A small number of young stellar objects show signs of a halo-like structure of optically thin dust. This halo or torus is located within a few AU of the star, but its origin has not yet been understood. A dynamically excited cloud of planetesimals colliding to eventually form dust could produce such a structure. The cause of the dynamical excitation could be one or more planets. This work investigates an inwardly migrating planet that is dynamically scattering planetesimals as a possible cause for the observed structures. If this mechanism is responsible, the observed halo-like structure could be used to infer the existence of planets in these systems. We present analytical estimates on the maximum inclination reached owing to dynamical interactions between planetesimals and a migrating planet. A symplectic integrator is used to simulate the effect of a migrating planet on a population of planetesimals. It is found that an inwardly migrating planet is only able to scatter the material it encounters to highly-inclined orbits if the material is on an eccentric orbit. Such eccentric orbits can be the result of resonance trapping and eccentricity pumping. Simulations show that for a certain range of migration rates and planet masses, resonance capture combined with planetary migration indeed causes the planetesimals to reach eccentric orbits and subsequently get scattered to highly-inclined orbits. The size distribution of the resulting dust is calculated determined to find the total mass and optical depth, which are found to compare reasonably well with the observed structures. Dynamical scattering of planetesimals caused by a planet migrating in, followed by the grinding down of these planetesimals to dust grains, appears to be a promising explanation for the inferred circumstellar dust clouds. Further study is needed to see if the haloes can be used to infer the presence of planets.

We study some examples of collective behavior in neutrino clouds governed by the neutral-current neutrino-neutrino interaction. The standard equations for analyzing such systems are rederived in a two-step process: first, a replacement of the full interaction Hamiltonian with a "forward" Hamiltonian that contains only the momentum states that were initially occupied by a neutrino of one flavor or another; second, a factorization assumption that reduces the time evolution problem to the solution of coupled equations for the expectations of various bilinear forms in the neutrino fields. We designate the latter as the "classical" equations. We analyze some solutions of these equations in cases in which the initial momentum and flavor distributions of neutrinos are strongly anisotropic in space. In some cases we find an instability that leads to rapid evolution of the flavor-angle distribution, even when it is seeded by a very small initial flavor mixing (or alternatively by a very small neutrino mass$^2$ term). Turning to the more complete case in which we do not assume the classical factorization, but instead solve for the evolution under the influence of the full "forward" Hamiltonian, we find the possibility of rapid evolution, under our definition, even when there is no seeding from conventional neutrino mixing.

We investigate the formation of carbon stars as a function of the stellar mass and parent metallicity. Theoretical modelling is based on an improved scheme for treating the third dredge-up in synthetic calculations of thermally pulsing asymptotic giant branch (TP-AGB) stars. In this approach, the usual criterion (based on a constant minimum core mass for the occurrence of dredge-up, M_c^min) is replaced by one on the minimum temperature at the base of the convective envelope, T_b^dred, at the stage of the post-flash luminosity maximum. Envelope integrations then allow determination of M_c^min as a function of stellar mass, metallicity, and pulse strength (see Wood 1981), thus inferring if and when dredge-up first occurs. Moreover, the final possible shut down of the process is predicted. Extensive grids of TP-AGB models were computed using this scheme. We present and discuss the calibration of the two dredge-up parameters (lambda and T_b^dred) aimed at reproducing the carbon star luminosity function (CSLF) in the LMC. It turns out that the faint tail is almost insensitive to the history of star formation rate (SFR) in the parent galaxy (it is essentially determined by T_b^dred), in contrast to the bright wing which may be more affected by the details of the recent SFR. Once the faint end is reproduced, the peak location is a stringent calibrator of lambda. The best fit to the observed CSLF in the LMC is obtained with Z=0.008, lambda=0.50, log(T_b^dred)=6.4, and a constant SFR up to 5x10^8 yr ago. A good fit to the CSLF in the SMC is then easily derived from the Z=0.004 models, with a single choice of parameters, and a constant SFR over the entire significant age interval. The results are consistent with the theoretical expectation that the third dredge-up is more efficient at lower Zs.

We use the available data for Magellanic Cloud carbon stars to constrain the efficiency of the third dredge-up process in TP-AGB models. We show that star counts in LMC clusters provide quite stringent limits to the lifetime of the C-star phase, with a duration between 2 and 3 Myr for stars in the mass range from 1.5 to 2.8 Msun. Together with the luminosity functions of field C stars, this information allows us to re-calibrate the third dredge-up parameters log T_b_dred and lambda in TP-AGB models that include variable molecular opacities (Marigo 2002). Preliminary results are presented here.

We show that star counts in LMC clusters provide quite stringent limits to the lifetime of the C-star phase, with a duration between 2 and 3 Myr for stars in the mass range from 1.5 to 2.8 Msun. Together with the luminosity functions of field C stars, this information allows us to re-calibrate the third dredge-up parameters log T_b_dred and lambda in TP-AGB models that include variable molecular opacities (Marigo 2002). Preliminary results are presented here.

At the age of 16 he went to Canada and was six years in the service of the Hudson's Bay Company. He returned to Scotland in 1847, and published his first book the following year, Hudson's Bay: or, Life in the Wilds of North America. For some time he was employed by Messrs Constable, the publishers, but in 1856 he gave up business for the profession of literature, and began the series of adventure stories for the young with which his name is popularly associated.

Although the book's title Black Ivory denotes dealing in the slave trade it is not our heroes who are doing it. At the very first chapter there is a shipwreck, which leaves the son of the charterer of the sinking ship, and a seaman friend of his, alone on the east coast of Africa, where Arab and Portuguese slave traders were still carrying out their evil trade, despite the great efforts of patrolling British warships to limit it and free the unfortunates whom they found being carried away in the Arab dhows.<br /><br />Our heroes encountered a slave trader almost at the very spot where they come ashore, and thereby managed to get to Zanzibar in a British warship that had captured the trader's dhow in which our friends had hitched a lift.<br /><br />At Zanzibar they pick up some funds, and set forth on a journey into the interior. Here again they encounter the vile trade, but most of the story deals with other encounters of a more acceptable nature.<br /><br />This book will open your eyes to what really went on. At the time of writing slave-dealing on the west coast of Africa was, due to the efforts of the British, almost extinct, but this was not the case on the east coast. Before leaving England, the steady and God-fearing Fred had promised Tom's mother that he would do his best to take care of his friend, but in spite of all his efforts, Tom had fallen in with bad companions and taken to gambling. He was convinced that he could make his fortune quicker by attempting to increase it at the dice or card table, and all his friend's attempts to make him see his errors were unavailing. Finally, after being cheated out of all he owned, he stole the money back from the camp bully, Gashford, who had taken it from him, and had to flee for his life from the camp, before “Judge Lynch” could catch up to him. After being captured by the irate miners, and released by another friend, he managed to almost escape, but was caught again, this time near the cabin inhabited by an older prospector and his daughter, whom Tom loved with his whole heart. There was a difficulty though in his way- Betty, (otherwise known as the “Rose of Oregon”) was a devout Christian, and would never give her heart to one who wasn't. She did give him some excellent advice though, at a time when he most needed it.<br></br> After being captured the second time, and confined in the mining camp, Tom gives up all hope of escape, and even when his friends buy him off he refuses to escape. Circumstances force him to flee a second time though, and this time his two friends go with him. After various other adventures, and several very close calls with death, matters are eventually worked out, and Tom, Fred, Paddy Flinders (a hilarious Irishman) and Betty live “happily ever after”, and are also a powerful witness to the rough gold-mining population of Oregon, before going back to England. - Summary by Alayna May
