This guide was developed as a "how to" training device for obtaining help with AppleWorks version 2.0 word processing files using the Apple IIGS computer with two disk drives. Step-by-step instructions are provided for program loading; selecting the help list; and using the help list to copy text, delete text, find parts of a document, identify page break locations, move part or all of a document, change file names, replace words, set tabs, use bold face, use underline, move to the beginning of a file, and move to the end of a file. Diagrams of the monitor screen are provided for each step in the process of bringing word processor and spreadsheet files from a data disks to the computer desktop. (GL)

The programed instruction lesson presented in this paper is designed to introduce the Data Base subprogram of the Appleworks software program. The main sections of the lesson are: (1) getting started with the database; (2) arranging, moving, and updating files; and (3) creating a new database. This document suggests that the activity described can be used from kindergarten through adulthood. The activity involves measuring, counting, categorizing, group processes, construction of computer data base files, construction and/or use of data tables, data gathering, making observations, the study of shape, the computation of area, the computation of volume, the manipulating and printing of computer files and the evaluation of data trends. For older students and adults, writing skills and/or scientific writing may be added to the list. One goal of the activity is to illustrate how easily computers can be integrated into a science program. The activity uses rulers, a random collection of buttons, and the AppleWorks database. After gathering as much data as possible in some organized fashion, students work individually on the computer. Once the data gathering phase has been completed, a computer data base file is built, data entered in the file and the data base manipulated as data trends are sought. This manual was developed for use as a "how to" training device and provides a step-by-step introduction to using AppleWorks in the database mode. Instructions are given to prepare the original database with the headings of the user's choice. Inserting information records in the new database is covered, along with changing the layout of the database after several records have already been entered. Each step of the entire operation is accompanied by views of the screen. The guide can be used with either Apple IIe or IIGS computers with dual disk drives and an 80-column card.
