2Using Drupal For Less

Drupal is great. Drupal is fun and profit for many of us. But Drupal is not always the answer for every question. Phase2 developers Brandon Morrison and Joshua Turton are going to make the case that sometimes, success happens when you use other tools to get the job done. Presenting both case studies and theory, they will show how it is possible to use Drupal for less, and get more. This session will cover: •Why an all in one approach to a project can make it too complex to manage effectively. •Evaluating projects to break apart individual features that might be better served by an outside service. •Using Drupal to manage your content, and leaving the display and delivery to another set of tool. •Using external libraries such as Geocoder-PHP to manage capabilities already developed by other communities. Senior Developer Joshua Turton brings a wide variety of skills to his role at Phase2. A programmer comfortable working on both front-end and server-side technologies, he also brings a strong visual sensibility to his work. More than ten years of experience both in agencies and as an in-house developer give him a great flexibility. Joshua has worked on a wide variety of projects, with an emphasis in the last few years on Drupal work. He spoke about the Omega base theme at BADCamp 2012. Brandon Morrison is a developer who has worked with Drupal since 2005, when his college newspaper decided that they needed a local answer to Facebook. While one side clearly won that battle, Brandon has been hooked on Drupal ever since. Brandon’s aptitude at solving problems from many different perspectives makes him a valuable addition to the Phase2 community. Brandon’s specialties include front-end development, user-experience work, and mapping projects.

6Move Into Drupal Using The Migrate Module

By

The migrate module provides a flexible framework for migrating content into Drupal from other sources (e.g., when converting a web site from another CMS to Drupal). Out-of-the-box, support for creating core Drupal objects such as nodes, users, files, terms, and comments are included - it can easily be extended for migrating other kinds of content. The power comes from an object oriented API that's tricky to get started with - We'll walk through the various classes in the module and how they work together to manage migrations. I am currently looking for co-presenters or to present in a panel format as I feel we can all have something to learn from each other. UPDATE July 21, 2012: Thank you to everyone that was able to come out to the session. I know it was a complex topic. As another resource, you can take a look at the code from the example I displayed today at https://bitbucket.org/btmash/redcat_new_migration. Obviously, the migration won't work (the db needs to exist) but the code should hopefully be helpful. Cheers! Experience Level: Advanced

Well no need to explain why mobile apps are important! At present you can't really ignore the iOS and Android platforms. Both these technologies have great potential to use our existing web based tools such as Drupal. You can totally use Drupal to manage your iPhone/Android native apps data in cloud. A sequel to DrupalCon Chicago's and DrupalCon CPH's "Developing Apps for iPhone/iPad/Android using Drupal as Base System" session (more advanced!! more fun!!) What will be covered An introduction to Titanium Framework to develop iPhone/Android apps using Titanium API, web technologies like javascript etc Introduction to ServicesAPI and web standards [json, xmlrpc] How to manage your application's data (content, tables, views, users, menus, taxonomy etc) using Drupal. We will build a live app ... introduce you to some code here (ServicesAPI, YQL, jQuery and Titanium API) Photo gallery apps, Video uploading, Geo apps, user data apps, creating nodes on the go! Demo of some apps we built for Android and iPhone platforms Questions! This session is about building native iPhone/iPad/Android applications using open source web based technologies (http://www.appcelerator.com) with Drupal as base system to manage content, users, views, permissions etc. Some iPhone/Drupal stuff I wrote in past: http://civicactions.com/blog/sumit

10DrupalCon Prague 2013: Using Backbone.js With Drupal 8 & 7

By

Backbone.js is a lightweight JavaScript framework which is freely based on MVC pattern and allows developers to create single page AJAX-like web applications. It is also SEO friendly . With Backbone it is possible to update a web page quickly with a minimal amount of data transferred between a client and a server using a REST approach. Backbone becomes more popular day by day and is being used in a growing number of web applications and IT startups such as Groupon Now!, Foursquare, LinkedIn Mobile, Airbnb . I have real working experience with Backbone.js and am currently writing a Backbone.js CookBook for Packt Publishing. In this session I will introduce you to the Backbone.js library and answer the following questions: What is the current state of JavaScript in Drupal 7 ? Why do people use Backbone.js? Why was Backbone.js committed into Drupal 8? We will also: Find similarities between Backbone and Drupal (entities, views, hook_menu and even Form API). Get familiar with Backbone.js and Underscore.js . Understand data fetching techniques like bootstrapping or REST. Learn how to work with the Backbone module for Drupal. For dessert we will: Understand what the WSCCI (“Whiskey”) initiative means for Backbone.js integration. Speak about better integration of Backbone.js with Drupal 8 core. SLIDES: http://slid.es/dealancer/backbone-drupal .

11Using Drupal And The Semantic Web

Web applications are increasingly moving from a "data silo" model towards a more open and connected approach, leveraging the existing schemas and Linked Data available on the Web to generate semantically enriched content. In this session you will discover what is possible to achieve with Drupal 7 and the modules which have been developed to extend its core features. You will learn about some of the technologies that power the semantic web such as schema.org, RDF, SPARQL and JSON-LD, and how they allow your Drupal sites to interoperate with other applications on the Web.

15A €œcontent First” Approach To Designing Responsive Drupal Layouts Using Twitter Bootstrap

By

Understand the key components of responsive web design and how to employ a âcontent firstâ approach while designing your next Drupal site using the new Twitter Bootstrap-based Open Framework theme. Responsive design is the future of the web. More and more people are using mobile devices of all shapes and sizes to access the web and, more than ever, websites need to respond to this changing landscape of devices. Yet responsive web design is relatively new and there are many different ways people are approaching this in the Drupal community.

In recent years, front end development tools have come a long way. Gone are the days of suffering through remembering multiple browser vendor prefixes. We can now focus on what matters most: Writing the code that makes our designs unique. Matt Farina and Nathan Smith will be presenting on how to use Compass/Sass in your Drupal workflow, significantly speeding up the processes of working with CSS. They will guide you past the mental hurdle of "not invented here" and explain how Ruby and PHP can be the best of friends. Or rather, how using Sass does not require much Ruby knowledge at all. Outline: â What is Sass? Compass? (and SCSS too) â Installing Sass & Compass â Compass config in a theme â Sass basics â Compass CSS3 Hotness â More Miscellaneous Hotness You can download the PDF slides here:

21Drupal 7 - Bulk Update Node Creation Date Using Rules And Views Bulk Operations

By

A Drupal 7 recipe demonstrating how to create a Rules component for use in Views Bulk Operations, enabling users to bulk update node created dates. Transcript: I have a view of randomly generated articles I'd like to be able to change the post date on multiple articles without having to edit them individually. To do this, I will rely on two additional modules: Rules, including the Rules UI and Views Bulk Operations. In order for Views Bulk Operations to integrate with Rules we have to create, what are called, Components. Components are simply re-usable rules. I'll add a new component, in this case I'll just add an Action Set. The action set will be called "change post date". It's affecting Articles, so I'll go ahead and add a tag of "articles". The component can take variables. In this case, I'm going to pass in a node, labeled "article", and I'm going to ask the user for a date. We'll need one action performed inside of this [rule] and that will be to "set a data value" on the article created date. For the "data value", I will switch to "data selection mode" and allow the end user to specify a post date. That's it, the changes have been saved. I'll navigate to my view for articles. I'll add a new field. Right up top is the "Bulk operations" for content. I'll label this "operations". Down here you can select "change post date". And I'll save the view. I'll navigate to the articles view. And now there's an operations select box, including my "change post date". In the checkbox column on the right side, I'll select several articles. [Use] my "change post date" operation. I'll simply change the year. Lets post these in 2012. It's going to confirm, perform the process on the selected items. Now, scrolling to the bottom I see I have three articles published in 2012.

29Using Drupal And The Semantic Web

Web applications are increasingly moving from a "data silo" model towards a more open and connected approach, leveraging the existing schemas and Linked Data available on the Web to generate semantically enriched content. In this session you will discover what is possible to achieve with Drupal 7 and the modules which have been developed to extend its core features. You will learn about some of the technologies that power the semantic web such as schema.org, RDF, SPARQL and JSON-LD, and how they allow your Drupal sites to interoperate with other applications on the Web.

30DrupalCon DC 2009 - Deploying And Maintaining Drupal Sites Using The Aegir Hosting System

By

Installing and maintaining a Drupal website is a straight forward process, even if most of the work required has to be done manually. This is sufficient if you only maintain a single or small number of sites, but it starts breaking down when you maintain ten, a hundred, or even a thousand sites. Aegir is a new set of contributed modules for Drupal that aims to solve this common problem. Presented by: Adrian Rossouw Recorded by: Marc Tan

32Data Visualization Using D 3.js Integrated With Drupal

Visualization conversations in Drupal are usually centered around UI options, php api functions, and graphing engines. Other than "which graphing library should I use?", there is very little conversation about the actual Javascript itself, yet most visualizations are done using Javascript. We'd like to switch the conversation from PHP, over to JS and treat a 'visualization' as a new library. When the word 'visualization' is mentioned in the Drupal world, we'd like the community to think of this: http://trends.truliablog.com/vis/tru247/ Not this: http://www.internet4classrooms.com/images/07_basic_chart2.gif   The d3.js Drupal module allows you to create a new visualization, (or use the demo visualizations), with a few guidelines in the javascript to make it compatible with the d3 module. This gives the developer complete flexibility in their visualization, and also gives them the ability to clone out visualizations if they'd like to change only certain characteristics.  Attached are a few screenshots of the d3 examples within the module.
