heavy quarkonia as there exist $1/r^3$ and $\delta^3(\vec r)$ singular terms in the potential which make a direct numerical solution of the Schr\"{o}dinger equation impossible. We compare the results obtained in terms of perturbation and variational methods with various treatments.

10NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS) 19970017777: Variational Methods In Design Optimization And Sensitivity Analysis For Two-Dimensional Euler Equations
By NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS)
Variational methods (VM) sensitivity analysis employed to derive the costate (adjoint) equations, the transversality conditions, and the functional sensitivity derivatives. In the derivation of the sensitivity equations, the variational methods use the generalized calculus of variations, in which the variable boundary is considered as the design function. The converged solution of the state equations together with the converged solution of the costate equations are integrated along the domain boundary to uniquely determine the functional sensitivity derivatives with respect to the design function. The application of the variational methods to aerodynamic shape optimization problems is demonstrated for internal flow problems at supersonic Mach number range. The study shows, that while maintaining the accuracy of the functional sensitivity derivatives within the reasonable range for engineering prediction purposes, the variational methods show a substantial gain in computational efficiency, i.e., computer time and memory, when compared with the finite difference sensitivity analysis.

11Casimir Energy And Variational Methods In AdS Spacetime
By Remo Garattini
Following the subtraction procedure for manifolds with boundaries, we calculate by variational methods, the Schwarzschild-Anti-de Sitter and the Anti-de Sitter space energy difference. By computing the one loop approximation for TT tensors we discover the existence of an unstable mode at zero temperature, which can be stabilized by the boundary reduction method. Implications on a foam-like space are discussed.

12The Electrostatic Persistence Length Calculated From Monte Carlo, Variational And Perturbation Methods
By M. Ullner, B. Jönsson, C. Peterson, O. Sommelius and B. Söderberg
Monte Carlo simulations and variational calculations using a Gaussian ansatz are applied to a model consisting of a flexible linear polyelectrolyte chain as well as to an intrinsically stiff chain with up to 1000 charged monomers. Addition of salt is treated implicitly through a screened Coulomb potential for the electrostatic interactions. For the flexible model the electrostatic persistence length shows roughly three regimes in its dependence on the Debye-H\"{u}ckel screening length, $\kappa^{-1}$.As long as the salt content is low and $\kappa^{-1}$ is longer than the end-to-end distance, the electrostatic persistence length varies only slowly with $\kappa^{-1}$. Decreasing the screening length, a controversial region is entered. We find that the electrostatic persistence length scales as $sqrt{\xi_p}/\kappa$, in agreement with experiment on flexible polyelectrolytes, where $\xi_p$ is a strength parameter measuring the electrostatic interactions within the polyelectrolyte. For screening lengths much shorter than the bond length, the $\kappa^{-1}$ dependence becomes quadratic in the variational calculation. The simulations suffer from numerical problems in this regime, but seem to give a relationship half-way between linear and quadratic. A low temperature expansion only reproduces the first regime and a high temperature expansion, which treats the electrostatic interactions as a perturbation to a Gaussian chain, gives a quadratic dependence on the Debye length. For a sufficiently stiff chain, the persistence length varies quadratically with $\kappa^{-1}$ in agreement with earlier theories.

13Variational Methods For Steady-state Darcy/Fick Flow In Swollen And Poroelastic Solids
By Tomáš Roubíček
Existence of steady states in elastic media at small strains with diffusion of a solvent or fluid due to Fick's or Darcy's laws is proved by combining usage of variational methods inspired from static situations with Schauder's fixed-point arguments. In the plain variant, the problem consists in the force equilibrium coupled with the continuity equation, and the underlying operator is non-potential and non-pseudomonotone so that conventional methods are not applicable. In advanced variants, electrically-charged multi-component flows through an electrically charged elastic solid are treated, employing critical points of the saddle-point type. Eventually, anisothermal variants involving heat-transfer equation are treated, too.

14Probing Vacuum With Variational Methods In Quantum Gravity
By Remo Garattini
We use variational methods to calculate quasilocal energy quantum corrections. A comparison with the effective potential calculated at quadratic order is made by means of gaussian wave functionals. The method is a particular case of the effective action for composite operators used in quantum field theory. In pure gravity the method is applied for the first time. Implications on the foam-like scenario are discussed.

17Variational And Level Set Methods In Image Segmentation
By Mitiche, Amar
We use variational methods to calculate quasilocal energy quantum corrections. A comparison with the effective potential calculated at quadratic order is made by means of gaussian wave functionals. The method is a particular case of the effective action for composite operators used in quantum field theory. In pure gravity the method is applied for the first time. Implications on the foam-like scenario are discussed.

19DTIC ADA573386: Continued Development Of 4D-Variational Data Assimilation And Adjoint-Based Methods Of Sensitivity Analysis And Applications Using ROMS
By Defense Technical Information Center
The scientific goals of this research project are: 1. To explore the factors (e.g. uncertainties in initial conditions versus those in surface forcing and boundary conditions) that limit the predictability of the circulation in regional ocean models in a variety of dynamical regimes; 2. To compare two state-of-the-art variational data assimilation strategies (4DVAR and IOM) and gain experience using both in regional ocean models; 3. To develop ensemble prediction techniques for regional ocean models; 4. Demonstrate the utility of the ROMS data assimilation framework in a real-time, sea-going environment for prediction studies in the Intra-Americas Sea (IAS) with particular emphasis in the Caribbean Sea. As such, we will demonstrate, as a proof of concept, the utility of adjoint modeling and 4DVAR data assimilation in a real-time operational setting, at sea.

20NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS) 19820025248: Variational Methods In Simultaneous Optimum Interpolation And Initialization
By NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS)
The duality between optimum interpolation and variational objective analysis, is reviewed. This duality is used to set up a variational approach to objective analysis which uses prior information concerning the atmospheric spectral energy distribution, in the variational problem. In the wind analysis example, the wind field is partitioned into divergent and nondivergent parts, and a control parameter governing the relative energy in the two parts is estimated from the observational data being analyzed by generalized cross validation, along with a bandwidth parameter. A variational approach to combining objective analysis and initialization in a single step is proposed. In a simple example of this approach, data, forecast, and prior information concerning atmospheric energy distribution is combined into a single variational problem. This problem has (at least) one bandwidth parameter, one partitioning parameter governing the relative energy in fast slow modes, and one parameter governing the relative weight to be given to observational and forecast data.

22NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS) 19920004245: Developments In Variational Methods For High Performance Plate And Shell Elements
By NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS)
High performance elements are simple finite elements constructed to deliver engineering accuracy with coarse arbitrary grids. This is part of a series on the variational foundations of high-performance elements, with emphasis on plate and shell elements constructed with the free formulation (FF) and assumed natural strain (ANS) methods. Parameterized variational principles are studied that provide a common foundation for the FF and ANS methods, as well as for a combination of both. From this unified formulation a variant of the ANS formulation, called the assumed natural deviatoric strain (ANDES) formulation, emerges as an important special case. The first ANDES element, a high-performance 9 degrees of freedom triangular Kirchhoff plate bending element, is briefly described to illustrate the use of the new formulation.

28Comparison Of Reduced-order, Sequential And Variational Data Assimilation Methods In The Tropical Pacific Ocean
By Céline Robert, Eric Blayo and Jacques Verron
This paper presents a comparison of two reduced-order, sequential and variational data assimilation methods: the SEEK filter and the R-4D-Var. A hybridization of the two, combining the variational framework and the sequential evolution of covariance matrices, is also preliminarily investigated and assessed in the same experimental conditions. The comparison is performed using the twin-experiment approach on a model of the Tropical Pacific domain. The assimilated data are simulated temperature profiles at the locations of the TAO/TRITON array moorings. It is shown that, in a quasi-linear regime, both methods produce similarly good results. However the hybrid approach provides slightly better results and thus appears as potentially fruitful. In a more non-linear regime, when Tropical Instability Waves develop, the global nature of the variational approach helps control model dynamics better than the sequential approach of the SEEK filter. This aspect is probably enhanced by the context of the experiments in that there is a limited amount of assimilated data and no model error.

29Time-Fractional KdV Equation For The Plasma In Auroral Zone Using Variational Methods
By El-Said A. El-Wakil, Essam M. Abulwafa, Emad K. Elshewy and Aber A. Mahmoud
The reductive perturbation method has been employed to derive the Korteweg-de Vries (KdV) equation for small but finite amplitude electrostatic waves. The Lagrangian of the time fractional KdV equation is used in similar form to the Lagrangian of the regular KdV equation. The variation of the functional of this Lagrangian leads to the Euler-Lagrange equation that leads to the time fractional KdV equation. The Riemann-Liouvulle definition of the fractional derivative is used to describe the time fractional operator in the fractional KdV equation. The variational-iteration method given by He is used to solve the derived time fractional KdV equation. The calculations of the solution with initial condition A0*sech(cx)^2 are carried out. Numerical studies have been made using plasma parameters close to those values corresponding to the dayside auroral zone. The effects of the time fractional parameter on the electrostatic solitary structures are presented.

30Some Remarks On Causality Theory And Variational Methods In Lorentzian Manifolds
By Miguel Sanchez
In this conference published in 1997 some problems on the geodesics of a Lorentzian manifold concerning causality and infinite-dimensional variational methods, are pointed out. Even though a big progress on many of these questions have been carried out since then, some computations in this paper may be useful and have not been published elsewhere. Among them, for example, the following one (Section 3). Consider a spacetime which can be written globally as a product $R x M$, such that the natural vector field associated to the coordinate $t$ in $R$ is timelike. When is this spacetime globally hyperbolic with Cauchy hypersurfaces the slices $t=$ constant?

31Outer Approximation Methods For Solving Variational Inequalities In Hilbert Space
By Aviv Gibali, Simeon Reich and Rafal Zalas
In this paper we study variational inequalities in a real Hilbert space, which are governed by a strongly monotone and Lipschitz continuous operator $F$ over a closed and convex set $C$. We assume that the set $C$ can be outerly approximated by the fixed point sets of a sequence of certain quasi-nonexpansive operators called cutters. We propose an iterative method the main idea of which is to project at each step onto a particular half-space constructed by using the input data. Our approach is based on a method presented by Fukushima in 1986, which has recently been extended by several authors. In the present paper we establish strong convergence in Hilbert space. We emphasize that to the best of our knowledge, Fukushima's method has so far been considered only in the Euclidean setting with different conditions on $F$. We provide several examples for the case where $C$ is the common fixed point set of a finite number of cutters with numerical illustrations of our theoretical results.

The variational framework for learning inducing variables (Titsias, 2009a) has had a large impact on the Gaussian process literature. The framework may be interpreted as minimizing a rigorously defined Kullback-Leibler divergence between the approximating and posterior processes. To our knowledge this connection has thus far gone unremarked in the literature. In this paper we give a substantial generalization of the literature on this topic. We give a new proof of the result for infinite index sets which allows inducing points that are not data points and likelihoods that depend on all function values. We then discuss augmented index sets and show that, contrary to previous works, marginal consistency of augmentation is not enough to guarantee consistency of variational inference with the original model. We then characterize an extra condition where such a guarantee is obtainable. Finally we show how our framework sheds light on interdomain sparse approximations and sparse approximations for Cox processes.

34Diffuse Interface Methods For Multiple Phase Materials: An Energetic Variational Approach
By J. Brannick, C. Liu, T. Qian and H. Sun
In this paper, we introduce a diffuse interface model for describing the dynamics of mixtures involving multiple (two or more) phases. The coupled hydrodynamical system is derived through an energetic variational approach. The total energy of the system includes the kinetic energy and the mixing (interfacial) energies. The least action principle (or the principle of virtual work) is applied to derive the conservative part of the dynamics, with a focus on the reversible part of the stress tensor arising from the mixing energies. The dissipative part of the dynamics is then introduced through a dissipation function in the energy law, in line with the Onsager principle of least energy dissipation. The final system, formed by a set of coupled time-dependent partial differential equations, reflects a balance among various conservative and dissipative forces and governs the evolution of velocity and phase fields. To demonstrate the applicability of the proposed model, a few two-dimensional simulations have been carried out, including (1) the force balance at the three-phase contact line in equilibrium, (2) a rising bubble penetrating a fluid-fluid interface, and (3) a solid particle falling in a binary fluid. The effects of slip at solid surface have been examined in connection with contact line motion and a pinch-off phenomenon.

36Variational Methods For Phononic Calculations
By Yan Lu and Ankit Srivastava
Three fundamental variational principles used for solving elastodynamic eigenvalue problems are studied within the context of elastic wave propagation in periodic composites (phononics). We study the convergence of the eigenvalue problems resulting from the displacement Rayleigh quotient, the stress Rayleigh quotient and the mixed quotient. The convergence rates of the three quotients are found to be related to the continuity and differentiability of the density and compliance variation over the unit cell. In general, the mixed quotient converges faster than both the displacement Rayleigh and the stress Rayleigh quotients, however, there exist special cases where either the displacement Rayleigh or the stress Rayleigh quotient shows the exact same convergence as the mixed-method. We show that all methods converge faster for smoother material property variations, but when density variation is rough, the difference between the mixed quotient and stress Rayleigh quotient is higher and similarly, when compliance variation is rough, the difference between the mixed quotient and displacement Rayleigh quotient is higher. Since eigenvalue problems such as those considered in this paper tend to be highly computationally intensive, it is expected that these results will lead to fast and efficient algorithms in the areas of phononics and photonics.

37A Novel Discrete Variational Derivative Method Using "average-difference Methods"
By Daisuke Furihata, Shun Sato and Takayasu Matsuo
We consider structure-preserving methods for conservative systems, which rigorously replicate the conservation property yielding better numerical solutions. There, corresponding to the skew-symmetry of the differential operator, that of difference operators is essential to the discrete conservation law. Unfortunately, however, when we employ the standard central difference operator, the simplest one, the numerical solutions often suffer from undesirable spatial oscillations. In this letter, we propose a novel "average-difference method," which is tougher against such oscillations, and combine it with an existing conservative method. Theoretical and numerical analysis in the linear case show the superiority of the proposed method.

39Path Integral Variational Methods For Strongly Correlated Systems
By T. S. Walhout, R. Cenni, A. Fabrocini and S. Fantoni
We introduce a new approach to highly correlated systems which generalizes the Fermi Hypernetted Chain and Correlated Basis Function techniques. While the latter approaches can only be applied to systems for which a nonrelativistic wave function can be defined, the new approach is based on the variation of a trial hamiltonian within a path integral framework and thus can also be applied to relativistic and field theoretical problems. We derive a diagrammatic scheme for the new approach and show how a particular choice of the trial hamiltonian corresponds exactly to the use of a Jastrow correlated ansatz for the wave function in the Fermi Hypernetted Chain approach. We show how our new approach can be used to find upper bounds to ground state energies in systems which the FHNC cannot handle, including those described by an energy-dependent effective hamiltonian. We demonstrate our approach by applying it to a quantum field theoretical system of interacting pions and nucleons.

40The Bose-Hubbard Ground State: Extended Bogoliubov And Variational Methods Compared With Time-evolving Block Decimation
By Ippei Danshita and Pascal Naidon
We determine the ground-state properties of a gas of interacting bosonic atoms in a one-dimensional optical lattice. The system is modelled by the Bose-Hubbard Hamiltonian. We show how to apply the time-evolving block decimation method to systems with periodic boundary conditions, and employ it as a reference to find the ground state of the Bose-Hubbard model. Results are compared with recently proposed approximate methods, such as Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov (HFB) theories generalised for strong interactions and the variational Bijl-Dingle-Jastrow method. We find that all HFB methods do not bring any improvement to the Bogoliubov theory and therefore provide correct results only in the weakly-interacting limit, where the system is deeply in the superfluid regime. On the other hand, the variational Bijl-Dingle-Jastrow method is applicable for much stronger interactions, but is essentially limited to the superfluid regime as it reproduces the superfluid-Mott insulator transition only qualitatively.

45Variational Methods For Solving Nonlinear Boundary Problems Of Statics Of Hyper-elastic Membranes
By V. A. Trotsenko
A number of important results of studying large deformations of hyper-elastic shells are obtained using discrete methods of mathematical physics. In the present paper, using the variational method for solving nonlinear boundary problems of statics of hyper-elastic membranes under the regular hydrostatic load, we investigate peculiarities of deformation of a circular membrane whose mechanical characteristics are described by the Bidermann-type elastic potential. We develop an algorithm for solving a singular perturbation of nonlinear problem for the case of membrane loaded by heavy liquid. This algorithm enables us to obtain approximate solutions both in the presence of boundary layer and without it. The class of admissible functions, on which the variational method is realized, is chosen with account of the structure of formal asymptotic expansion of solutions of the corresponding linearized equations that have singularities in a small parameter at higher derivatives and in the independent variable. We give examples of calculations that illustrate possibilities of the method suggested for solving the problem under consideration.

46The Principles And Applications Of Variational Methods

47On Polyharmonic Regularizations Of $k-$Hessian Equations: Variational Methods
By Carlos Escudero
This work is devoted to the study of the boundary value problem \begin{eqnarray}\nonumber (-1)^\alpha \Delta^\alpha u = (-1)^k S_k[u] + \lambda f, \qquad x &\in& \Omega \subset \mathbb{R}^N, \\ \nonumber u = \partial_n u = \partial_n^2 u = \cdots = \partial_n^{\alpha-1} u = 0, \qquad x &\in& \partial \Omega, \end{eqnarray} where the $k-$Hessian $S_k[u]$ is the $k^{\mathrm{th}}$ elementary symmetric polynomial of eigenvalues of the Hessian matrix and the datum $f$ obeys suitable summability properties. We prove the existence of at least two solutions, of which at least one is isolated, strictly by means of variational methods. We look for the optimal values of $\alpha \in \mathbb{N}$ that allow the construction of such an existence and multiplicity theory and also investigate how a weaker definition of the nonlinearity permits improving these results.

49VARIATIONAL METHODS IN THE THEORY OF PLASTICITY
By KACHANOV, L. M
A DISCUSSION IS PRESENTED OF THE APPLICATION OF VARIATIONAL TECHNIQUES TO THE SOLUTION OF BOUNDARY VALUE PROBLEMS FOR PLASTIC MEDIA, WITH PARTICULAR REFERENCE TO NONLINEAR-ELASTIC, NONLINEAR-PLASTIC, ELASTOPLASTIC, AND RIGID-PLASTIC BODIES. THE PRINCIPLES OF THE ORIGINAL AND MODIFIED RITZ METHODS ARE OUTLINED, SHOWING THAT THE MODIFIED METHOD MAKES IT POSSIBLE TO OVERCOME THE DIFFICULTIES ASSOCIATED WITH THE NONQUADRATICITY OF FUNCTIONALS AND TO OBTAIN SOLUTIONS IN A STRAIGHTFORWARD WAY. THE OPTIMUM-INTERPOLATION METHOD AND THE VARIATIONAL-DIFFERENCE METHOD ARE ALSO EXPLAINED.
